For the clearest documented route to send a continuous stream to YouTube, MediaMTX is the simpler starting point: its forwarding guide shows a native RTMPS destination pattern using a YouTube stream URL and key. SRS can accept and forward RTMP streams, but the inspected SRS examples do not provide an equally direct YouTube RTMPS recipe. That is a documentation difference, not proof that MediaMTX performs better. Test the exact version and stream you plan to run.
Which should you choose for a continuous YouTube stream?
Choose MediaMTX if you want to relay an incoming stream to YouTube and prefer a documented, path-level YouTube forwarding example. Choose SRS if it already fits your RTMP publishing or forwarding setup and you can verify its version-specific destination behavior, including RTMPS, against YouTube.

Configure MediaMTX to forward to YouTube
MediaMTX’s guide describes configuring a forward destination on the path that receives your input stream. The example below shows the shape of the setting; replace the path, ingest URL, and key with values from your own YouTube Live Control Room.

Do not assume the sample endpoint in a server guide is still YouTube’s current endpoint; MediaMTX notes its shown URL reflected what YouTube reported when that page was last updated.
- Set the receiving path. In the MediaMTX configuration, use the path your encoder or upstream source will publish to, then add its path-level
forwardentry as shown above. - Use RTMPS when configuring the YouTube destination. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. Follow the current URL provided for your stream rather than constructing an endpoint from a stale sample. YouTube encoder settings and bitrates
- Protect the key. Treat the stream key as a credential: keep it out of public repositories, screenshots, and public logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
- Send both audio and video, then verify delivery. MediaMTX warns that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams. Confirm that the incoming source contains both tracks and check YouTube’s stream health before treating the relay as ready.
If the forwarding job needs transcoding or filtering, MediaMTX’s guide points to FFmpeg for cases its native forwarding feature does not cover. That adds another process and configuration surface; use it only when the stream needs such processing.
What to verify before using SRS
SRS documents RTMP publishing and forwarding, but its cited examples focus on RTMP server destinations and clusters rather than a direct YouTube RTMPS setup. The forwarding reference is for v5, while the cited RTMP documentation is for v7 and marked unstable. Do not copy a host-and-port example and assume it proves that YouTube’s RTMPS path, stream key, TLS, and certificate behavior are all configured correctly.

- Choose the SRS release you intend to operate and read the forwarding instructions for that release.
- Confirm that the release and configuration support the exact RTMPS destination form required by the current YouTube ingest URL and key.
- Publish a test stream with the intended input source, then verify YouTube receives audio and video and reports healthy stream status.
- Observe reconnect behavior and stream health during a representative test before relying on it for a continuous broadcast. The cited documentation does not establish automatic recovery performance.
The SRS documentation describes dynamic forwarding as a mode where SRS asks an HTTP backend for destination RTMP URLs. That may suit systems that need destinations to be supplied dynamically, but it is not, by itself, a verified YouTube RTMPS recipe.

Set the encoder for YouTube, not just the relay
MediaMTX and SRS relay streams; the encoder settings still need to meet YouTube’s ingestion guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS and lists RTMP/RTMPS as supported protocols, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. The figures below are YouTube Help’s recommended video encoder bitrate settings, not measured relay throughput or a guarantee of total internet bandwidth. The figures were listed on the YouTube Help page accessed in 2026.

Use a representative test with the real audio and typical motion in your video, check upload speed, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test. A relay cannot compensate for an encoder feed or network that fails to deliver a valid stream.
