Music Center for PC replaced Media Go for Sony audio management, especially music playback and transfers to supported Walkman devices—but it did not replace Media Go’s full set of media tools. Sony removed Media Go downloads after December 2017 and ended support and updates in January 2018. The right alternative now depends on whether you used Media Go for music, photos and videos, or managing media on a legacy device.
What replaced Media Go?
Sony named Music Center for PC as the successor for music management, playback and transfers to supported audio devices. Sony described the change as a move to an app with enhanced support for Walkman devices and Hi-Res Audio-compatible products. It also named Windows Media Player as an alternative for users managing media on Xperia phones and tablets, PSP systems, Sony tablets and phones from other manufacturers. That broad recommendation is not a promise that Windows Media Player duplicates Media Go’s features or works with every model.

Sony’s discontinuation notice said Media Go downloads would no longer be available after December 2017. Support and updates ended in January 2018. Those are historical end-of-support milestones; they do not establish whether any particular archived copy will work with a current computer or device.

What Music Center for PC can—and cannot—replace
Music playback and transfers
Sony describes Music Center for PC as software for playing and managing songs and transferring them from a computer to audio devices such as Walkman players. Its comparison with Media Go includes high-resolution audio formats such as FLAC and DSD. This makes it the most direct Sony option if your old workflow centered on an eligible audio device, but compatibility should be checked for the specific model and operating system before installation.

Photos, videos and other Media Go features
Music Center for PC is focused on audio. Sony explicitly says it omits Media Go’s video and photo functions. Sony’s comparison also identifies differences involving movie and podcast functions and metadata behavior. If those features mattered to your library, do not assume that installing Music Center for PC will preserve them or reproduce the old workflow.
How to decide what to install
- List the job you need done. Separate music playback and transfers from photo or video handling, podcast use, and media management on a phone, tablet or PSP.
- For music and supported Walkman transfers, start with Sony’s Music Center for PC information and confirm that your exact device and computer meet the current requirements.
- For photo and video tasks, choose a separate application or device workflow; Music Center for PC does not provide those Media Go functions.
- For a legacy device, treat Windows Media Player as a possible alternative, not a guaranteed one. Check the device’s current support information and test the specific transfer or library task you need.
- Before migrating a library, confirm how playlists, metadata and podcasts are handled. Sony’s comparison notes differences, so do not assume that library details will carry over unchanged.
Why the answer is not simply “Music Center replaced Media Go”
Sony positioned Music Center for PC as Media Go’s successor for similar audio functions, not as a one-for-one replacement for every feature. The distinction matters: an audio-focused user with a supported Walkman may find it is the relevant successor, while someone who relied on Media Go for photos, videos or device-specific management needs additional software or a different workflow. Sony’s historical notices establish the discontinuation and its named alternatives, but do not establish comprehensive present-day compatibility for every old device.
