A 2021 laboratory demonstration used charged molecular rings, polymer collecting chains and a metal-organic framework (MOF). The researchers characterized the mechanism as a fundamentally new form of adsorption, distinct from the passive equilibrium processes of physisorption and chemisorption.
What mechanisorption means
Adsorption is the accumulation of molecules (the adsorbate, or sorbate) at a surface (the adsorbent). In mechanisorption, uptake is not simply a passive consequence of molecules binding to a surface. Artificial molecular pumps use energy to transport sorbate from solution into a surface-bound compartment, where it is retained in a non-equilibrium state.

The 2021 study describes the resulting connection as a mechanical bond between adsorbent and adsorbate. The rings are held through the arrangement created by the molecular machinery, rather than by permanently changing the components. The researchers report that a chemical treatment can break the relevant noncovalent interactions and release the rings without destructively cleaving the molecular components. The Stoddart group’s paper description calls the phenomenon non-equilibrium pumping that forms mechanical bonds between adsorbent and adsorbate.
How the demonstrated molecular pumps work
The experiment assembled pumping cassettes and collecting polymer chains on the surface of a MOF. The cassettes recruit charged rings from the surrounding solution and move them sequentially along the collecting chains. Redox cycles drive and regulate this pumping; acid treatment triggers the rings’ release back into the bulk solution. Chemistry World’s account of the study describes this laboratory system and its release step.

The observed result was molecular transport and retention on a carefully constructed MOF surface—not a demonstration of a general-purpose adsorbent. The mechanism depends on the specific pumps, rings, chains, surface and chemical conditions used.
How mechanisorption differs from physisorption and chemisorption
Physisorption and chemisorption are established adsorption modes in which uptake is treated as passive: the amount and type of adsorbate are set by equilibrium conditions. Mechanisorption instead uses an energy source to move molecules actively, enabling a high surface concentration to persist against the bulk concentration gradient.

| Comparison | Physisorption and chemisorption | Mechanisorption in the reported system |
|---|---|---|
| Uptake | Passive adsorption governed by equilibrium conditions, as characterized in the study coverage. | Active transport driven by molecular pumps and redox cycles. |
| Energy flow | Described by the researchers and study coverage as energetically favorable binding that requires energy for release. | Energy is used to bind and pump the sorbate; some energy is released upon desorption, according to outside researcher Charlie McTernan in Chemistry World. |
| State of the adsorbate | Equilibrium adsorption. | A maintained non-equilibrium surface concentration. |
| Release | Requires energy to release the sorbate, in the comparison presented by the sources. | Acid treatment releases the rings in the specific demonstration, without destructive cleavage of the molecular components. |
These are conceptual distinctions, not a standardized performance comparison. The cited accounts do not provide common quantitative measurements that would rank mechanisorption against other adsorbents or industrial adsorption processes.

The “more than 90 years” framing refers to the researchers’ characterization of physisorption and chemisorption as the established forms since the 1930s. It describes the conceptual significance claimed for mechanisorption, rather than establishing that every earlier adsorption study has been exhaustively reviewed. The paper, “Active mechanisorption driven by pumping cassettes,” by Liang Feng and colleagues, appeared in Science 374 (6572), pages 1215–1221, in 2021 (DOI: 10.1126/science.abk1391). Northwestern’s Stoddart Mechanostereochemistry Group describes the work as non-equilibrium pumping to form mechanical bonds.

What the result could mean for storage—and what it has not shown
Active pumping suggests a way to accumulate molecules at a surface even when that concentration is not favored by equilibrium with the surrounding solution. The sources discuss chemical storage and the possibility of storing energy in chemical-potential gradients. They also raise future adaptations involving functionalized rings, other surfaces and gas storage.
Those are prospective applications. The reported demonstration does not establish commercial gas capture, industrial-scale storage, or a product ready for deployment. Nor do the cited accounts provide a standardized quantitative comparison of capacity, energy efficiency or performance against existing materials. Chemistry World reports that a setup using polyethylene glycol as the collecting chain could theoretically undergo up to 10 redox cycles; this is a theoretical limit for that reported setup, not an observed general benchmark for mechanisorption.

How to assess a mechanisorption claim
For any proposed application, the useful questions are whether uptake is actively driven or passive, where energy enters and leaves the cycle, whether the adsorbate is held in a non-equilibrium state, and how it is released. The 2021 work establishes those features in a particular molecular system. It does not, by itself, show that the approach is scalable or advantageous for a specific storage task.
