A socket set is the focused choice if you mainly need sockets and a ratchet. A mechanics tool set generally adds other hand tools, such as wrenches, bits or hex keys, but the exact contents depend on the model. Choose by checking the inventory against the fasteners you work on and the tools you already own—not by comparing piece counts alone.
What is the difference?
A socket set is centered on sockets and the drive tools used with them, typically a ratchet and sometimes extensions or adapters. A mechanics tool set is usually a broader assortment that can include those socket tools alongside items such as combination wrenches, bits and hex keys. These are product labels rather than fixed standards, so neither name guarantees a particular inventory.

For example, STANLEY describes its STMT71654 as a 201-piece mechanics set containing ratchets, extension bars, SAE and metric sockets and nut bits, hex keys, combination wrenches and a case. DEWALT’s DWMT81534 is a 205-piece set that includes ratchets, sockets, a bit driver, specialty and nut bits, combination wrenches and hex keys. The examples show why it is worth reading the contents list instead of assuming every set with the same label is alike. STANLEY STMT71654 product listing; DEWALT DWMT81534 product listing.
Which one should you choose?
Choose a socket set for socket coverage
A socket set is the more direct fit when your jobs mainly involve turning nuts and bolts with sockets and a ratchet. Focus on whether it covers the sizes and types of fasteners you encounter, and whether it includes the drive tools and access pieces you need. If you already own wrenches, bits or hex keys, paying for another assortment of them may add little value.

Choose a mechanics set to fill broader tool gaps
A mechanics set can make sense if you need sockets plus hand tools you would otherwise buy separately. Its added value depends on what is actually in the box: a set with wrenches and hex keys may suit a wider range of jobs than one focused on sockets, while a set whose extras duplicate your current tools may not.
What to check before buying
- Socket system and range: Check whether sockets are SAE, metric or both, then compare the listed sizes with the fasteners you expect to work on.
- Socket depth: Look for both standard and deep sockets if your work requires reaching recessed nuts or longer threaded studs. STANLEY’s STMT71654 listing, for example, specifies SAE and metric sockets in standard and deep formats. STANLEY STMT71654 inventory.
- Ratchet drive sizes: More than one drive size can broaden the range of sockets and tasks a set supports. DEWALT lists 1/4-, 3/8- and 1/2-inch drive ratchets in its DWMT81534 set. DEWALT DWMT81534 inventory.
- Access pieces: Check whether the kit includes extensions, adapters or universal joints if fasteners are difficult to reach. DEWALT’s DWMT73803 is one example of a 168-piece mechanics set whose listed contents include ratchets, sockets, extensions, universal joints and adapters. DEWALT DWMT73803 product listing.
- Useful extras: For a broader mechanics kit, identify which wrenches, bits, hex keys or other hand tools are included—and whether you need them.
- Inventory, not piece count: A manufacturer’s piece count is a product specification, not a measure of how useful the set will be for your work. Compare the actual sizes, drive tools and extras against your needs.
A quick way to decide
- List the fasteners and tasks you expect to handle.
- Mark which sizes, SAE or metric system, and socket depths those jobs require.
- Compare each candidate’s inventory, including ratchet drive sizes and access pieces.
- Count only the extra hand tools that would fill a real gap in your current kit.
- Choose the set that covers those needs with the least unnecessary overlap.
The STANLEY and DEWALT sets above are manufacturer-described examples, not independent evaluations or hands-on tests. Contents and availability can change; verify the current product listing before buying.
