The explanation comes from developers Tim Jones and Kris Zierhut in a 2026 interview; it does not amount to a comprehensive explanation of why Blizzard did not add High or Blood Elves instead.
Why did Blizzard choose the Skyborne?
Lead Classic Designer Tim Jones gave two reasons in an interview with Windows Central published September 13, 2026: players enjoy playing elves, and Blizzard had a story it wanted to tell through the race. Jones said, “We know that being an elf is extremely popular,” and later summed up the decision: “We knew players were going to enjoy it. We have a really cool story to tell about it … so why not?”

Jones also recalled that when Blood Elves joined the Horde, the faction balance had shifted from 60% Alliance and 40% Horde to “actually flipped to 60% Horde.” That is his account in the interview, not an independently documented player-population measurement: the report gives no dataset, measurement period, or methodology. It helps explain the kind of player appeal Blizzard considered, but should not be treated as a verified current balance figure.
What story does Skyborne let Blizzard tell?
Principal Designer Kris Zierhut connected the race to Shen’dralas and the history of Eldre’thalas, the city later known as Dire Maul. He described the setting as an opportunity to explore more of that history and posed a specific unresolved question: “Who opposed Prince Tortheldrin when he decided to sap his own people for power to summon demons?”

Blizzard’s official Skyborne guide describes two distinct lineages rather than treating all elf identities as interchangeable. The Windshapers descend from shen’dorei high elves who received elemental skysight from wind spirits. The High Order descends from Highborne scholars of Eldre’thalas. The factions therefore offer different story identities within the new race, even though both are Skyborne.
How are Skyborne different from the expected High or Blood Elf options?
The interview explains why Blizzard found the Skyborne appealing; it does not provide a direct, complete case against adding High Elves or Blood Elves. The useful distinction is what the announced race is designed to do: it combines elf ancestry with a particular elemental story and a connection to Shen’dralas and Eldre’thalas. In the official lore, “shen’dorei high elves” and “Highborne” identify specific ancestors and histories; neither term makes the Windshapers or High Order simply another name for Blood Elves.

Which factions and classes can Skyborne choose?
| Skyborne path | Faction | Path-specific class | Other available classes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windshaper | Horde | Shaman | Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, or Druid |

Blizzard’s race guide lists the faction and class combinations. Its panel recap also says the race includes new Skyborne druid forms.

Is “We may occasionally make a bold choice” a verified Blizzard quote?
That exact wording is not confirmed by the cited interview or Blizzard pages. The interview does contain Jones’s attributable remark about a popular race and a story Blizzard wanted to tell, but the available sources do not establish who said the “bold choice” phrase, when it was said, or what it referred to. It should not be presented as a verified quotation from a Blizzard speaker.

Coverage and player discussion have framed the choice as controversial, including criticism that the game is adding “yet another” elf race. The available sources do not provide a representative poll or measured breakdown of reception, so those reactions cannot establish what most players think.

Blizzard says World of Warcraft: Forever is set to launch globally on November 4, 2026, at 3 p.m. Pacific Time, according to its panel recap. That is an announced future launch date, not evidence that the game is already available. The Skyborne announcement is for Forever; it is not an announcement that Skyborne are playable in the main modern World of Warcraft game.
