Membrane keyboards are usually the quieter starting point for gaming and typing, particularly in shared rooms, offices, and calls. Logitech describes membrane models as typically quieter because their rubber-dome mechanism produces a softer keypress. That is a category-level rule, not a guarantee for every product: a mechanical keyboard with a quiet or silent linear switch can be less disruptive than a poorly damped membrane board, while clicky mechanical switches are usually a bad fit when minimizing audible feedback is the priority.
The reliable way to choose is to check the exact mechanism, switch variant, keyboard construction, and environment in which you will use it. No source in the available evidence reports standardized, head-to-head decibel measurements, so a precise claim such as “X dB quieter” would be unsupported.

The quick verdict
If your first requirement is the lowest likely sound, begin with a membrane keyboard. Logitech’s comparison says membrane keyboards are typically quieter and better suited to quiet environments because the rubber dome softens the keypress. HP likewise points to membrane or quiet mechanical options for shared spaces and remote calls.
Choose a mechanical keyboard when you want a particular switch feel or the ability to select a quieter switch deliberately. Within mechanical keyboards, avoid clicky switches when sound is a concern. Look instead for a switch explicitly described as quiet or silent, especially a linear design. The exact board still matters: mounting, keycaps, case materials, and the way a key bottoms out can change what people nearby hear, so a switch name alone cannot guarantee a quiet result.

What creates the sound?
Membrane: one rubber-dome interface
A membrane keyboard uses rubber domes under the keys. Pressing a key collapses a dome and closes the contact layer. Logitech describes this design as typically quieter than mechanical keyboards, and the softer dome action is the main reason it is a sensible default for a low-noise setup.
“Quieter” does not mean silent. You can still hear keycaps moving, a key reaching the bottom of its travel, or a finger lifting off the key. A membrane board with a rigid case or hard keycaps may sound sharper than expected. Treat the category description as a starting point, then assess the specific model if other people will be listening.
Mechanical: an individual switch under every key
Mechanical keyboards use a separate switch for each key. That arrangement lets manufacturers offer noticeably different sound and feel profiles. Logitech lists Tactile Quiet, Clicky, and Linear variants for its MX Mechanical family, showing why the word “mechanical” by itself is not a noise specification.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchA mechanical board can produce sound from the switch itself and from the key reaching the end of its travel. Clicky designs intentionally add an audible click. Tactile designs provide a bump; whether that bump is quiet depends on the switch implementation. Linear designs omit the tactile bump and can be a better fit for low-noise use when they are specifically identified as quiet or silent.
Mechanical switch types and their noise profiles
Clicky switches
Clicky switches create an intentional audible event during the press. Logitech’s comparisons describe mechanical switches as potentially tactile or clicky, while identifying linear switches as an exception to that sound profile. If your keyboard will be used beside a sleeping partner, in an open office, or next to a live microphone, clicky is the least suitable mechanical choice for noise reduction.
Tactile quiet switches
Tactile switches provide a bump that helps you feel when a key activates. A variant labeled “quiet” is designed to reduce the audible impact compared with a conventional tactile or clicky option. Logitech lists Tactile Quiet as one MX Mechanical configuration, but the family name does not tell you which switch is installed. Confirm the exact configuration in the product listing and your region.

Linear switches
Linear switches have a smooth, consistent press. They do not add the deliberate click associated with clicky designs, but not every linear switch is silent. Look for an explicit quiet or silent designation and check the complete keyboard rather than assuming every board using a linear switch will sound the same.

Purpose-built silent switches
CHERRY describes its MX Silent Black as a linear switch with integrated noise-reduction technology and reduced typing sound. That makes it a relevant example of a mechanical switch designed specifically for quieter operation. It is a switch component, not a guarantee that every keyboard fitted with it will have identical acoustics. Compatibility, layout, hot-swap support, and the keyboard’s construction must be checked before considering a replacement.
CHERRY’s MX Silent Black specification is the appropriate place to verify the switch’s design and compatibility information.
Membrane versus mechanical: the practical comparison
| Factor | Membrane keyboard | Mechanical keyboard |
|---|---|---|
| Typical sound | Usually quieter, according to Logitech’s category comparison | Varies substantially by switch; clicky is generally unsuitable when minimizing sound |
| Quietest path | Choose a well-built membrane model and verify reviews or a return option where possible | Select a switch explicitly labeled quiet or silent; linear designs are the usual place to start |
| Sound consistency | Category-level expectation, but case and keycap construction still matter | Depends on the exact switch, keycaps, mounting, case, and typing force |
| Switch choice | Usually no user-selectable switch variant | May be offered in tactile quiet, clicky, linear, or other variants |
| Shared room or microphone use | Often the safer default | Use only a quiet or silent configuration and test the complete board |
| Evidence for a universal decibel winner | Not established by standardized measurements in the cited sources | Not established by standardized measurements in the cited sources |

Why a “quiet” switch label is not enough
Noise comes from the whole keyboard. Two boards using the same switch can sound different because of their case, plate, keycap material, internal spaces, stabilizers, and how firmly the keys strike the bottom of the travel. Desk contact and typing technique also affect what reaches another person or a microphone.

For that reason, evaluate the product configuration, not only the switch family. Logitech’s MX Mechanical listing demonstrates the issue: the product family is offered with Tactile Quiet, Clicky, and Linear options. A listing that simply says “MX Mechanical” does not establish which sound profile you will receive. Check the exact switch name, layout, and regional stock-keeping unit before ordering.

Choosing for gaming
When low noise is the priority
For gaming in a shared room, a membrane keyboard is the least complicated low-noise choice. It avoids the deliberate click of clicky mechanical switches and follows Logitech’s general category guidance. Select a specific model with a clear return policy if the product page does not describe its construction or provide a way to hear it.
When you want mechanical feel without the click
Choose a mechanical board that identifies a quiet or silent switch. A linear configuration is usually a more appropriate starting point than clicky. If a product offers both quiet tactile and clicky variants, select the quiet variant and verify that the listing applies to the layout you are buying.
When a microphone is nearby
Keyboard noise can be distracting to other people and can be captured by a microphone. HP recommends membrane or quiet mechanical options for situations such as shared rooms and remote calls. Before relying on a board during a stream, meeting, or tournament, make a short recording from the actual microphone position while typing at your normal speed. That test does not create a universal decibel rating, but it reveals whether your setup is acceptable to listeners.
Choosing for typing
Quiet office or household typing
Start with membrane if minimizing disturbance matters more than switch customization. Its rubber-dome mechanism is the quieter default described by Logitech. If you prefer mechanical feedback, use a quiet tactile or silent linear switch and test the complete keyboard in the room where it will be used.
Typing with a preference for feedback
A tactile quiet switch can provide a noticeable bump without the intentional click of a clicky switch. The feel is personal, so sound and comfort should be evaluated separately. A board can feel satisfying yet still transmit a sharp bottom-out sound to a nearby desk.
Typing next to a sleeping person
Choose the quietest configuration you can verify, beginning with membrane or a mechanical board explicitly marketed around silent operation. Avoid clicky switches. Keep the keyboard on a surface that does not amplify impacts, and test at night when background noise is low; a sound that seems minor during the day can be more noticeable in a quiet room.

A step-by-step buying method
- Define the listening environment. Identify whether the keyboard will be used in a private room, shared office, bedroom, classroom, or beside a microphone. The stricter the noise requirement, the more valuable a verified quiet configuration becomes.
- Pick the category starting point. Choose membrane when minimum likely sound is the overriding criterion. Choose mechanical only if its feel, customization, or switch choice is important enough to justify comparing quieter variants.
- Remove clicky options. If nearby people or a microphone must not hear an intentional click, exclude clicky configurations first.
- Inspect the exact switch or mechanism. Look for terms such as Tactile Quiet, Linear, Silent, or integrated noise reduction. Treat an unspecified “mechanical” label as insufficient information.
- Verify the exact product configuration. Confirm switch, layout, language, connection type, and regional SKU. A product family may contain multiple switch variants.
- Check whole-keyboard evidence. Look for information about construction and, where available, recordings made with a similar microphone distance. Do not infer the entire board’s sound from the switch name alone.
- Plan a return or in-room test. If the listing provides no useful acoustic information, buy only where the return terms let you test normal gaming and typing without being locked into an unsuitable board.
How to test a keyboard fairly at home
A practical test is more useful than a generic “quiet” label because sound depends on the room and listener. Use the same desk, microphone position, typing text, and game controls for each candidate. Type at your normal force rather than deliberately tapping softly or hammering the keys.
- Record several minutes of ordinary typing and the game inputs you actually use.
- Listen from the other person’s position, not only through headphones at your desk.
- Repeat with the keyboard in its final location; a bare table and a desk mat can transmit sound differently.
- Check the loudest events, including rapid key presses, spacebar use, and modifier keys.
- Ask the person sharing the room whether the sound is distracting. Their perception is the relevant outcome.
This process can tell you which of two boards is less intrusive in your setup. It cannot establish a universal decibel difference, because the available manufacturer pages do not report standardized head-to-head acoustic measurements.

Assuming every mechanical keyboard is loud
Mechanical is a mechanism category, not one sound profile. Logitech lists quiet tactile, clicky, and linear choices in one product family, and silent mechanical switches are available. Compare the switch variant rather than rejecting every mechanical option.
Assuming every linear switch is silent
Linear means a smooth press, not automatically a noise-free press. Select a model that explicitly identifies noise reduction or silent operation and then evaluate the complete board.
Buying from the family name alone
When a family has multiple configurations, the family name does not establish the installed switch. Confirm the exact listing, region, and layout before paying.

Relying on an invented decibel number
The cited evidence contains qualitative descriptions, not comparable measurements. Do not trust a precise “X dB quieter” claim unless the source explains the same test conditions for both keyboards.

Ignoring the microphone
A keyboard that seems quiet to the typist can still be obvious to a nearby microphone. Test from the microphone’s actual position and use the software and input gain settings used during calls or streams.
What the cited manufacturers actually establish
Logitech’s mechanical-versus-membrane comparison states that membrane keyboards are typically quieter and presents them as the better choice for quiet environments. The same comparison distinguishes mechanical sound profiles and notes that linear switches are an exception to the more audible tactile or clicky description.
The MX Mechanical product listing shows that one keyboard family can be sold with Tactile Quiet, Clicky, and Linear switches. That is why the exact configuration must be checked.
CHERRY’s MX Silent Black page describes integrated noise-reduction technology and reduced typing sound in a linear mechanical switch. It supports the existence of purpose-built silent switches, not a universal claim about every keyboard using them.
Logitech’s comparison of mechanical and analog keyboards also discusses the distinction between linear and click-oriented mechanical behavior. HP’s comparison identifies membrane and quiet mechanical options as appropriate considerations for shared spaces and remote calls.
Decision guide
| Your situation | Best starting choice | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| You need the lowest likely sound with minimal research | Membrane | Whole-keyboard construction, return terms, and real-room behavior |
| You want mechanical feedback but share a room | Quiet tactile or silent linear mechanical | Exact switch variant and evidence for the complete keyboard |
| You type beside a live microphone | Membrane or explicitly quiet mechanical | Record from the microphone position at normal typing speed |
| You enjoy an audible click and have a private room | Clicky mechanical | Whether the sound is acceptable to anyone else nearby |
| You are comparing two named products | Neither category label decides it | Switch, construction, layout, and an apples-to-apples listening test |
Bottom line
For gaming and typing where quiet matters most, choose a membrane keyboard unless you have a specific reason to prefer mechanical switches. If you do choose mechanical, skip clicky models and look for a quiet tactile or silent linear configuration, then verify the exact regional product and test the complete keyboard in its real environment. The evidence supports those tendencies, but it does not support a universal decibel ranking or a promise that one category is silent.
