Their flexible inner displays are softer, their hinges contain moving parts, and dust, grit, sharp pressure, drops, and careless folding can cause damage. Water and dust protection also varies by exact model and generation.
Manufacturer fold-cycle figures and durability claims are controlled test results, not guarantees of how long every owner’s phone will last. The safest buying and ownership decision comes from checking the specific model’s screen-protector rules, hinge test conditions, ingress rating, authorized repair options, and your own exposure to sand, debris, liquids, and impact.

What “durable” means for a foldable phone
Durability has several separate parts, and a phone can be strong in one area while vulnerable in another:

- Hinge life: whether the folding mechanism continues to open, close, and hold its positions smoothly.
- Inner-screen resilience: whether the flexible display and its protective layers tolerate normal touches, pressure, and handling.
- Ingress protection: how the exact model is rated against water and solid particles.
- Repairability: whether qualified service is available and affordable after a screen, hinge, or protector problem.
There is no independent, comparable failure-rate database showing that one foldable brand or generation lasts a particular number of years. Official figures are useful for understanding design targets and test conditions, but they should not be read as a promised service life.

Why the inner screen needs more care
A flexible OLED assembly uses softer, layered materials than the glass normally used on a non-folding phone. Google’s safety guidance for the original Pixel Fold says, “Flexible screens are softer than traditional phone screens, so avoid contact with crumbs, fingernails and sharp objects.” That is practical handling advice, not a claim that the panel will fail from a single ordinary touch.
Small particles are a bigger concern when the phone is closed. A grain of sand, a crumb, or another hard object trapped between the two halves can concentrate pressure on the inner display when you fold the phone. Google instructs owners to check that the screen and hinge are free of objects and fine particles before closing. Samsung similarly warns against allowing objects between the halves and against pressing the inner display with a hard or sharp item.
What not to do
- Do not press the inner display with a fingernail, pen, stylus tip that is not approved for that model, key, or other sharp object.
- Do not close the phone over a card, coin, grit, or other material.
- Do not force the phone past its normal open or closed position.
- Do not remove the factory-installed inner-screen protector just because it has cosmetic marks.
- Do not apply a generic third-party film unless the manufacturer explicitly approves that product and installation method.
How long do foldable hinges last?
Published fold counts describe laboratory or internal quality testing. They are not a universal expiration date, and the result depends on temperature, handling, contamination, and the particular generation.

Samsung’s 200,000-fold statement is therefore best understood as a benchmark from a controlled test. A person who opens a phone 100 times daily might reach that number in roughly five years mathematically, but real use includes drops, grit, temperature changes, and uneven force that a simple count does not capture.
Google describes the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s hinge as gearless. Its engineering explanation says removing small spaces required by older hinge gears helped the company pursue an IP68 design and free internal space. That explains the design rationale; it does not demonstrate a particular failure rate compared with another phone.
Are foldable phones waterproof or dustproof?
No foldable should be described simply as “waterproof.” Ingress ratings apply to a named model, under laboratory conditions, when the device is new. Water resistance can decline with wear, impact, disassembly, repairs, or other damage.

IP48 includes a limited solid-particle test, but Samsung still warns that no foldable is dust resistant and that liquids or particles should not be allowed into the device. Sand and fine grit remain especially relevant around the hinge and flexible display. Samsung’s description of the Galaxy Z Fold6 also mentions anti-corrosion treatment and water-protectant lubricant around hinge-driver and wiring components; that is a manufacturer design account, not immunity from contamination.

Daily care that reduces hinge and screen risk
- Inspect before folding. Look across the inner display and hinge area for grit, crumbs, hair, or another object. Remove anything visible before closing the phone.
- Use light, even pressure. Fold and unfold through the normal motion. Never slam the halves together or force a hinge that feels obstructed.
- Keep sharp contact away. Use a fingertip rather than a fingernail and keep keys, pens, and tools away from the open inner display.
- Clean gently. Samsung’s care guidance recommends a soft, dry cloth when dust or dirt is present around the hinge. Do not push a pick, brush, compressed-air nozzle, or liquid into the hinge unless the model’s own instructions specifically permit it.
- Protect the phone from loose grit. A pocket or bag containing sand, metal filings, or other abrasive debris is a higher-risk environment than an ordinary clean pocket.
- Keep liquids conservative. Even with an ingress rating, avoid deliberate submersion, salt water, chlorinated water, sprays, and wet charging. Follow the exact model’s support instructions if it gets wet.
- Use approved accessories. Cases and screen products can interfere with folding clearance. Follow the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance rather than assuming a protector made for another generation will fit.
Can you replace a foldable phone’s inner-screen protector?
Usually, the safe answer is: use the manufacturer’s approved service route, not a do-it-yourself replacement. Google’s original Pixel Fold guidance says not to remove the preinstalled protector or apply a third-party protector. Samsung says its installed main-screen protective layer is designed for repeated folding and unfolding and directs owners to an authorized Samsung service center for replacement; a charge may apply.
If the protector starts lifting or bubbling
- Stop pressing the lifted edge or trying to smooth it down with a card or fingernail.
- Do not peel the film off to “fix” the appearance.
- Check the exact model’s support instructions and contact an authorized service center.
- Ask whether the work is covered, what parts will be used, and whether the phone may be replaced or reset.
Advice for one brand does not automatically apply to another. A third-party film that appears compatible on one foldable can interfere with touch behavior, hinge clearance, or the display layers on a different model.

What happens when a foldable needs repair?
Google recommends professional repair and warns that work performed without sufficient technical expertise can cause permanent damage or injury. Depending on the service process, you may receive a replacement device, refurbished parts, or a repaired unit. Back up your data and review service terms before handing over the phone; repairs can involve data loss.
Samsung’s guidance likewise directs protector replacement to an authorized center and recommends gentle cleaning rather than invasive hinge work. Neither manufacturer’s general guidance establishes one universal price for an inner-screen or hinge repair. The amount depends on the exact model, country, parts availability, damage assessment, warranty status, and any protection plan.

- Is the damaged component the protector, cover layer, inner display assembly, hinge, frame, or more than one part?
- Will the repair use new or refurbished components?
- What is the total estimate after inspection, including labor and taxes?
- Will the phone be reset, replaced, or returned with data intact?
- What warranty applies to the repair?
- Does opening the device affect remaining water-resistance claims?
How to compare foldable durability before buying
Compare generations, not just logos. A brand’s older foldable can have different materials, hinge architecture, protector instructions, and ingress rating from its current model.

For a buyer who regularly works around sand or metal dust, a non-folding phone may be the lower-risk choice even if a foldable has a stronger published hinge claim. For a careful user in a clean environment, the convenience of a larger inner display may outweigh the additional handling requirements.
Warning signs that need attention
- A hinge suddenly becomes stiff, gritty, noisy, or unable to open to its usual angle.
- The inner display shows a persistent line, black area, flicker, dead touch zone, or new swelling.
- The factory protector lifts, bubbles, or separates near the crease.
- The phone no longer closes evenly or leaves an unusual gap between halves.
- Liquid or fine particles have entered the hinge or display area.
Do not repeatedly fold a phone to test a suspected fault, and do not insert tools to remove debris. Photograph the condition, back up data if the phone remains usable, and arrange an authorized inspection. A damaged or opened device should not be assumed to retain its original water-resistance performance.
The practical verdict
Foldables are not inherently fragile, but they demand more disciplined handling than a conventional phone. The inner screen is softer, the hinge is a moving mechanism, and dust and liquid protections are model-specific. Samsung’s 200,000-fold figure and Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold claims show what those companies say their designs or tests can achieve; they do not promise that every phone will last five or ten years in every environment.
