Yes, ZoomEye can surface internet-facing remote-access gateways, such as SSL VPN appliances, when you search by a specific product fingerprint instead of a generic word like “VPN.” The result itself needs careful reading. Each hit is an indexed observation: a record that a search engine collected at some point and that matches your query. Whether that gateway is reachable today, belongs to the organization you expected, or is affected by a known weakness is a separate question, and only validation against current system state can answer it.
What ZoomEye indexes and how you query it
ZoomEye’s API documentation describes four capabilities: asset search, vulnerability lookup and search, account quota information, and bug-bounty asset queries. For gateway discovery, asset search is the relevant one. The ZoomEye Team’s published search guide lists fields for application and product fingerprints, services, device type, operating system, ports, HTML title and body, HTTP headers, SSL information, and geographic and other filters.

The same guide documents conjunction, disjunction, negation, grouping, fuzzy matching, and exact matching. Copy operator spelling directly from the current guide rather than from older examples, because syntax is the detail most likely to change. Searches can also be scoped to the IPv4 device, IPv6 device, web, or all-data subtype. Pick the subtype deliberately, since it determines which kind of record you are querying.

Start with a fingerprint, not a category
A generic term tends to return pages and records that mention the word, including documentation, login pages, and unrelated devices. A product fingerprint is more precise. The guide’s own example is app="Cisco ASA SSL VPN". It shows how to construct a query; it is not a measure of how common that product is on the internet, and it does not guarantee that every instance is indexed.

| Query style | What it returns | What it can miss |
|---|---|---|
| Generic keyword such as “VPN” | Pages and records that mention the term, including unrelated devices | Gateways whose indexed fields never use the word |
Vendor and product fingerprint, such as app="Cisco ASA SSL VPN" |
Records the index has tagged with that application | Instances the index did not identify with that fingerprint, or did not collect at all |
| Fingerprint plus service, port, device, or geography filters | A smaller set that matches your assumptions about the deployment | Gateways on unexpected ports or outside the regions you assumed, and any record whose fields differ from your guess |
A defensive search workflow
- Define the authorized scope. List your IP ranges, domains, subsidiaries, and other assets you have permission to assess. Every hit will be checked against this list, so keep it current.
- Choose the fingerprint. Start with the vendor and product you run or expect to find, using the fingerprint vocabulary in the guide. Add service, port, or organization constraints only where your inventory supports them.
- Select the data subtype. Search IPv4 devices, IPv6 devices, web properties, and all data as separate queries if your inventory spans more than one. Do not assume one subtype covers the others.
- Record the query and the date you ran it. Keep the query text, the subtype, and the observation or update time the platform displays for each result, if it shows one.
- Compare each result with your records. Match addresses and domains against your configuration management database (CMDB), cloud inventory, and network records before deciding anything about the asset.
- Validate before classifying. Confirm the owner, service, software version, and exposure through approved internal channels, as described in the validation section below.
What a match establishes, and what it does not
- Established: the index held a record matching the fingerprint and filters when it was collected.
- Not established: that the host is reachable now. Records persist after hosts change or disappear.
- Not established: that the presumed organization owns the address or domain. Cloud reassignment, shared hosting, and outdated DNS can all produce misattributions.
- Not established: that the software version is current or that a known weakness applies. ZoomEye’s vulnerability lookup is a separate query from asset search, and neither confirms that a particular instance is affected.
- Not established: weak credentials, misconfiguration, or compromise. A fingerprint match carries none of this information.
ZoomEye’s published documentation does not promise a freshness window or claim complete coverage of gateway fingerprints, so neither should be assumed. API use is also subject to the account quotas that the quota endpoint reports, which matters if you plan a recurring check.
How fresh and how complete is the index?
The most useful independent evidence comes from the 2025 SIGCOMM paper Censys: A Map of Internet Hosts and Services, which compared internet host and service search engines, ZoomEye among them. Two findings matter for gateway work. Data freshness varied substantially across engines, and some services reported in ZoomEye were more than three years old in the study’s comparison. No engine captured every service that the other engines reported, so no single platform should be treated as a complete census.

Read those findings with their limits in view. They describe the study’s own scans, sample, and observation dates, not ZoomEye’s behavior today, which may have changed since 2025. The authors also note that API and pricing limits constrained parts of their methodology. The coverage figures the paper reports for particular country and protocol groups, and its sampled all-port estimate for Censys, apply to that sample only and are not ZoomEye-wide performance scores.

Why the age of a record changes its meaning
A gateway can change in several ways after it is indexed: it may be patched, moved to a new address, reassigned to another customer, or decommissioned, while the old record remains visible. A three-year-old observation describes a host that may no longer exist in that form. Treat the collection date as part of the finding and write it down with the result.

Comparing internet-exposure search platforms
If you compare internet-exposure search platforms, apply the same axes to each one. The table shows what to check on each axis.
| Axis | Why it matters | How to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Freshness and observation age | Old records can describe hosts that have changed or disappeared | Look for collection or update dates on each record, and search a known asset you own to see how current its record is |
| Port and protocol coverage | Gateways often run on uncommon ports, which broad scans may miss | Confirm whether a known gateway on a non-standard port is indexed |
| Product and gateway fingerprint coverage | A missing fingerprint hides a product from every query that depends on it | Run the fingerprint for a product you know is deployed and compare the results with your inventory |
| Geographic and network vantage points | Different vantage points can see different hosts | Check where the platform’s observations come from, if it documents this |
| Search fields, API access, quota, and plan limits | Limits determine whether a repeatable process is practical | Confirm the fields you need, the subtypes available, and your account quota before building a recurring check |
| Validation and collection date | A displayed observation is not the same as a verified one | Check whether the platform states that a result has been validated, and when it was collected |
Validating a result before you act
Treat every hit as a lead to be classified. Start with ownership, because it determines who acts and how.

An address in your inventory that you did not expect
- Match the address and any associated domain against your CMDB, cloud accounts, and network records to confirm the asset and its owner.
- Confirm the service, software version, and exposure through approved internal channels, such as asset-management data, the device’s own administrative console, or perimeter checks your security policy authorizes.
- Classify the result as confirmed, stale, or not yours, and record the date of each check.
An asset you need to keep public
Move directly to the reduction steps below. A gateway that must remain reachable needs ongoing control, not a one-time fix.
An address that belongs to someone else
Do not connect to it, attempt a login, or test the service. A search reads records that already exist, while contacting the host is a separate act that requires authorization from its owner. Note the observation and its date. If you believe it reveals a real exposure, pass it to the organization through a contact channel it publishes, or to a national computer security incident response team.

Reducing exposure that should not exist
CISA’s Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance, published June 4, 2025, lays out a sequence that most asset owners can follow. It names specialized asset-search platforms among possible visibility tools and states that naming them is not an endorsement.
Quick Recap
- Inventory internet-accessible assets, including ones nobody remembers deploying.
- Decide whether each exposure is operationally necessary. If no business function requires it, remove or restrict it.
- Protect the gateways that must stay public:
- Change default passwords.
- Apply current patches.
- Replace unsupported devices or software.
- Require multi-factor authentication where the gateway supports it.
- Route administrative access through a monitored jump host.
- Monitor traffic to and from the service.
- Reassess routinely. A fixed gateway can keep appearing in older index records until the platform collects it again, so confirm current state directly rather than waiting for a search result to clear.
