A production-minded MCP server starts with three decisions: use stdio when a client launches a local process, use Streamable HTTP for a remote service, and choose deliberately whether HTTP sessions need server-side state. Authentication, session handling, and recovery then follow the transport: HTTP requests need bearer authorization and audience checks; stdio servers obtain credentials from their environment; and a dropped connection is not proof that an operation was cancelled or safe to retry.
This walkthrough follows the MCP TypeScript SDK server guide and the MCP protocol edition dated 2025-11-25. The guide and specification do not establish a specific SDK release for this article, so no package version or copy-and-paste SDK API is claimed. Pin a release that matches the documentation you use, then verify its API and the protocol revision during implementation. MCP TypeScript SDK server guide · MCP Transports specification, 2025-11-25

1. Choose how clients will connect
MCP messages use JSON-RPC. The two standard transport choices have different deployment and security requirements; they are not interchangeable settings on the same kind of connection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Transport | Use it when | What the server must handle |
|---|---|---|
| stdio | A local MCP client starts the server as a child process. | Read and write newline-delimited JSON-RPC messages on standard input and output. Keep standard output exclusively for MCP messages; write logs to standard error. |
| Streamable HTTP | Clients connect to a remote server over HTTP. | Serve MCP at one endpoint using POST and GET. Support server-sent events (SSE) when streaming or server-to-client messages are needed, and implement HTTP authentication and connection protections. |
The official TypeScript SDK guide presents Streamable HTTP as the modern remote transport. HTTP+SSE is a legacy compatibility option, not the default choice for a new server; add it only when a specific older client requires it. See the SDK server guide and the transport specification.

Keep the server’s job small
Start with one useful tool and a narrow input contract. For example, a read-only tool might accept a resource identifier, check that the caller may access it, and return a bounded result. Define its name, input schema, permission rule, and failure behavior before adding transport complexity. Treat every tool input as untrusted, even if the client UI normally validates it.
Keep business logic separate from transport and authorization. The same operation can then be exposed over stdio or HTTP without making the tool itself responsible for parsing JSON-RPC, managing sessions, or deciding how credentials are transmitted.
2. Respect initialization and message boundaries
Do not treat a new connection as ready for ordinary tool calls immediately. MCP initialization is the first lifecycle exchange: client and server negotiate a protocol version and capabilities, and successful initialization is followed by the client’s notifications/initialized notification before normal operation. Implement the lifecycle for the protocol revision and SDK release you selected rather than transplanting an unpinned snippet. The sequence is defined in the MCP lifecycle specification.

For stdio, framing is newline-delimited JSON-RPC. Any startup banner, debug print, or stack trace written to standard output can corrupt the message stream. Route diagnostics to standard error and keep protocol output clean. For HTTP, expose a single MCP endpoint and implement the POST and GET behavior required by the transport rather than treating it as an ordinary JSON REST route.
3. Apply credentials according to the transport
Remote Streamable HTTP: authorize every request
For HTTP deployments, follow MCP’s authorization model for the deployment rather than inventing a query-parameter token convention. Send bearer authorization on every HTTP request, including requests associated with an existing logical session. Access tokens must not appear in URI query strings. The protocol authorization requirements are in the MCP authorization specification.
- Validate the token, including its validity period and intended audience. A valid signature alone does not establish that a token was issued for this MCP server.
- Bind validation to the server’s resource identifier or URL as appropriate. The SDK guide’s bearer-middleware example uses an expected resource so tokens for a different resource, or tokens with no reported resource, are rejected.
- Return HTTP 401 when authorization is missing or the token is invalid or expired. Return HTTP 403 when the caller is authenticated but lacks the required permission.
- When a runtime scope failure is involved, the specification recommends a 403 response with a Bearer
WWW-Authenticatechallenge identifyinginsufficient_scopeand the needed scopes. A malformed authorization request is a distinct 400 case.
Where the deployment uses OAuth discovery, implement the authorization metadata and resource-server behavior expected by the chosen client and protocol revision. Do not assume that registering a bearer-token check by itself provides discovery, scope negotiation, or a secure audience policy. The SDK guide documents its middleware example and resource-audience check.
Local stdio: obtain secrets from the environment
The MCP authorization specification says stdio implementations should not use its HTTP OAuth procedure; retrieve credentials from the environment instead. Keep secrets out of source code, command-line arguments where they could be exposed, logs, and tool error messages. The host application determines how those environment values are provisioned and protected; the protocol does not prescribe a universal secret-storage system. See the authorization specification.

4. Protect the HTTP boundary before handling tools
Authentication is not a substitute for safe network exposure. A remote MCP endpoint should validate the request origin, bind to an intended interface, authenticate connections, and enforce token audience and permission checks before dispatching work.
- Validate Origin. The transport specification says servers must validate the
Originheader on incoming connections to prevent DNS rebinding attacks. - Bind intentionally. For a local-only HTTP server, prefer a localhost interface instead of listening on every network interface. For a remote service, expose it only through the network boundary intended for its clients.
- Authenticate each HTTP request. A session identifier does not replace a bearer token or authorize a request by itself.
- Check the token audience and permissions. Reject a token intended for another service and distinguish missing/invalid authorization from insufficient privileges.
These protections are specified in the transport specification, the authorization specification, and the SDK server guide.
5. Decide whether HTTP sessions need server-side state
Streamable HTTP can be operated statelessly or with stateful sessions. Make the choice based on what the service actually needs, not on an assumption that every HTTP connection must map to persistent server memory.

| Mode | Choose it when | Operational consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Stateless | The server does not need transport session tracking for its behavior. | Simpler lifecycle and scaling model; do not depend on per-session in-memory transport state. |
| Stateful | The design needs session-specific state or session-dependent capabilities. | Track session transports, expire idle sessions, and cap concurrent sessions to control memory use. |
The TypeScript SDK guide describes a stateful model with an in-memory transport per session. That can work for a single process, but in-memory session state is not automatically shared across replicas. A multi-node service needs an explicit design for shared persistence, message routing, or a stateless approach; the guide discusses those deployment patterns at ts.sdk.modelcontextprotocol.io/server.
Set lifecycle limits for stateful sessions
If sessions are stateful, define their lifecycle as part of the service rather than letting them accumulate indefinitely. Decide what counts as idle, when a session expires, what cleanup releases, and how many concurrent sessions the process can sustain. Choose limits from the service’s resource budget and expected load; the cited guide does not prescribe universal timeout or capacity numbers.
Do not confuse an HTTP session with authentication. Validate authorization on each request even when it carries an identifier for an existing session. A session identifies protocol state; it does not make a new request trusted.

6. Separate tool errors, authorization failures, and interruptions
Different failures belong to different layers. Returning the wrong kind of error can mislead clients—for example, turning a permission denial into a successful tool result, or treating a broken connection as proof that work never began.
| What happened | How to represent it | What the client should infer |
|---|---|---|
| Tool logic failed after an authorized call | Return a tool result with isError: true and a useful, safe explanation. |
The tool ran but did not complete successfully. Do not expose credentials, internal stack traces, or sensitive implementation details. |
| Authorization is absent, invalid, or expired | HTTP 401. | The request needs valid authorization before the protected operation can proceed. |
| The caller is authenticated but lacks permission | HTTP 403; use an insufficient-scope challenge when applicable. | Valid authentication did not grant the permission required for this request. |
| The connection drops during a request or stream | Use transport reconnection or resumption where supported; do not label it a tool error or infer cancellation. | The outcome may be unknown until the client resumes or checks the operation’s state. |
The SDK guide demonstrates tool results marked with isError; HTTP authorization status meanings come from the authorization specification.

7. Recover connections without duplicating side effects
With Streamable HTTP, a client may reconnect after a network interruption. SSE streams can support resumption when the server emits event IDs and retains replayable events; a reconnecting client can supply Last-Event-ID. These mechanisms can reduce message loss, but they do not establish that an arbitrary tool operation is safe to execute again.
A disconnection is not cancellation. The transport specification says disconnection should not be interpreted as the client cancelling its request. If the client intends to cancel work, use the protocol’s explicit cancellation mechanism. If a connection disappears while a mutating tool is running, the client may not know whether the action completed.
For side-effecting tools—such as creating, deleting, or submitting something—design application-level duplicate protection. One common pattern is an operation or idempotency key stored with the result, so a repeated request with the same key returns the known outcome rather than applying the action twice. The key’s scope, persistence, and retention are application decisions, not guarantees supplied by MCP transport resumption. Read-only operations may have different retry risks, but still require the application to consider stale data and repeated cost.
For transport behavior and the distinction between reconnection and cancellation, consult the MCP Transports specification.
Quick Recap
8. Production-readiness checks before exposure
- Choose stdio for client-launched local processes, or Streamable HTTP for remote access; add legacy HTTP+SSE only for a known compatibility need.
- Keep stdio stdout protocol-only and send diagnostics to stderr.
- Implement initialization and the negotiated protocol lifecycle before normal tool handling.
- For HTTP, validate Origin, bind to the intended interface, authenticate each request, check audience, and distinguish 401 from 403.
- Keep credentials out of URLs, source code, logs, and user-facing error details.
- Use stateless HTTP unless the design requires session state. If stateful, expire idle sessions, cap concurrent sessions, and plan explicitly for multi-node routing or shared state.
- Return tool failures as tool errors, not HTTP authorization failures; keep the explanation useful without leaking internals.
- Define retry and duplicate-execution behavior for each side-effecting tool rather than assuming that reconnecting makes a retry safe.
