McAfee WebAdvisor is a free browsing-safety utility that McAfee says can warn about risky links and mistyped web addresses, scan downloads for known risks, and check whether firewall and antivirus protection are active. It is an extra layer—not a guarantee that every unsafe site or file will be detected. Its compatibility details vary across McAfee pages, so check the current requirements for your region and browser before installing.
What McAfee WebAdvisor does
McAfee describes WebAdvisor as a free utility for safer searching and browsing. Its advertised features include:

These are McAfee’s descriptions of the product’s functions, not independently measured detection results. McAfee’s product page calls WebAdvisor a “trusty companion” for browsing and searching and also advertises “Over 600 million protected devices and counting.” That figure is a broad company-published claim; the page does not define the count or identify it as specific to WebAdvisor. How to download and install WebAdvisor
McAfee’s U.S. product FAQ describes an installer-based process. Use McAfee’s official page or your browser’s official extension marketplace, and check the publisher name and requested permissions before proceeding.

- Open McAfee’s WebAdvisor product page and select Free Download.
- Save the setup file. If your browser asks whether to allow the download, approve it only if you are on McAfee’s official site and intended to download the installer.
- Open the downloaded setup file and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Restart your browser if prompted. McAfee says you may then be asked whether to make McAfee Secure Search, which uses Yahoo on supported browsers, your default search provider. Choose according to your search preference; accepting changes the browser’s default search provider.
Before installing any browser extension, McAfee’s general safety guidance recommends checking the developer, privacy policy, permissions, user reviews, and update history. Browser and operating-system compatibility
McAfee’s WebAdvisor product page and its system-requirements information do not present identical platform lists. The product page lists Windows 10 and Internet Explorer 10 or later, Chromium-based Edge, another Edge entry, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari for Mac and iOS, with a note that Yahoo Secure Search is unavailable in some cases. Because those lists differ and support can vary by region, device, and product version, don’t assume a browser or mobile combination is supported based on a general list. Check McAfee’s current regional requirements and the relevant browser marketplace for the exact operating system and browser version you use.

When a link or download raises a concern, WebAdvisor may provide a warning or check based on its advertised features. The product page does not promise that it blocks every malicious website or detects every harmful download. Treat a warning as useful information, and treat the absence of a warning as no guarantee that a destination or file is safe.

Use it alongside ordinary precautions: inspect a link’s destination before opening it, download files only from trusted sources, and keep your browser and operating system updated. McAfee’s published product information establishes the advertised features, but it does not provide an independent comparative detection test or detailed WebAdvisor-specific data-collection explanation. Don’t infer a detection rate or privacy practice from the feature list alone.
