McAfee Secure VPN is included with several McAfee consumer security plans, rather than sold as a standalone physical product. McAfee says it encrypts connections on public or remote networks and can turn on automatically on unsecure networks. What you can use depends on your device, operating system, plan, and country; check those details before subscribing.
What McAfee Secure VPN does—and what it does not
A virtual private network (VPN) routes internet traffic through an encrypted connection. McAfee describes Secure VPN as a way to help hide your IP address and online activity when connecting from a remote or public location. It recommends using the service on untrusted Wi-Fi, such as at an airport, cafe, or hotel, particularly for purchases or financial transactions. These are McAfee’s product descriptions and recommendations, not independent findings about protection or performance. McAfee’s US Secure VPN page says the service uses AES 256-bit encryption and offers connections in almost 50 countries.

McAfee lists Secure VPN for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and ChromeOS on its US product page. Its system requirements for McAfee+ and Total Protection specify these minimums; requirements can differ by product or region, so check the listing for the subscription you intend to use. How to turn on the VPN
Windows
- Open the McAfee app.
- Select the Secure VPN tile.
- Toggle the VPN on.
- For additional VPN settings, open Settings beside Connection Settings.
McAfee says Secure VPN can turn on automatically when a device joins an unsecure network, and that users may choose to leave it on. The company’s product page phrases the feature as: “VPN turns on for you on unsecure networks.” Treat this as McAfee’s feature claim, not as a behavior independently tested here. For Android and iOS, use the current in-app directions because settings and protocol controls differ by platform.
Protocols and controls vary by platform
McAfee documents WireGuard and OpenVPN, but availability and manual controls depend on the operating system and product. Its support article says WireGuard is available in McAfee Security on Android and iOS and in LiveSafe and Total Protection on Windows; McAfee’s macOS VPN apps do not support WireGuard. Android and iOS users can manually select a protocol. Windows and macOS users cannot manually choose one, and McAfee recommends leaving the setting at Auto where it is available. Plans, device limits, and terms to check
McAfee’s US plan page lists Secure VPN in Basic, Essential, and Advanced. The device allowances shown are one device for Basic, up to five for Essential, and unlimited devices for one user on Advanced. These are current US listing details, not a promise that the same plans or allowances apply in every country. Check McAfee’s US page or the relevant regional page for current availability and terms.
The US page marks displayed first-term prices as introductory offers for new customers; prices can change. It also displays a 30-day money-back guarantee, but eligibility and refund conditions depend on the offer and country. Do not assume the introductory price is the renewal price.

As one regional example, McAfee’s Ireland page says subscriptions renew automatically for another term unless cancelled, renewal prices may change, and a full refund request may be made within 30 days of initial purchase or within 60 days of automatic renewal. What McAfee says about privacy—and what the available evidence establishes
McAfee’s US product page says it does not log or track what users do online and says its VPN technology has been independently reviewed and audited, linking that statement to TunnelBear. Those are McAfee’s claims. The cited product information does not provide the audit report or establish its date, scope, or applicability to every McAfee Secure VPN implementation; it also does not independently confirm current logging practices. Readers who need a VPN for a specific privacy requirement should seek current, detailed documentation that addresses that requirement rather than treating a general vendor statement as independent verification.
