ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can all offer ways to consult web information, but an answer that sounds current is not proof that it used live sources—or that its claims are accurate. Official help pages document different search and source-checking features; they do not verify this headline’s personal comparison or establish which service gave the freshest answer.
If an answer about a developing story seems stale, first check whether web search was available and used, then inspect the cited material against a dated primary source. Search access, citations, and freshness are separate questions.

Why an AI answer about “right now” can still be outdated
A model’s general knowledge and its ability to search the web are distinct. A response may draw on general knowledge, web search, or a combination, depending on the service, account, settings, and prompt. Even when search is available, it may not run for every question; the service may also face usage limits, workspace controls, or connectivity constraints.

A page may have been published recently but describe an older event, while a primary source may have been updated after the answer was generated. For fast-changing topics, compare the answer’s specific claims with sources that show when information was published or updated.

Could ChatGPT be using cached information instead of live search?
In a specific configuration, yes. OpenAI documents an offline-search option for eligible ChatGPT workspaces. It uses indexed and cached web content rather than live search; coverage and freshness can vary, and results may be older than the live web. That could explain a stale response in a workspace using this option, but it does not show that any particular ChatGPT answer used cached content. OpenAI’s offline web search documentation explains the limitation.

How to check a surprising answer
- Ask whether search was used. Check for a search indicator or citations, or explicitly ask the service to search the web. The available controls differ by service and can depend on account or workspace settings.
- Open the sources. Confirm that a source says what the answer claims, rather than merely mentioning the same topic. Check its publication or update date.
- Verify important claims against a dated primary source. For a current announcement, look for the organization or authority responsible for it. A search result or citation is a lead to inspect, not a guarantee of accuracy.
- Separate fact from uncertainty. Notice whether the answer identifies what it cannot confirm, and whether its wording makes a developing or disputed claim sound settled.
- Check the relevant settings. Search access can depend on plan limits, workspace controls, connectivity, or feature availability. For ChatGPT in eligible workspaces, offline search is one documented configuration that may return cached rather than live material.
How to make a fair ChatGPT–Claude–Gemini comparison
A useful side-by-side test needs to hold the conditions steady and preserve what each service actually returned. A personal impression can identify a question worth checking, but one anecdote cannot establish an overall winner.

- Record the plan, region, account or workspace settings, whether search was enabled or invoked, and any visible model or version label.
- Save each complete answer and its linked sources; do not compare paraphrases from memory.
- Check whether the sources directly support the answer’s individual claims, whether the answer acknowledges uncertainty, and how well it matches a dated primary source.
Without the original prompts, session dates, settings, model details, and full outputs, the headline’s experience cannot be treated as a controlled comparison. The official feature descriptions above do not establish what happened in that session.
