For most Windows 11 home users who want antivirus protection without another subscription, Microsoft Defender is the sensible starting point. McAfee Total Protection is also a strong option: in AV-TEST’s July–August 2026 test, both products earned full protection and usability scores, while McAfee had a half-point lead in performance. That lab difference is modest, not proof McAfee will make every PC feel faster.
How McAfee and Windows Defender compare
The clearest recent head-to-head comparison is AV-TEST’s July–August 2026 Windows 11 home-user round. It tested current public versions with default settings, allowing product updates and cloud queries. Both products received the top protection and usability scores; McAfee scored slightly higher for performance.

| Category | McAfee Total Protection 1.39 | Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Consumer) 4.18 |
|---|---|---|
| Protection | 6/6 | 6/6 |
| Performance | 6/6 | 5.5/6 |
| Usability | 6/6 | 6/6 |
| Total | 18/18 | 17.5/18 |
AV-TEST awards its “TOP PRODUCT” designation at 17.5 of 18 points, so both products cleared that threshold. The half-point performance gap is a result under the lab’s workload, not a guarantee of a noticeable speed difference on an individual computer. AV-TEST’s Windows home-user results also show task-specific effects rather than one universal measure of speed.

What the protection scores mean
In that same round, McAfee’s real-world zero-day protection result was 99.3% in July and 100% in August; Defender recorded 100% in both months. Both detected 100% of the test’s recent widespread-malware reference set in both months. These results describe specific samples and test periods. They cannot predict whether a particular user will encounter or block a future threat.
#1 Best Overall
- THREAT DETECTION – Stay one step ahead. Suspicious links, risky sites, viruses, and scams, caught automatically before they reach you.
- PERSONAL INFO PROTECTION – Keep your personal info safer. Identity monitoring watches for your exposed info and tells you what to do about it.
- SECURE CONNECTIONS – Just a few easy clicks, and we'll automatically protect your info on public Wi‑Fi, every time you connect.
- GUIDED ACTION – Know what matters and what to do next. Clear alerts and simple guidance make it easy to take action.
- MORE THAN ANTIVIRUS – Scam protection, identity monitoring, VPN, web protection, and antivirus work together to protect you, all in one place.
The scores are not evidence that Defender is broadly ineffective or that McAfee is a weak alternative. In AV-TEST’s April 2026 round, both products also earned 6/6 in protection, performance and usability. AV-TEST’s test results are useful comparisons, but results can vary by round, version and methodology.
What changes when the PC is offline
Cloud connectivity is one practical difference to consider. AV-Comparatives reported 89.2% offline detection for Defender in its March 2026 malware test. Its analysis says Defender’s cloud-assisted intelligence works well with stable connectivity, while local detection capabilities become more important when a device is offline, on a restricted network or deliberately prevented from reaching cloud services. That is a particular operating condition, not a general verdict against Defender.

- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
The March test used 10,000 malware samples on fully updated Windows 11 64-bit systems and included both McAfee Total Protection 1.36 and Defender 4.18. The lab tested offline and online scanning, then ran samples missed by scans to assess behavioral protection, and included a false-alarm test. It was a different test period and methodology from AV-TEST’s July–August round, so its figures should not be merged with AV-TEST scores into a single ranking. What you get without paying for another antivirus
Microsoft Defender is built into Windows and provides real-time protection without a separate installation or subscription, according to AV-Comparatives. The organization describes it as “a credible modern security solution,” while noting that third-party security tools can add capabilities beyond the basics. For someone who mainly wants baseline malware protection on a normally connected Windows 11 PC, that makes Defender a practical default.

McAfee is a paid security suite rather than a like-for-like built-in replacement in the subscription sense. Whether its current extra services justify the cost depends on what the plan actually includes and what you will use. Verify the current device coverage, features, price, renewal terms, support and compatibility directly with McAfee before buying; those terms can vary and are not established by the lab scores.
Which should you choose?
Choose Defender if
- You want built-in Windows protection without adding a separate antivirus subscription.
- Your PC usually has reliable internet access and your needs are covered by baseline malware protection.
- You prefer to avoid paying for a suite unless you have a specific use for its current extras.
Consider McAfee if
- You have identified features in its current paid plan that you will actually use.
- You have checked the subscription price, renewal conditions, device coverage and compatibility and consider them worthwhile.
- You value its strong showing in the recent AV-TEST comparison, while understanding that the small performance-score lead is not a personal-device speed guarantee.
For offline or restricted-network PCs
Do not decide from a single offline percentage alone. If a device regularly works without stable internet access, include offline detection and local protection in your comparison, and check current independent test results for the products and versions you are considering.

How to read antivirus test results fairly
- Compare like with like. AV-TEST’s August 2026 results cover McAfee Total Protection 1.39 and Defender 4.18; AV-Comparatives’ March 2026 malware test used McAfee 1.36 and Defender 4.18.
- Look beyond one category. Protection, system impact, usability, false alarms and offline behavior answer different questions.
- Remember the test conditions. AV-TEST used Windows 11 Professional 64-bit, default settings, current public versions, and allowed updates and cloud queries. Real systems, settings and network conditions differ.
- Keep Windows and apps updated. AV-Comparatives notes that patching reduces exploit risk; antivirus scores alone do not measure every part of a user’s security.
AV-Comparatives cautions against choosing based on one test or test type and recommends weighing price, ease of use, compatibility and support as well. Its Real-World Protection Test uses updated Windows 11 Pro 64-bit systems with current third-party software. Independent test results are evidence about performance under defined conditions, not a guarantee about an individual user’s future infection risk.
