To keep the sender, recipients, subject, and date off a printout, the most reliable workaround is to copy the email body into a document and print that. Gmail and Outlook’s standard print instructions do not provide one universal switch for removing those details. If you mean the URL or date added by your browser, turn off Headers and footers in the browser’s print dialog instead.
First, identify which “header” you want to remove
- Email details: the visible From, To, Subject, and date information at the start of a message.
- Technical message headers: delivery and routing metadata used to investigate an email. These are different from the visible details and are not controlled by ordinary print settings. In Gmail, Show original displays technical headers; it is not a print option.
- Browser print headers and footers: page details such as a URL, title, date, or page number that a browser may add to a printout.
Removing browser headers and footers will not remove the email’s own sender or recipient details.

Gmail: print a message or copy only its body
Print one message or a conversation
- Open the email on your computer.
- To print one message, select More at the top right of the message, then Print. To print the whole conversation, open it and select Print all.
- Review the print preview before printing, especially for a long message or thread.
Google’s documented print steps do not include a control for hiding the visible email details. If they must be excluded, select and copy the body text, paste it into a document, and print the document. Check the document preview to make sure the copied content and formatting are right.
Gmail confidential mode can prevent printing the message text and attachments.

Outlook: use print preview or print a selection
Outlook’s controls vary among new Outlook, classic Outlook, and Outlook on the web. The general workflow is to select or open the message and choose Print. In classic Outlook, print styles and Page Setup provide options for adjusting fonts and page properties. Check the preview and the controls in your version; do not assume classic Outlook’s options are available in new Outlook or the web version.
Print only selected content through a browser

- Open the message and choose View in Browser from the Move actions.
- In the browser window, select the text or content you want to print.
- Open the browser’s print command. Under Page Range, choose Selection, then print.
This prints the selected content rather than the message as a whole. Confirm that your browser offers the Selection page-range option and inspect the preview before printing. For repeated custom formatting in classic Outlook, its print-style controls may help, but they are version-specific.
Apple Mail and iCloud Mail
Apple’s iCloud Mail guidance explains how to show or hide all headers while viewing a message, but that display setting does not establish that the ordinary sender, recipient, subject, and date details will be omitted from a printout. For a body-only result, copy the message body into a document and verify the print preview. Apple Mail’s exact current print controls are not established here.

Remove browser-added headers and footers
If the unwanted line is a URL, title, date, or page number added to each printed page, open the browser’s print dialog and turn off Headers and footers. The option changes browser-generated page details; it does not remove email details embedded in the message.

Before you print
- Use the preview to catch unwanted details, cut-off text, or extra pages.
- For a body-only copy, check that you have not included the sender details while selecting text.
- If printing to PDF, apply the same preview checks; saving as a PDF does not itself remove email details.
