Mbps vs. MB/s: What’s the Difference Between Bits and Bytes?

Mbps measures megabits per second; MB/s measures megabytes per second. Because one byte equals eight bits, divide Mbps by eight to get the ideal decimal MB/s equivalent—but real downloads can be slower.

Mbps means megabits per second, while MB/s means megabytes per second. The lowercase b is a bit; the uppercase B is a byte. Because one byte contains eight bits, divide a Mbps figure by eight to express the same decimal rate in MB/s. Thus, 100 Mbps equals 12.5 MB/s in an ideal unit conversion—not a guarantee that a download will sustain 12.5 MB/s.

The short answer: Mbps and MB/s measure the same kind of thing in different units

Both Mbps and MB/s describe a data rate: how much information moves each second. They use different basic units:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Mbps is megabits per second. Internet providers and network equipment commonly advertise connection speeds this way.
  • MB/s is megabytes per second. Operating systems, download windows and file-transfer tools commonly show this unit.

A bit is a single binary digit. A byte is a group of eight bits; the NIST glossary defines a byte as “A sequence of eight bits.” NIST’s Byte glossary entry provides that definition. The eight-to-one relationship is why the numerical value changes when you switch units.

For decimal mega units, the conversion is:

  • Mbps ÷ 8 = MB/s
  • MB/s × 8 = Mbps

For example, a 100 Mbps plan corresponds to 12.5 MB/s before overhead, congestion or any other real-world limitation is considered.

Why capitalization matters

The difference between b and B is not cosmetic. In standard usage, lowercase b means bit and uppercase B means byte. Writing “100 Mbps” means 100 megabits per second; writing “100 MB/s” means 100 megabytes per second, which is eight times as much data under the same prefix convention.

You may also see MBps instead of MB/s. Microsoft’s style guidance uses Mbps for megabits per second and MBps for megabytes per second, while MB/s makes the “per second” relationship especially visible. The capitalization still carries the meaning. The NIST and Microsoft terminology references are NIST’s Mbps glossary entry and the Microsoft Style Guide’s bit and byte terms.

When reading a specification, check the letter before comparing numbers. A larger-looking number may simply be expressed in the smaller bit unit.

Bits, bytes, megabits and megabytes explained

Bit

A bit is the smallest common unit of digital information and can represent a zero or a one. Data-rate labels based on bits are useful for describing the capacity of a network link, because network traffic is transmitted as streams of bits.

Byte

A byte contains eight bits. File sizes are usually presented in bytes because bytes are convenient for describing text, photos, applications and other stored data.

Decimal mega prefixes

NIST defines one megabit (Mbit) as 1,000,000 bits and one megabyte (MB) as 1,000,000 bytes. With those decimal definitions, 1 MB contains 8,000,000 bits, so 1 MB/s is exactly 8 Mbps as a unit conversion. See NIST’s definitions of SI units and binary prefixes.

Binary prefixes: MiB and Mib

Binary prefixes are different. A mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes, not 1,000,000 bytes. A mebibit (Mib) likewise uses a power-of-two definition. Software that displays MiB/s is using a binary byte unit, so converting it to Mbps requires attention to the exact prefixes rather than blindly applying a decimal label. Do not silently substitute MiB for MB: they are distinct units.

How to convert Mbps to MB/s

The one-step formula

Take the Mbps number and divide by eight:

MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8

Suppose a connection is rated at 250 Mbps:

250 ÷ 8 = 31.25 MB/s

The result is the equivalent decimal rate. It does not predict that every website or download server will deliver 31.25 MB/s.

Converting MB/s back to Mbps

Multiply the MB/s value by eight:

Mbps = MB/s × 8

A transfer shown as 40 MB/s is equivalent to:

40 × 8 = 320 Mbps

Common conversions

Advertised or measured network rate Equivalent decimal rate Calculation
8 Mbps 1 MB/s 8 ÷ 8
25 Mbps 3.125 MB/s 25 ÷ 8
50 Mbps 6.25 MB/s 50 ÷ 8
100 Mbps 12.5 MB/s 100 ÷ 8
200 Mbps 25 MB/s 200 ÷ 8
500 Mbps 62.5 MB/s 500 ÷ 8
1,000 Mbps (1 Gbps) 125 MB/s 1,000 ÷ 8

These values use eight bits per byte and decimal mega prefixes. They are equivalent units, not service-level promises.

How many MB/s is 100 Mbps?

100 Mbps is 12.5 MB/s under decimal units:

100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s

If a download utility reports around 12.5 MB/s under ideal conditions, its displayed rate is consistent with a 100 Mbps link. A lower number does not automatically indicate a fault, because the conversion describes the link’s theoretical bit rate rather than the complete application transfer.

Why is a download slower than the internet plan?

A plan’s Mbps figure and an application’s MB/s figure are related, but they are not measurements taken at the same point in the transfer. NTIA’s Broadband reference guide presents download duration as approximate, reflecting the difference between a stated broadband rate and an observed transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several limits can reduce the displayed MB/s:

  • Protocol overhead: Headers, acknowledgements, encryption and other control information consume part of the link’s capacity. Not all transmitted bits are file payload.
  • Server capacity: The remote server may limit each connection or be busy serving many users.
  • Path congestion: Traffic between your home and the server can encounter a busy Wi-Fi channel, access point, ISP segment, exchange or internet route.
  • Wi-Fi conditions: Distance, walls, interference, channel width and the capabilities of the client and access point can keep a wireless transfer below the internet connection’s rating.
  • Local hardware: A slow storage device, overloaded processor, VPN, security scan or older network adapter can become the bottleneck.
  • Test methodology: A single download is an application result, not a controlled measurement of the access link. Different servers and times can produce different values.

For that reason, treat 12.5 MB/s as the decimal equivalent of 100 Mbps, not as a guaranteed minimum download speed. A sustained result somewhat below the mathematical maximum can be normal; a persistent, large shortfall across multiple suitable tests warrants troubleshooting.

Estimate how long a download will take

To estimate duration, put the file size and transfer rate in compatible units. If the file is measured in megabytes and the expected transfer is in MB/s, use:

time in seconds = file size in MB ÷ rate in MB/s

Example: a 1,000 MB file on a 100 Mbps connection

  1. Convert the connection: 100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s.
  2. Divide the file size by that equivalent rate: 1,000 MB ÷ 12.5 MB/s = 80 seconds.
  3. Express the result: 80 seconds is 1 minute 20 seconds.

This is an idealized estimate. The actual transfer can take longer because the advertised rate may not be sustained and because protocol overhead, congestion, server limits and local conditions affect payload throughput. NTIA uses the same general relationship between file size and broadband speed for approximate download-time illustrations.

Example: a 4.7 GB file on a 500 Mbps connection

Using decimal units, 4.7 GB is 4,700 MB and 500 Mbps converts to 62.5 MB/s:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4,700 MB ÷ 62.5 MB/s = 75.2 seconds

That is about 1 minute 15 seconds in the ideal calculation. If the file-size display uses GiB or the transfer tool uses MiB/s, keep the prefixes consistent before calculating.

How to read speed-test and download numbers together

  1. Identify the unit in each display. Look for Mbps, Mb/s, MB/s, MBps, MiB/s or Gbps. Do not compare the numeric values until the units match.
  2. Convert the network result to bytes per second. Divide Mbps by eight for a decimal MB/s comparison.
  3. Check whether the test is measuring the same path. A speed test may use a nearby test server, while your download comes from a distant content server.
  4. Repeat under consistent conditions. Compare several runs at similar times, preferably with a wired connection or a strong, uncongested Wi-Fi signal.
  5. Check the local bottleneck. If multiple servers show the same low result, inspect Wi-Fi signal quality, Ethernet-link speed, background traffic, VPN use, security software and disk activity.

These steps help separate a unit misunderstanding from a genuine performance problem. They do not turn an advertised rate into a guaranteed application rate.

Mbps, MB/s, Gbps and related labels

Label Meaning Decimal relationship
Mbps Megabits per second 1 Mbps = 1,000,000 bits/s
MB/s or MBps Megabytes per second 1 MB/s = 8 Mbps
Gbps Gigabits per second 1 Gbps = 1,000 Mbps
GB/s Gigabytes per second 1 GB/s = 8 Gbps = 8,000 Mbps
MiB/s Mebibytes per second Binary byte unit; do not treat it as decimal MB/s

Prefixes can compound confusion. The “mega” and “giga” relationships above use decimal SI-style quantities. Binary units such as MiB are defined separately, so a program’s unit label matters when you calculate storage or transfer time.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Dividing by 1,000 instead of eight

Changing mega to kilo is a prefix conversion; changing bits to bytes is a unit conversion. To turn Mbps into MB/s, divide by eight. The decimal mega prefix remains the same on both sides.

Reading MB as megabits

Uppercase B denotes bytes. A file marked 100 MB is approximately 100 million bytes under decimal notation, not 100 megabits. Converting its size to bits requires multiplying by eight.

Assuming a conversion is a performance guarantee

The arithmetic says what the rates would be if expressed in another unit. It does not account for overhead, route conditions, server limits or local hardware, so an actual transfer can be lower.

Mixing MB with MiB

MB and MiB are not interchangeable. If one value is decimal and the other binary, convert the prefixes or label the estimate as approximate rather than presenting false precision.

Comparing a peak link rate with a file transfer

A network adapter, router or plan can show a link or service rate, while a download tool reports delivered file payload. These figures answer different measurement questions even when both use Mbps or MB/s.

A quick calculator method

You can calculate either direction with a basic calculator:

  • Mbps to MB/s: enter the Mbps value, press divide, enter 8.
  • MB/s to Mbps: enter the MB/s value, press multiply, enter 8.
  • Download time: first convert the rate to MB/s, then divide the file size in MB by that rate.

Keep the original units written beside every number while working. For example, writing 800 Mbps ÷ 8 = 100 MB/s is safer than writing only “100,” which can later be mistaken for Mbps.

When the distinction matters most

  • Choosing an internet plan: plan descriptions generally use Mbps, so convert the advertised figure before comparing it with the MB/s shown by a download.
  • Checking a large download: convert the plan rate to MB/s to form a realistic starting estimate, then allow for conditions that reduce throughput.
  • Comparing storage or local transfers: drive and operating-system tools often report bytes per second, while network specifications may report bits per second.
  • Reading technical documentation: preserve capitalization and distinguish decimal prefixes from binary prefixes before drawing conclusions.

Bottom line for everyday use

Remember two rules: a byte is eight bits, and lowercase b is not uppercase B. Divide Mbps by eight to get the ideal decimal MB/s equivalent, multiply MB/s by eight to return to Mbps, and treat the result as a unit conversion rather than a promise about a particular download. Keeping prefixes and capitalization visible prevents nearly every common Mbps-versus-MB/s mistake.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mb the same as MB?

No. Mb normally means megabits, while MB means megabytes. Because one byte contains eight bits, the same decimal quantity expressed in megabytes has one-eighth the numerical value expressed in megabits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does 1 Gbps equal in MB/s?

Using decimal prefixes, 1 Gbps is 1,000 Mbps. Dividing by eight gives 125 MB/s as the ideal equivalent.

Why does my app show MiB/s instead of MB/s?

MiB/s uses mebibytes per second, a binary unit based on 1,048,576 bytes per MiB. It is not the same unit as decimal MB/s, so convert the prefixes explicitly when comparing values.
