Max vs. Netflix: which streaming service is right for your household?

Netflix has the cheaper entry tier, while Max undercuts Netflix on ad-free and premium plans and includes selected live sports. Compare catalogs, ads, streams, downloads, 4K, sharing rules and bundle limits before choosing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a US household choosing on price alone, Netflix is currently cheaper at the entry level: Netflix Standard with ads is $8.99 per month, compared with $9.99 per month for Max Basic with Ads. That $1 difference does not identify the better service. Max includes selected live sports on its Standard and Premium plans, while Netflix Premium offers 4K/HDR and spatial audio. The right choice depends on the programs and events your household watches, how many people stream at once, whether ads are acceptable, and whether anyone watches from another home.

The prices below are US dollars per month before applicable tax, shown on the providers’ official plan pages checked on October 13, 2026. Prices, catalogs, plan availability, billing arrangements, and sharing rules can change.

Max and Netflix at a glance

Neither service is a universal winner. Netflix is the lower-cost starting point and may suit a household focused on its original series, films, and games catalog. Max costs less than Netflix at the comparable ad-free and premium levels, and its Standard and Premium plans include selected live sports. A household that wants a particular show, team, or movie should check that title or event first; subscription prices do not make the catalogs interchangeable.

Current US plans and prices

The following table separates the advertised price from practical household limits. Max lists both monthly and annual prices; Netflix lists monthly prices in the cited US pricing guidance. All amounts are before tax.

Service and tier Price shown Simultaneous viewing Picture and audio Downloads and other limits
Max Basic with Ads $9.99/month; $99.99/year 2 devices Full HD 1080p Ads before and during shows and movies; no download allowance is shown for this tier
Max Standard $16.99/month; $169.99/year 2 devices Full HD 1080p Up to 30 downloads; selected live sports included
Max Premium $20.99/month; $209.99/year 4 devices 4K Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos where available Up to 100 downloads; selected live sports included
Netflix Standard with ads $8.99/month 2 devices 1080p Full HD Downloads on 2 supported devices at a time; some titles are unavailable on the ad plan
Netflix Standard $19.99/month 2 devices 1080p Full HD Downloads on 2 supported devices at a time; option to add 1 extra member where eligible
Netflix Premium $26.99/month 4 devices 4K Ultra HD, HDR, and spatial audio Downloads on 6 supported devices at a time; option for up to 2 extra members where eligible

Max’s annual prices work out to about $8.33 per month for Basic with Ads, $14.17 per month for Standard, and $17.50 per month for Premium when paid as a full year. Those are arithmetic equivalents of the listed annual totals, not separate advertised monthly plans. Netflix’s figures above are monthly, so do not assume an equivalent annual discount.

Which is cheaper, Max or Netflix?

Netflix is cheaper at the lowest advertised monthly level: $8.99 for Standard with ads versus $9.99 for Max Basic with Ads. At the ad-free level, Max Standard is $3 less per month than Netflix Standard ($16.99 versus $19.99). At the highest level, Max Premium is $6 less per month than Netflix Premium ($20.99 versus $26.99).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those differences are useful only after you compare equivalent needs. Max Basic with Ads and Netflix Standard with ads both permit two simultaneous devices and provide 1080p video, but their ad policies, catalogs, and download rules differ. Max Standard and Netflix Standard both allow two simultaneous streams and 1080p video, yet Max adds selected live sports while Netflix lists an extra-member option where eligible. The services do not offer identical programming, so a lower price is not a saving if the household still needs a second subscription for the shows it wants.

Start with the household watchlist

Build a short list before selecting a plan. Ask every regular viewer for two or three must-watch series, films, or franchises, then check each service’s current US catalog. This prevents a common mistake: choosing by a library-size claim that does not establish whether the specific titles your household wants are available.

Why title availability needs a date and location

Streaming rights vary by country and change over time. A title available in one market may be absent in another, and a show can leave a service after you subscribe. The prices and plan pages used for this comparison do not establish a current total title count or prove that any particular program is included. Verify the exact title immediately before paying.

When a single service may be enough

A single subscription is most economical when most viewers’ watchlists overlap on one service. If one person needs a program on Max and another routinely watches Netflix exclusives, compare the cost of alternating subscriptions by month rather than assuming both must run continuously. Keep a note of renewal dates so a paused service does not continue billing.

Which service has live sports?

Max states that Live Sports is included with its Standard and Premium plans. Its US plan guidance lists selected MLB, NHL, NBA, NCAA Men’s March Madness, U.S. Soccer, and premier cycling events. “Selected” is important: the list does not promise every game, every team, or comprehensive league coverage.

Check the exact event, team, date, and blackout or regional conditions before subscribing. A plan that includes selected games is not a replacement for a complete league package. Max also notes that live events can contain advertising even on plans otherwise described as ad-free, so sports viewing should be evaluated separately from on-demand ad policy.

The Netflix plan information used here emphasizes Netflix’s TV, film, and games catalog and does not establish an equivalent live-sports offering. Do not infer that Netflix includes a particular league or event without checking its current service information.

Ads and the real monthly cost

Max Basic with Ads

Max says ads play before and during shows and movies on Basic with Ads. Live events carry advertising regardless of tier. The plan is $9.99 per month or $99.99 for a year as listed on the US plan page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Netflix Standard with ads

Netflix’s ad-supported plan is $8.99 per month, but Netflix says some titles are unavailable on that plan. If a must-watch title is excluded, the nominally cheaper tier may not meet the household’s needs.

Ad-free does not mean every type of viewing is commercial-free

Choosing Max Standard, Max Premium, Netflix Standard, or Netflix Premium avoids the ordinary on-demand ad tier described for each service, but Max specifically says live events can still include ads. Treat on-demand and live-event advertising as separate questions.

How many devices can stream at once?

Both services’ lower and middle tiers in the listed plans allow two simultaneous devices, while both premium tiers allow four. This is a concurrency limit: it describes how many devices can watch at the same time. It does not by itself grant permission to share an account with people who live elsewhere.

Two-stream households

Two devices may be enough for a couple, a parent and child, or a household whose viewing is usually staggered. Max Basic with Ads, Max Standard, Netflix Standard with ads, and Netflix Standard all list two simultaneous devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Four-stream households

A household with several viewers watching at the same time may need Max Premium or Netflix Premium even if nobody cares about 4K. Upgrade for the concurrency requirement, not just for picture quality, and check whether the extra cost is worthwhile during the months when everyone watches simultaneously.

Do you need the premium plan for 4K?

For the plans listed here, yes: Max Premium is the Max tier that lists 4K Ultra HD, and Netflix Premium is the Netflix tier that lists 4K Ultra HD. Max Premium also lists Dolby Atmos where available; Netflix Premium lists HDR and spatial audio.

4K is not guaranteed for every title. Max qualifies 4K and Dolby Atmos by availability, and actual playback depends on the title, device, television, connection, and audio equipment. Netflix’s listed Premium features similarly require supported content and hardware. A premium subscription cannot make a 1080p title or an incompatible device display 4K.

Choose premium for more than resolution

Premium can be justified by four simultaneous viewers, a compatible 4K/HDR television, supported surround-sound equipment, or larger offline-download needs. If the household has a 1080p screen and usually watches one or two streams, a standard plan may deliver the practical experience it can use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Downloads for travel and unreliable internet

Max Standard lists up to 30 downloads and Max Premium up to 100. Max Basic with Ads does not show a download allowance in the cited plan table, so do not assume offline viewing is included.

Netflix lists downloads on two supported devices at a time for Standard with ads and Standard, and six supported devices at a time for Premium. Some Netflix titles are unavailable on the ad-supported plan, which can also affect what a traveler can save for offline viewing.

Download counts are allowances, not guarantees that every title can be saved indefinitely. Licensing, device support, expiration, and available storage can affect offline playback. Download a test episode before a trip instead of discovering a restriction at the airport.

Can my family share one account?

Streaming limits and household permissions are separate. Netflix defines a household as devices connected to the internet at the main residence where the service is watched and states that an account cannot be shared outside that household. Netflix’s official guidance says eligible Standard and Premium customers can add extra members in many countries, but eligibility can vary.

Max’s plan information says an Extra Member Add-On is available to subscribers billed directly by WarnerMedia. A subscription billed through a cable company, app store, bundle, or another provider may have different options. Confirm the billing route before assuming an extra-member feature is available.

A four-stream plan does not establish permission for four unrelated homes. If relatives live elsewhere, use the provider’s current extra-member terms or separate subscriptions rather than relying on the number of simultaneous devices.

Is the Disney+, Hulu, and Max bundle worth it?

Max documents a US bundle at $16.99 per month with ads or $29.99 per month without ads. The ad bundle includes Max Basic with Ads, Disney+ Basic, and Hulu with ads. The ad-free bundle includes Max Standard, Disney+ Premium, and Hulu without ads. Max Premium is not offered in this bundle, and Netflix is not included.

The bundle is worthwhile only when the household would genuinely use all three included services. Compare the bundle with the standalone plans you would otherwise keep, account for the bundle’s ad level, and check whether the included Max tier meets your stream, sports, download, and picture-quality needs. Someone who wants Max Premium’s 4K and 100-download allowance cannot obtain that tier through this bundle.

Choosing by household type

Price-first household

Start with Netflix Standard with ads at $8.99 per month. Move to another tier only if a missing title, ad restriction, download need, or sharing requirement makes the entry plan unsuitable. Max Basic with Ads costs $1 more monthly but may be the better fit if its catalog or selected sports are the reason for subscribing.

Sports-focused household

Compare Max Standard and Premium first because both include selected live sports. Verify the exact games and events your household follows; the listed sports categories do not promise complete coverage. Include the possibility of advertising during live events in your decision.

4K home-theater household

Compare Max Premium at $20.99 per month with Netflix Premium at $26.99. Max lists Dolby Atmos where available, while Netflix lists HDR and spatial audio. Confirm that your television, streaming device, network, sound system, and chosen titles support the formats before paying for them.

Large household with simultaneous viewing

Both premium plans list four simultaneous devices. Choose between them using the watchlist, sports needs, download allowance, and household rules rather than stream count alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequent traveler

Compare Max Standard’s 30-download allowance, Max Premium’s 100, Netflix Standard’s two supported download devices, and Netflix Premium’s six. Check the individual titles you plan to save, because ad-tier and licensing restrictions can matter more than the headline number.

Family spread across more than one home

Do not select a plan solely because it lists four streams. Review Netflix’s household definition and extra-member eligibility, and check Max’s billing-dependent Extra Member Add-On terms. A separate account or authorized add-on may be required.

Using an existing television or adding a streaming player

Both providers describe support for common streaming-device categories, including smart televisions, game consoles, phones, tablets, computers, and streaming players. If your current device already runs the app reliably, buying hardware adds cost without improving the subscription.

If the television cannot run either app, a generic streaming media player may solve the compatibility problem. Verify support for the exact model, operating-system version, remote-control requirements, 4K/HDR formats, and audio passthrough before purchase. The plan pages do not establish compatibility for a particular model, so avoid assuming that every device supports every tier feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical sign-up checklist

  1. Write the watchlist. Record the specific shows, films, games, and sports events each viewer expects to use.
  2. Check current US availability. Search both services for those exact titles and events on the day you subscribe.
  3. Count simultaneous viewers. Decide whether two streams are enough or whether four are required.
  4. Set the ad boundary. Decide whether on-demand ads are acceptable and remember that Max live events may carry ads on every tier.
  5. Check picture and sound equipment. Pay for 4K, HDR, Dolby Atmos, or spatial audio only when the television, audio system, device, and title support them.
  6. Estimate offline use. Compare the listed download allowances with the number of supported devices and the titles you need during travel.
  7. Review household access. Confirm where viewers live, which billing route is used, and whether an extra-member option is available.
  8. Compare the total subscription set. Include any second service or bundle needed to cover the watchlist, not just the first monthly price.
  9. Record renewal details. Save the billing date and annual-versus-monthly choice so an unwanted plan does not renew automatically.

Bottom line by decision

If your priority is… More likely starting point Why
Lowest advertised monthly entry price Netflix Standard with ads $8.99 per month, $1 less than Max Basic with Ads
Lower-priced ad-free or premium tier Max Max Standard is $3 less than Netflix Standard; Max Premium is $6 less than Netflix Premium
Selected live sports Max Standard or Premium Max lists selected sports with both tiers
4K plus HDR and spatial audio Netflix Premium Those formats are listed on Netflix’s Premium plan
4K plus Dolby Atmos where available Max Premium Those formats are listed on Max Premium
Disney+, Hulu, and Max together Max bundle Bundle pricing starts at $16.99 with ads or $29.99 without ads, subject to its tier limits

Choose the service that covers the household’s actual watchlist and access rules. Price is the starting filter; titles, sports rights, advertising, simultaneous viewing, downloads, device support, and household eligibility decide whether the subscription works in practice.
