One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchStart in the game’s graphics menu: lower texture quality, then reduce overall detail and resolution if the error persists. Close unnecessary applications, compare your graphics card’s memory with the game’s minimum requirement, and apply the game’s official driver-update or file-verification steps. These changes can relieve a real VRAM limit, but an “out of video memory” message does not by itself prove that your graphics card is under-specced.
What an “out of video memory” error means
Video memory (VRAM) is the fast memory attached to, or reserved for, a graphics processor. A game uses it for items such as textures, render targets and other graphics resources. When the game or driver cannot allocate another required resource, it may stop with an error such as “Out of video memory trying to allocate a rendering resource.” The same underlying pressure can appear as stuttering, pauses while assets load, frame drops or a crash. 505 Games identifies insufficient video memory as one possible cause of those symptoms.

The message is a diagnosis of a failed allocation, not a complete explanation of why it failed. The selected settings may require more memory than the card has, other applications may be consuming available resources, system memory may be constrained, or the game may need a software fix. Treat the error as a reason to reduce the game’s memory demand and check the game’s own requirements before deciding that new hardware is necessary.
Do these checks first
- Open the affected game’s graphics settings. Find the texture-quality control and any overall-detail or preset control. Lower texture quality first; it is the setting most directly tied to texture memory.
- Look for an in-game VRAM meter. If the game estimates memory for the options you selected, use it while changing settings. NVIDIA documents this type of meter in its Destiny 2 PC Graphics and Performance Guide.
- Lower resolution modestly. Epic Games lists a lower resolution as a remedy for Fortnite’s “Out of video memory trying to allocate a rendering resource” error. Reduce it one step, apply the change and test before making a larger compromise.
- Close programs you do not need. Quit browsers with many tabs, launchers, recording tools and other background applications before starting the game. Epic recommends closing other applications for the named Fortnite error, and Steam’s performance guidance explains that memory available for rendering affects performance.
- Check the game’s minimum graphics-memory requirement. Compare the requirement on the game’s current support or store page with the VRAM on your installed card. Requirements are game-specific and can change with updates.
- Follow the game’s official software steps. For the Fortnite allocation error, Epic also recommends updating graphics drivers and verifying game files. Use those as title-specific troubleshooting actions, not as a guarantee for every game that reports a memory problem.
After each change, run the same scene or area that previously failed. Changing one group of settings at a time tells you which adjustment helped and prevents unnecessary loss of image quality.

Lower texture quality before sacrificing everything else
Why textures consume VRAM
Textures are the image data wrapped around surfaces. Higher-quality textures use larger or more detailed texture maps, so they can occupy a substantial part of the graphics memory budget. NVIDIA’s explanation for Destiny 2 is explicit: its texture-quality option scales the mipmap resolution of nearby and distant textures to reduce VRAM requirements. With smaller mipmaps, an older GPU can keep the necessary textures in its limited memory instead of repeatedly loading and unloading data.
That mechanism is clearest in the cited Destiny 2 example; the exact saving and visual result vary by game. Do not assume that moving a slider from Ultra to High frees a fixed number of gigabytes in every title.
How to change it
- Open the game’s Settings, Options or Graphics menu.
- Find Texture Quality, Texture Resolution or an equivalent label.
- Move it down one level, apply the setting and restart the game only if the title asks you to.
- Check the game’s VRAM estimate, if available, and replay the location that caused the crash.
The trade-off is surface clarity: lettering, brick, fabric and distant materials may look softer. Texture quality usually changes detail more than geometry, so it is often a better first compromise than immediately dropping every setting to Low.
Reduce overall detail when textures alone are not enough
Some games expose a single Overall Quality, Graphics Preset or Detail Level control. Lowering that preset can change several memory-consuming options together. 505 Games specifically lists lowering texture quality among its optimization tips, while Microsoft’s Windows game-development guidance says lower detail settings should be configured when system physical memory is limited compared with video memory.
Use an overall preset when you need a quick, broad reduction or when the game does not expose individual controls. If the title lets you adjust settings separately, lower textures first and then reduce the detail options that affect the failed scene. Keep a note of the original preset so you can restore settings after testing.
- Benefit: several graphics demands may fall at once, which can bring an over-budget configuration back within the game’s estimate.
- Cost: the preset may reduce more than VRAM-heavy options, lowering visual quality or performance in ways you did not intend.
- Best use: a temporary diagnostic step, or a practical choice when the game offers no useful per-setting information.
Lower resolution if allocation still fails
Resolution controls how many pixels the game must render. Epic’s official guidance for Fortnite’s specified allocation error is to try lowering the resolution. A lower setting can reduce the memory and rendering demand of the frame, but it also makes the image less sharp or changes the displayed detail. The guidance does not prescribe a universal target, so make a modest change and evaluate the result in the affected title.

- Open the game’s Graphics or Display page.
- Choose a resolution below the current one while keeping the same display mode unless the game requires otherwise.
- Apply the setting and test the same workload that triggered the error.
- If the game remains stable, decide whether the image-quality loss is acceptable before lowering resolution again.
Resolution is not a substitute for checking textures. If a texture setting is pushing the card over its limit, lowering resolution alone may not address the largest allocation; use both controls when necessary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesClose applications that compete for memory
Close software you do not need while playing. Epic explicitly recommends closing other applications for the Fortnite error, and Steam’s general performance guidance advises stopping unnecessary applications because the memory available for graphics rendering affects game performance.
- Save work, then exit browsers, video editors and other large applications.
- Close duplicate game launchers or installers that are no longer needed.
- Stop optional recording, streaming or overlay tools temporarily if the game still fails.
- Launch the game again and test with only the essential launcher and system processes running.
This costs no image quality, so it is a low-risk step. It cannot make a card meet a game’s minimum VRAM requirement, however. If the game still fails with unnecessary programs closed, continue with settings and requirement checks rather than repeatedly closing the same applications.
Use the game’s own meter and requirements
VRAM meters are estimates, not universal guarantees
Some games show an estimated VRAM bar beside the graphics settings. NVIDIA describes such a meter for Destiny 2. Use it to compare configurations and to see whether a texture or detail change moves the estimate below the card’s available memory. The meter is useful for that game’s option set; it is not a universal cross-game measurement, and a configuration below the marker is not a promise that every scene will be stable.
Read the minimum requirement for the affected title
Find the game’s current minimum graphics requirement and compare its stated memory with the installed card. Epic specifically tells Fortnite players to make sure their video card has the minimum required memory. Check the requirement for the correct edition and current version: updates, high-resolution texture packs and different graphics modes can change what is needed.
If the card meets the requirement, continue with settings, background applications, drivers and file checks. If it does not, lower settings may still allow the game to run, but the hardware is outside the published baseline. A graphics-card upgrade becomes a reasonable consideration only after this comparison and the software checks; the error alone is not an automatic upgrade instruction.

Fortnite’s official troubleshooting path
For the exact Fortnite message “Out of video memory trying to allocate a rendering resource,” Epic Games lists a focused sequence:
- Confirm that the video card has at least the game’s minimum required memory.
- Try a lower resolution.
- Close other applications that are running.
- Update the graphics driver.
- Verify the game files using the launcher’s file-verification command.
These are official Fortnite steps. Other games may use different menu labels, launchers or repair procedures, so do not assume that Fortnite’s file-verification path or a particular driver setting exists elsewhere.
Update drivers and verify files when settings are not the whole problem
Graphics-driver update
Epic includes a graphics-driver update in its troubleshooting advice for the Fortnite allocation error. Use the driver package intended for your exact GPU and operating system, then restart the game and repeat the same test. A driver update is a software check; it does not increase the card’s physical VRAM.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Game-file verification
Epic also recommends verifying game files for that Fortnite error. The launcher compares the installed files with its expected version and replaces files that are missing or damaged. Follow the verification command supplied by the launcher for the affected game. Treat this as a title-specific repair step, not as proof that every allocation failure is caused by corruption.
Understand system RAM versus VRAM
VRAM and system physical memory are different resources, even though modern systems can sometimes share memory. Microsoft’s Windows game-development guidance warns that when a system has limited physical memory compared with the video card, most of that VRAM may not be effectively usable and lower detail settings should be configured.
This is why a card’s printed VRAM figure does not tell the whole story. If system memory is constrained, lower detail can be appropriate even when the GPU appears to have ample VRAM. Close unnecessary applications, as described above, and use the game’s own requirements and meters rather than assuming that a single memory number explains the failure.

Optional AMD driver setting: Surface Format Optimization
AMD describes Surface Format Optimization as a driver option that allows the driver to change rendering-surface formats where applicable and may lower video-memory use. It is a vendor-specific, optional adjustment. AMD’s description does not establish a guaranteed benefit for every game or graphics card, so treat it as a secondary experiment after the game’s own settings, application cleanup and official troubleshooting steps.
Recommended Free Tools
- Use it only on a system with a compatible AMD graphics driver and the corresponding control-panel option.
- Change one driver option at a time so you can identify any effect.
- Revert it if image artifacts, compatibility problems or no improvement appear.
Do not present this option as a universal fix, and do not expect it to substitute for meeting a game’s minimum memory requirement.
Choosing the least painful compromise
| Adjustment | How it can help | Typical cost | When to try it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Texture quality | Directly reduces texture-detail or mipmap memory demand; NVIDIA documents this relationship for Destiny 2. | Less surface sharpness and material detail. | First, especially when the game provides a VRAM meter. |
| Overall detail or preset | Reduces several graphics options together. | May lower more visual settings than necessary. | When individual controls are unavailable or a broad diagnostic reduction is needed. |
| Resolution | Reduces the rendered image demand; Epic recommends trying it for the named Fortnite error. | Softness, reduced displayed detail or a less suitable image on the monitor. | After or alongside texture reduction when allocation still fails. |
| Close applications | Leaves more system resources available for the game; recommended by Epic and Steam as general troubleshooting. | No direct image-quality loss. | Before deeper changes because it is quick and reversible. |
| Driver update or file verification | Addresses title-specific software or installation problems; Epic lists both for Fortnite’s error. | Download, installation or verification time; no added physical VRAM. | When settings and application cleanup do not resolve the error. |
| Surface Format Optimization | AMD says it may lower video-memory use where applicable. | Vendor-specific behavior and possible compatibility trade-offs. | Only as an optional, last-stage experiment on compatible AMD systems. |
| Graphics-card upgrade | Adds hardware capacity when the current card fails the game’s published requirement. | Largest cost; the right model depends on the game, system and market. | After checking requirements and exhausting reasonable software and settings changes. |

The game starts after lowering textures
Keep the lower texture level if the visual compromise is acceptable. If the game has a VRAM meter, raise one setting at a time until the estimate approaches the card’s available memory, then test the demanding scene again. Stop at the highest stable configuration rather than assuming the top preset is safe.
The game still crashes after lowering textures and resolution
Close unnecessary applications, confirm the minimum requirement, and perform the game-specific driver and file checks. If the card is below the published memory requirement, settings changes may not provide a reliable solution.

Performance becomes choppy instead of crashing
Stuttering and frame drops can also indicate insufficient video memory; 505 Games lists those symptoms alongside out-of-video-memory crashes. Lower texture or overall detail, watch the game’s meter if it has one, and retest the same scene. Do not infer a universal VRAM threshold from one title’s behavior.

The game reports the error even though the card meets the requirement
Meeting the minimum is not a guarantee for every combination of settings, update and background workload. Close other applications, lower textures and resolution, update the driver and verify files when the game’s support instructions call for those actions. Also check whether an optional high-resolution texture pack or a newer graphics mode is selected; compare the active configuration with the game’s stated baseline.
Only one game is affected
Use that game’s support page, graphics menu and launcher repair tools first. A title-specific error can result from its own settings or files even when another game runs normally. Do not apply a vendor control-panel change globally unless you understand its effect on other games.
When an upgrade is justified
Consider new graphics hardware when all of the following are true:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The installed card does not meet the affected game’s minimum graphics-memory requirement, or the game remains unusable at reasonable settings after the official checks.
- You have tested lower textures, lower detail and, where appropriate, lower resolution.
- Unnecessary applications are closed and the game’s driver and file-verification steps have been completed when the title recommends them.
- You have checked system-memory limits rather than judging the decision from the VRAM label alone.
No single replacement model is established by these troubleshooting sources. Choose according to the specific game’s requirement, your display resolution, the rest of the system and the hardware available in your market. A larger VRAM number can be useful, but it does not correct unrelated driver, file or system-memory problems.
A repeatable testing routine
- Record the current resolution, texture setting, overall preset and any VRAM-meter estimate.
- Close unnecessary applications and reproduce the failure once, so you know the baseline.
- Lower texture quality one step and test the same scene.
- If necessary, lower overall detail, then resolution, testing after each change.
- Apply the affected game’s official driver-update and file-verification instructions.
- Compare the card with the current minimum memory requirement and review system-memory constraints.
- Restore any setting that did not help, keeping only the smallest changes that deliver stable play.
This method separates a setting-related VRAM limit from a title-specific software problem and avoids treating a single error message as proof that every component must be replaced.
What not to assume
- There is no universal percentage of VRAM that lowering textures will save; the effect depends on the game and its assets.
- A lower resolution is not a guaranteed fix for every title. It is an official suggestion for the specified Fortnite error.
- Closing applications cannot make hardware that misses a published minimum requirement compliant.
- An in-game meter is an estimate tied to that game’s settings and rendering path, not a cross-game benchmark.
- AMD’s Surface Format Optimization is not a required or guaranteed setting for all systems.
- An out-of-memory message alone does not prove that buying a new graphics card is the only answer.
Bottom line
Reduce VRAM demand in this order: lower texture quality, lower overall detail, and then lower resolution; close unnecessary applications while testing. Use the game’s VRAM meter and minimum-memory requirement when available. For Fortnite’s named allocation error, also update the graphics driver and verify game files. If the card falls below the game’s requirement or still cannot run the title after those checks, additional VRAM may be warranted, but the correct upgrade depends on that game and the rest of your system.
