Matt Dines: Why a Rising Dollar Could Be Bullish for Bitcoin

Matt Dines says a rising dollar alongside Bitcoin may signal a shift in capital, but DXY’s relationship with Bitcoin changes across market cycles.

A stronger U.S. dollar is often seen as a headwind for Bitcoin, but Matt Dines reads one particular pattern differently: when the dollar and Bitcoin rise at the same time, he says it may signal a shift in capital toward a new, U.S.-centered financial system. That is Dines’s interpretation of a market signal—not an established economic rule or a reliable Bitcoin forecast.

Why does Dines see a rising dollar as bullish for Bitcoin?

In an October 12, 2026 report, TokenPost said Dines, chief investment officer of Build Asset Management, described “DXY up, Bitcoin up” as bullish within his framework. He interprets dollar strength as potentially reflecting capital moving out of an older offshore dollar system and toward a U.S.-centered financial sphere. If Bitcoin rises alongside the dollar, he sees that combination as consistent with a broader change in where capital is moving.

The key is the combination, not the dollar’s rise by itself. Dines’s reported thesis is that Bitcoin can respond positively to dollar strength in this particular setting. TokenPost also reported that he distinguished the situation from a full dollar squeeze. The account is secondary reporting of an October 12 interview with Bitcoin Magazine; the interview itself was not directly reviewed, so the thesis should not be expanded into a more detailed quotation or argument than the report supports. What does DXY measure?

The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) tracks the dollar against a basket of six currencies: the euro, British pound, Japanese yen, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona and Swiss franc. It is not a measure of the dollar against Bitcoin alone. A change in DXY describes the dollar’s value relative to that basket; it does not, by itself, explain why the dollar moved or what Bitcoin should do next.

  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Why might a stronger dollar be bad for Bitcoin?

The conventional counterpoint is that dollar strength can accompany tighter financial conditions. Investors may seek the dollar as a safe haven, or demand it when funding is constrained. Higher interest rates can also make cash and bonds more attractive relative to Bitcoin, which does not pay interest. In those conditions, liquidity may become less available for volatile assets, and risk aversion can weigh on Bitcoin.

These are possible mechanisms, not automatic consequences of a rising DXY. A dollar index alone cannot tell you whether a move reflects funding stress, demand for safety, interest-rate expectations or the capital shift Dines describes. Bitcoin’s price can also respond to other flows and market forces. Historical macro analysis has discussed dollar strength and liquidity as factors in Bitcoin markets, but it should not be treated as current evidence for Dines’s October 2026 signal. Has Bitcoin always moved opposite to the dollar?

No. The relationship has varied across time. A June 30, 2026 explainer from Leverage Shares describes Bitcoin and DXY moving together in 2016, 2019 and 2024, while showing a negative relationship in 2022. Its decade-long comparison uses a 26-week rolling correlation, which can change direction as market conditions change. The article does not provide numeric correlation readings in the text, so those examples show variation rather than a measurable forecasting rule. Read the Leverage Shares explainer.

That changing history is why “Bitcoin and the dollar are correlated” is too broad to be useful without a specified period. Even when both rise together, co-movement does not establish that dollar strength caused Bitcoin’s gain, or that the same pattern will persist. Leverage Shares is an issuer of leveraged Bitcoin exchange-traded products, a relevant context when weighing its market commentary.

How should you assess the signal?

Rather than treating DXY as a standalone buy or sell indicator, consider the two assets’ directions over the same period and what else is happening in markets:

  • Check whether both are actually rising in the same window. Dines’s reported signal is simultaneous strength, not simply a higher dollar index.
  • Look at the broader liquidity and risk backdrop. Tight funding, higher rates or flight-to-safety demand can create a different environment from a capital shift toward the U.S.-centered system Dines describes.
  • Keep the timeframe in view. Historical co-movement has changed across periods, including the contrast between 2022 and 2024.
  • Separate an interpretation from a forecast. The reported thesis offers a way to read one market combination; it does not establish that DXY predicts Bitcoin’s next move.

Where does Dines’s broader dollar view fit?

A separate What Bitcoin Did episode description presents Dines discussing dollar liquidity, the dollar system and Bitcoin’s place in a changing monetary system. It also characterizes that transition as potentially volatile and political. This is broader context for his outlook, not independent confirmation that a rising DXY is bullish for Bitcoin. The episode page displays “1 Jul” without a year, so its publication year is not established there. See the episode description.

What is the safest conclusion?

Dines’s reported reading is that simultaneous strength in DXY and Bitcoin may point to a capital-flow shift favorable to Bitcoin, rather than a conventional dollar squeeze. That is a market interpretation. The historical relationship changes direction, and the sources do not independently establish that the October 2026 signal has reliable predictive power. A rising dollar can be bullish, bearish or incidental for Bitcoin depending on the forces behind the move.
