Use ax.tick_params() on a Matplotlib Axes object to style tick marks, tick labels, and gridlines. It targets both axes and major ticks by default; set axis and which to narrow the change. Properties you omit stay as they are unless you pass reset=True.
How to customize ticks and tick labels in Matplotlib
Call tick_params() on the axes you want to style:
ax.tick_params(axis='x', which='both', labelsize=10)
This targets both major and minor ticks on the x-axis and sets their label size to 10 points. The example combines documented parameters; it is not a separate example from the API reference. Use axis='y' for the y-axis, or omit axis (or use axis='both') to affect both axes. The which argument accepts 'major', 'minor', or 'both'; its default is 'major'.

Choose which tick properties to change
The Matplotlib 3.11.2 API reference documents these styling options. Length, width, padding, and label rotation are in points or degrees as appropriate; labels and ticks are separate unless you use colors.

| Tick-mark appearance | direction, length, width, color |
Set whether marks point inward, outward, or both ways; adjust their length and width; and set their color. |
| Tick-label appearance | labelsize, labelcolor, labelfontfamily, pad, labelrotation, labelrotation_mode |
Set label size, color, font family, spacing from the axis, rotation in degrees, and rotation alignment mode. Modes are 'default', 'anchor', 'xtick', and 'ytick'. |
| Combined colors | colors |
Set tick-mark and tick-label colors together. Use color and labelcolor when they should differ. |
| Side visibility | bottom, top, left, right; labelbottom, labeltop, labelleft, labelright |
Control tick marks and tick labels independently on each side. |
| Drawing order | zorder |
Set the drawing order for ticks and labels. |
| Gridline appearance | grid_color, grid_alpha, grid_linewidth, grid_linestyle |
Set gridline color, transparency, width, and line style. |
These are appearance controls: tick_params() does not set the locations or values of ticks. The options and behavior described here follow the Matplotlib 3.11.2 API reference.

Use colors and gridline options
The official reference shows this call:
ax.tick_params(
direction='out', length=6, width=2, colors='r',
grid_color='r', grid_alpha=0.5
)
In that documented example, major ticks point outward, are 6 points long and 2 points wide, and use red for both marks and labels. Gridlines are red with 0.5 alpha. These are example settings, not universal style recommendations.
Preserve existing styles or reset them
By default, changing one property leaves other tick properties unchanged. For example, setting labelsize does not, by itself, reset a previously configured tick color. Pass reset=True when you want to reset tick parameters before applying the options in the call. The API reference summarizes the default: “Tick properties that are not explicitly set using the keyword arguments remain unchanged unless reset is True.”

Apply a change to the intended axis and tick group
- Use
axis='x'oraxis='y'to avoid changing the other axis; the default is'both'. - Use
which='major',which='minor', orwhich='both'to select the tick group; the default is'major'. - Set only the properties you mean to change if existing styling should remain intact. Add
reset=Trueif you intend to reset tick parameters first. - Choose
colorsfor one shared tick-and-label color, or usecolorandlabelcolorto style them separately.
