Material Maker is a Godot-based, open-source node-graph editor for building procedural PBR materials, and it also includes an experimental tool for painting textures directly on 3D models. Its graph workflow is the central feature; the painting capability is worth treating as an additional, less-established part of the application.
What is Material Maker?
Material Maker lets you create materials by connecting nodes that generate, transform, filter, or combine texture data. Rather than painting every surface detail by hand, you construct a graph whose output defines the material. The project is based on the Godot Engine. How does its node-graph workflow work?
Nodes are the building blocks of a material. A graph can combine basic operations into a more complex surface, and its outputs can describe multiple PBR channels. The official documentation names these channels:

The homepage advertises over 200 nodes. It also says users can create nodes either by grouping existing nodes or by describing them in GLSL. These are project claims about the available feature set; they are not an independent audit of node count or capability. The official homepage also describes a community library with hundreds of materials, nodes, brushes, and environments.
Can you paint textures on 3D models?
Yes. Material Maker supports painting on 3D models, and its documentation says the listed PBR channels can be painted there. Brushes use the same node-based approach as materials: nodes define the brush behavior, which can then be applied to a model.

The project calls its 3D painting tool experimental. That qualification matters if painting is the main reason you are considering the software: the official material establishes that the feature exists, but it does not establish that it is as mature or comprehensive as a dedicated 3D painting application. The official site describes the feature and its experimental status.

The official site links to releases on itch.io and Steam, and to the project documentation and GitHub source repository. The repository says files are MIT-licensed unless otherwise specified; that default should not be assumed to cover every community asset. Contributors can specify the license for their submissions.

The community site says you can import assets without an account, while sharing requires registration and login. Check the license attached to an individual community submission before reusing it. The community site’s usage information explains import, sharing, and contributor licensing.

Material Maker is a plausible fit if you want to build procedural materials through a visual node graph, experiment with custom nodes, or explore a community library of reusable assets. Its stated compatibility with Godot, Unity, and Unreal may also be useful when choosing an export target, though the official sources do not provide independent testing details.
If your priority is reliable, polished painting directly on 3D models, weigh the project’s experimental label carefully. Before adopting it for a production pipeline, verify that its current release supports your operating system, export needs, and project workflow through the official release and documentation links. The project’s GitHub repository describes the software and links to downloads and the user manual.

What should you check before using a community asset?
- Confirm the asset’s own license; the repository’s general MIT statement does not automatically apply to every shared submission.
- Check that the asset’s intended use and channels match your material or brush workflow.
- For production use, confirm that the asset works with your installed version and export target.
