To choose the right computer cable, identify the connector at both ends, decide whether you need power, data, video, or networking, then check that the cable and both devices support the required capability. A connector that fits does not prove that it supports a particular speed, power level, or display feature.
Start with the connection you need
- Inspect both ports. Match the connector shape at the computer and the device. For an adapter or dock, check every link in the chain, not only the plug that goes into the computer.
- Identify the job. Decide whether the connection must charge a device, transfer data, carry a display signal, or connect network equipment. Some connections do more than one of these, but do not assume they do.
- Check the specifications. Confirm the required power, data rate, display resolution and refresh rate, or other feature in the documentation for the cable and the connected devices.
- Match the weakest link. The cable cannot give a port or device a capability it does not support. Choose a cable that meets the system’s actual requirements rather than buying by connector shape alone.
Which USB-C cable do I need?
USB-C describes a connector ecosystem, not a single guaranteed level of charging power or data performance. USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) advises users to select a cable with the capabilities their USB setup needs, and notes that certification does not increase the capabilities of connected products. See USB-IF’s cable and connector guidance.

For USB-C-to-USB-C cable categories in its compliance program, USB-IF specifies a 60W or 240W power marking. Except for USB 2.0 High-Speed USB-C-to-USB-C cables, these cables must also carry an appropriate data-rate marking. For example, a 20Gbps/60W marking identifies support for 20Gbps data and 20V at 3A; that example is not a rating for every USB-C cable.
- For charging: Check the power the device needs and the cable’s stated power capability. A matching connector alone is not enough.
- For data transfer: Check the cable’s data-rate marking and the capabilities of both devices. A cable’s rating does not make a slower port faster.
- For charging and data together: Verify both capabilities rather than assuming a cable rated for one is suitable for the other.
USB-IF’s document library lists technical specification revisions, but a specification’s revision date is not a consumer-facing guarantee about a particular cable. Look at the individual cable’s markings and specifications.

How do I choose an HDMI cable?
Choose the HDMI cable class for the source device, display, resolution, refresh rate, and features you plan to use. HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc. says HDMI cable products are required to show their official cable name on the jacket, with the cable-name logo and/or applicable certification label on the package. Use the label to check that the product is the class you intend to buy. The official descriptions are listed in its HDMI cable guide.
| HDMI cable class | Officially described capability | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ultra96 HDMI | Up to 96Gbps; intended to support HDMI 2.2 features including uncompressed 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 240Hz, 4:4:4 chroma, at 10- or 12-bit color. | Confirm the whole system needs these features and check the required cable label. The guide says the label can be scanned to verify the cable model. |
| Ultra High Speed HDMI | Up to 48Gbps for system configurations up to 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 120Hz. | Match the class to the source and display requirements, and check the label-based verification guidance. |
| Premium High Speed HDMI | Certified for up to 18Gbps and features such as 4K at 60Hz, HDR, and BT.2020. | Look for HDMI Licensing Administrator’s Premium HDMI Cable Certification Label. |
| High Speed HDMI | Up to 10.2Gbps; supports 1080p and beyond, including 4K at 30Hz, 3D, and Deep Color. | Check that the system’s resolution, refresh rate, and features fit this class. |
| Standard HDMI | Intended for some earlier uses and tested for 1080i or 720p; the guide cautions that it does not support later resolution, refresh-rate, and bandwidth requirements. | Do not choose it for a system whose requirements exceed those earlier uses. |
These are class descriptions, not a reason to buy the highest-bandwidth cable for every setup. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s specification overview describes HDMI 2.2 support for full chroma formats including 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 240Hz, both at 4:4:4 and 10- or 12-bit color. The capabilities available to you still depend on the connected equipment as well as the cable.

Does “with Ethernet” make an HDMI cable a network cable?
No. HDMI Ethernet Channel is a data channel available in certain HDMI cable types, but it works only when both connected devices support HDMI Ethernet Channel. The label does not mean the cable provides ordinary network connectivity between arbitrary HDMI devices.
Will my USB-C port connect to a monitor?
Not necessarily. HDMI Alt Mode can let an HDMI-enabled source use a USB Type-C connector to send HDMI signals to an HDMI display without a protocol adapter or dongle. But manufacturers choose which HDMI features their USB-C products support. Plug fit does not establish video output, supported resolution, or feature compatibility.

Before buying a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or dock, check the computer’s specifications for display output over that specific port, then check the adapter or dock and display specifications for the resolution and features you need. HDMI Licensing Administrator explains the mode and its implementation-dependent support in its HDMI Alt Mode USB Type-C guide.

Connector matching is only a starting point for these connections too: the equipment and cable must support the capability you need. This guide does not establish Ethernet cable-category, run-length, shielding, or DisplayPort cable-certification recommendations, so it would be misleading to choose a category or certification tier here. Check the device makers’ specifications and applicable cable documentation for your setup.
