Crown shape and wear can help, but the surface pattern is the clearest first clue.
Compare the chewing surface first
| Clue | Mastodon molar | Mammoth molar |
|---|---|---|
| Chewing surface | Separate rounded or conical cusps, with valleys between them. | Numerous flattened enamel plates or loops, appearing as parallel ridges. |
| Side profile | Individual cusps rise from the surface. | Corrugated, washboard-like ridges run across the crown. |
| Crown form | Generally lower-crowned and rooted. | Generally higher-crowned, with numerous thin transverse enamel ridges. |
| Broad food-processing tendency | Crushing coarse plant material such as leaves and twigs. | Grinding plant material, especially grasses. |
The Smithsonian describes rows of three conical cusps on an upper mastodon molar. A Virginia Institute of Marine Science article quotes assistant professor Eric Hilton describing mastodon teeth as having “4 to 5 pairs of cusps along the upper surface,” compared with mammoths’ enamel ridges. Tooth position affects the pattern, so those counts are descriptions, not a universal rule for every tooth.

What the tooth shape suggests about feeding
The contrasting surfaces reflect different ways of processing plants. Separate cusps are suited to crushing coarser browse, including leaves and twigs; mammoths’ enamel plates form a broad grinding surface associated with grazing on grasses. These are broad feeding tendencies, not exclusive diets: neither animal should be described as eating only one type of plant.

How to inspect a possible fossil tooth
- Look at the chewing surface. Identify whether it has isolated peaks and valleys or many closely spaced enamel plates.
- Turn the tooth to the side. Check whether the crown looks individually cusped or corrugated by transverse ridges. Crown height and roots can support an identification, but they are secondary clues.
- Account for damage and wear. A worn, broken, or incomplete tooth may have lost the features needed for a confident visual match. Do not treat this quick comparison as definitive for every fragment.
- Get another set of eyes if needed. The University of Michigan repository recommends sending several photos with a ruler or coin when asking for help with a possible fossil find.
The University of Michigan repository also links 3D models of mastodon and mammoth teeth, which can help with comparing surface shapes: University of Michigan tooth models and identification tips. A cast or model is a learning aid, not proof that a found fossil is authentic.
