For most Samsung refrigerators sold in the U.S., Samsung recommends setting the refrigerator to 38°F and the freezer to -2°F. Samsung UK recommends +3°C for the refrigerator and -18°C for the freezer. These are manufacturer setpoints, not guarantees that every shelf is at that temperature; use your exact model’s manual and a thermometer to check actual conditions.
What temperature should you set a Samsung refrigerator to?
Samsung’s recommendations vary slightly by market. Its U.S. support guidance lists 38°F (about 3°C) for the refrigerator and -2°F (about -19°C) for the freezer as typical settings on most models. Samsung UK recommends +3°C and -18°C. Check your model’s manual for its controls and applicable guidance rather than assuming one setpoint applies to every Samsung refrigerator.

Samsung US attributes these food-storage thresholds to the USDA: keep refrigerated food below 40°F and frozen food below 0°F. These are safety thresholds, not the same as Samsung’s recommended control-panel settings. Samsung US explains its recommended settings and temperature checks; Samsung UK describes settings and controls for covered models.
How to change the temperature setting
The button sequence and available temperature steps depend on the model. On the common control types described by Samsung UK, the basic process is:

- Tap a control to wake the display if it is off.
- Select Fridge or Freezer so the compartment indicator flashes.
- Use the left/right controls to select the desired temperature or function.
- Wait about five seconds for the selection to confirm on the covered control types.
Some external-display models cycle through values when you press Fridge or Freezer. Twin Cooling panels may offer preset temperature steps. On certain panels, holding a compartment button activates Power Cool or Power Freeze. If the display or sequence differs, follow the manual for your exact model; Samsung UK advises checking the manual when a fridge-freezer display does not match its examples.
Using Power Freeze
Power Freeze is a temporary function, not a replacement for choosing the normal freezer setting. Samsung UK says it switches off automatically after 50 hours on the covered display types and uses additional power. Switch it off sooner when you no longer need it.

How to check the actual temperature
A panel setpoint is not an instant reading of every shelf. Samsung says the display represents an average and that temperatures vary by location: the back and bottom tend to be colder, while opening the door lets warm air in. A refrigerator/freezer thermometer is a practical way to check the conditions where food is stored.

- Freezer: Place it between frozen packages. Do not put the thermometer in water in the freezer; Samsung warns the glass could shatter.
- Timing: Keep the doors closed for up to eight hours before taking a reading.
If the refrigerator reading is warmer than 40°F or the freezer reading is warmer than 0°F, lower that compartment’s setting. Then allow 28 hours before checking again. Samsung says a refrigerator may take up to 28 hours to reach a new temperature, so repeated adjustments made too soon can make it harder to assess the result.

- INSTALLATION AND DIAGNOSIS – Disconnect refrigerator power before servicing. Inaccurate temperature readings or unstable cooling may also be caused by damaged wiring, fans, control boards or other components, so confirm the original sensor is faulty before replacement.
What to check if cooling is still poor
If the reading remains too warm or food is spoiling prematurely after the adjustment period, check basic conditions that can interfere with cooling:
- Make sure food is not blocking the interior air vents.
- Allow the appliance adequate clearance around it.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.
- Check that the doors close fully and the seals are in good condition.
- Look for an error code on the display; some codes may indicate the need for service.
These checks do not diagnose a specific fault. If cooling trouble persists or an error code appears, consult Samsung support or arrange service rather than continuing to change the setting.
