A smartwatch can handle music in two different ways. It can act as a remote control for music playing on your phone, or it can be the playback device itself, with music stored on the watch or streamed through an app installed on it. Which of these you can do depends on your watch model, its software, the phone it pairs with, and the apps and accounts you use. Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch handle these workflows differently, and Wear OS workout controls follow a third pattern. This guide explains each workflow, shows the platform-specific steps where the official documentation provides them, and tells you what to check before you follow any of them.
Two workflows that do different jobs
Before you open any menu, decide which job you need the watch to do. The two workflows have different requirements, and mixing them up is the most common reason music controls seem to be missing.

| Question | Remote control for phone audio | Watch as the playback device |
|---|---|---|
| Where the music is playing | On the paired phone | On the watch itself |
| What the watch does | Shows controls for playback and volume | Stores or streams the audio and plays it |
| Storage on the watch | Not needed for this workflow | Needed for stored music; Apple documents downloaded music for offline play |
| Internet on the watch | Not stated for this workflow in the sources reviewed | Apple says downloaded music plays without an internet connection; streaming requires one |
| Audio output | Wherever the phone sends it | Bluetooth headphones or speakers, or a watch speaker on supported models |
| Typical setup | Pair the watch and start playback on the phone | Transfer or download music, or install a music app on the watch |
Control music playing on your phone
In this workflow the phone does the playing. The watch shows the controls and, on supported models, lets you change tracks, pause, and adjust volume.

Apple’s support article “Control media playback on other devices using your Apple Watch” describes the Now Playing app as the control surface. The steps below follow that article’s workflow:

- Use the on-screen controls to play, pause, move between tracks, and adjust volume.
The same article also covers AirPlay, which lets you send playback to another device. Check that article for the exact steps on your model and software version, because Apple’s on-screen labels and layouts change between releases.
Samsung Galaxy Watch
Samsung’s Canadian support page “Play and control music on your Samsung watch” (last updated 11 August 2026) documents a controller for audio playing on the connected phone. When audio is playing on the phone, a music note or controller can appear on the watch. Menu names and whether the controller opens automatically both vary by watch generation, so if the controller does not appear, check the music settings on your specific watch rather than assuming a fault.
Wear OS workouts with Google Fit
Google Fit Help’s page “Control music with your watch while you workout” describes basic music controls on the workout control screen: next, previous, and pause. The page states that this feature requires Wear OS 2.40 or later. Treat it as a shortcut to three controls during a workout. It does not establish that every music app or every Wear OS watch behaves the same way.

Play music directly from the watch
In this workflow the watch is the source. You have two routes: music stored on the watch, or a music app installed on the watch. The route you use determines whether you need an internet connection.
Apple Watch
Apple’s support article “Play music on Apple Watch” describes two sources. You can play music stored on the watch, which is the only way to listen without an internet connection. You can also stream Apple Music if you have a subscription. Music must be downloaded to the watch before it plays offline.
To add music, use the Watch app on your iPhone. Apple’s article “Add music to Apple Watch” describes choosing playlists or albums to transfer. Because streaming needs internet access on the watch, a stored playlist is the better choice for runs or trips where you expect no connection.

Samsung Galaxy Watch
Samsung documents two methods. The first is transferring local music from your phone using the Galaxy Wearable app. The second is using a music app installed on the watch, such as Spotify.
- Open Galaxy Wearable on the phone that is paired with your watch.
- Select the music you want to send, using only file formats that Samsung’s “Play and control music on your Samsung watch” page lists as supported.
- Wait for the transfer to finish, then open the music player on the watch.
Files downloaded from streaming services are encrypted and cannot be exported this way. For streaming apps, install the app on the watch by following Samsung’s “Find, install, and use Spotify on your Samsung smart watch” page, which was published around May 2026 on Samsung’s US support site. Samsung states that some Spotify features may require a Premium account, and that feature availability depends on your watch model and account.

Output is where many people get stuck. The table below shows what each platform’s documentation says. Where a source is silent, the cell says so.

- Watch JIU
| Platform | Documented output options | Documented limits |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch | Paired Bluetooth headphones or speakers, and the Apple Watch speaker on supported models (Apple’s “Choose an audio destination on Apple Watch”) | Speaker playback is not supported on Series 9 or while the watch is charging |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch with Spotify | Output to the phone, or output to the watch, as set in the Spotify choices | On some models, watch output means a Bluetooth device connected to the watch; some compatible older watches can also use the watch speaker |
| Wear OS workout controls (Google Fit) | Not stated in the page reviewed | Requires Wear OS 2.40 or later for the cited controls |
If you want audio directly from the watch, Bluetooth headphones or earbuds are the practical option on watches without a usable speaker. Confirm pairing and output compatibility for your exact watch model before buying, because the support pages establish the category, not a specific product.
Check your setup before you follow any steps
Most failed attempts come from following instructions written for a different device. Before you start, confirm the following:
- Watch model and generation: Menu names, speaker support, and automatic controller launch differ across models. Samsung states that its controller behavior varies by watch generation.
- Phone and operating system: The Apple steps assume an iPhone with the Apple Watch paired; Samsung’s steps assume Galaxy Wearable on the phone; the Google Fit control requires Wear OS 2.40 or later.
- App and account: Streaming features and Spotify Premium requirements depend on the app and your account.
- Region: Support pages are published for specific countries. Samsung’s Canadian and US pages cover different versions of the same topics, so check the page for your country.
- Current software: Interface labels, app catalogs, and supported watch generations change. If a step does not match what you see, check the current official help page for your model.
What this guide does not cover
- Garmin watches and other smartwatch brands. The sources reviewed do not establish their music workflows, so do not apply the steps above to them.
- Models and software versions not named in the official pages. Their menus and features may differ.
- Specific streaming apps beyond the Spotify example. Each app has its own installation and account rules.
The practical rule is simple: start by identifying which workflow you need, then follow the instructions for your exact watch, phone, app, and account.
