Master Reddit Mod Tools: A Practical Guide for Subreddit Moderators

A practical guide to Reddit’s built-in moderation tools, from permissions and queues to Automoderator, Insights, and moderator onboarding.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reddit’s Mod Tools hub brings together the built-in features moderators use to manage access, review content, communicate with users, automate repeatable decisions, and check how the community is doing. A reliable workflow starts with clear permissions and rules, moves through the right review queue, and uses automation only where a consistent rule is appropriate. Tool names and steps vary between reddit.com, the mobile apps, and Old Reddit; use Reddit’s Mod Tools overview as the current map.

What mod tools does Reddit have?

The Mod Tools hub is the starting point for managing a subreddit. Reddit’s overview groups its native tools into content review, team and user management, community configuration, communication, automation, and reporting. The exact controls available can depend on the platform and your permissions.

  • Review and action: moderation queues and Mod Mode.
  • Communication: Mod Mail and saved responses.
  • People and access: moderator and approved-user management, plus restricted-user tools.
  • Community setup: rules, content settings, scheduled posts and events.
  • Automation and safety: Automoderator, safety filters, and other automation tools.
  • Review and accountability: Mod Insights and the Mod Log.

Use the official overview to locate a feature, then open its dedicated help page for platform-specific steps. Some actions may not be available in Old Reddit and may require reddit.com.

How should a moderation workflow start?

Set expectations and access first

Before assigning routine work, make sure the community rules are clear and that each moderator has permissions suited to their responsibilities. Permissions govern access to moderation capabilities; some enable actions on content or access to private community information. A practical least-privilege approach is to grant only what a teammate needs for their assigned work, revisit access when duties change, and confirm the prerequisites for any tool they will maintain.

Reddit’s moderator permissions guide maps permissions to tool access and recommends understanding what actions a permission enables. Labels and available controls may differ by interface, so verify the current settings rather than assuming every moderator role has identical access.

Choose the right review surface

When content needs attention, use the queue view that matches its state instead of treating every item as a report. The queue is where moderators can inspect items, gather context, and take action. For interface-specific guidance, see Reddit’s Moderation Queue help page.

How do you use Reddit’s moderation queue?

Reddit documents five queue views. Needs Review gathers items that need moderator attention, including reported content and posts or comments caught by filters. The other views help you look at content by report status, moderation outcome, edits, or whether it has been moderated.

Review context before acting

Open the item’s contextual panel to see the original content and its surrounding discussion. The user-profile panel provides moderation context and actions such as adding a mod note, sending Mod Mail, or banning, muting, or reporting a user. Apply the community rules to the content and its context; a high report count is a reason to review, not by itself a conclusion about what action is warranted.

When should you use saved responses, Mod Mail, and user-management tools?

Use saved responses for recurring explanations

Saved responses can make common moderator replies more consistent and reduce the need to rewrite the same explanation. Use them for messages that recur, such as explaining a rule or asking for a correction, and check that each response still fits the particular case before sending it.

Keep user conversations in Mod Mail

Mod Mail is the team’s communication channel for moderation-related conversations. It can be useful when a case needs a clear record or another moderator may need to pick it up. Reddit lists Mod Mail and saved responses among the tools in the Mod Tools overview.

Use user controls deliberately

Moderator and approved-user management, along with restricted-user tools, support different community access needs. Choose the control that fits the situation and the community’s rules; do not treat these controls as interchangeable. Team permissions are separately managed, so a moderator’s ability to use a particular control depends on their access.

How do you set up Automoderator—and what can it do?

Automoderator is Reddit’s rule-based tool for automating repetitive moderation tasks. Its configuration is maintained on the community wiki page config/automoderator. Depending on the rules you write, it can send Mod Mail alerts, post helpful replies, highlight comments, remove or flair posts based on a domain or keyword, filter content, and identify possible spam or low-quality contributions. Reddit’s Automoderator guide introduces the feature; the full specification covers configuration and rule behavior.

Choose whether a rule should act or ask for review

Automation can flag or filter an item for a person to review, or take a more direct action such as removing content. Match the action to the certainty and consequences of the rule: a narrow, predictable condition may suit an automatic action, while an ambiguous situation is safer to route for human review. Rule order and action behavior matter, so consult the full specification when building or changing rules.

Know the limits before relying on it

Automoderator does not process old content, delay actions, identify duplicate content, or react to karma, flair changes, or a redditor’s history. Reddit also notes that some enforcement actions may no longer be available in newly created communities or communities where Automoderator has not been used; for those cases, its guidance points moderators to Rules and Automation tools. Availability is a changeable product detail, so check the current Automoderator help page before designing a workflow around a specific action.

How should moderators use safety filters and other automation?

Safety filters and automation can help surface or handle content that matches defined conditions, but they are not substitutes for a clear policy or human judgment on edge cases. Use the controls in Mod Tools to match the community’s needs, and decide in advance which outcomes should be automatically enforced versus sent to a queue for review. When an item is filtered, inspect it in the appropriate queue and use the surrounding context before deciding what happens next.

Where do you find Reddit Mod Insights and the Mod Log?

Use Insights to understand activity and workload

Mod Insights has three documented areas: Activity, Team Health, and Reports and Removals. Activity covers traffic and membership growth; Team Health covers moderator activity; and Reports and Removals shows reported and removed content, including content handled by safety tools or administrators. See Reddit’s Mod Insights guide for the current access and interface details.

Use the Mod Log to examine actions

The Mod Tools overview says the Mod Log lists moderator or administrator actions taken in the community over the last 90 days. That makes it useful for checking what action occurred and when, while Insights provides broader views of activity and reports. The retention period is stated in Reddit’s overview and may change with the product.

How can you train new subreddit moderators?

Reddit’s Mod Guide and Training Queue are designed to explain moderator expectations, connect new moderators with their team, reinforce community rules, and provide a lower-stakes place to practice moderation. Setup and editing require config permissions. Reddit says these features are available on reddit.com and the iOS and Android apps; see the Mod Guide and Training Queue help page for current setup instructions.

Use onboarding to establish how your team interprets rules, when to escalate an uncertain case, and which actions a trainee should not take independently. A consistent guide helps new moderators learn the community’s actual practices rather than relying on assumptions about how another subreddit handles similar content.

How do platform differences affect the steps?

Reddit’s tools are documented across reddit.com, iOS and Android apps, and Old Reddit, but interfaces and feature availability are not identical. The moderation queue help page gives platform-specific directions, while the general Mod Tools overview notes that some actions may require reddit.com. Mod Mode has its own guide for moderation controls in the community interface: Reddit’s Mod Mode help page.

If a menu or control is missing, check that you have the relevant permission and consult Reddit Help for the platform you are using. Avoid relying on a click path from another interface as though it were universal.
