Function keys toggle drafting aids that affect cursor behavior. If the cursor seems to move or snap unexpectedly, check the relevant toggle before changing geometry or settings.

- Notice repetition. Identify the commands and actions you use repeatedly in an actual drawing task, such as drawing, copying, moving or trimming.
- Learn a small set first. Practice the command name or its alias, then add the shortcuts that fit your daily work. Autodesk’s workflow guidance recommends starting with shortcuts associated with the work you do most.
- Check the active drafting aids. Before troubleshooting cursor behavior, check whether Object Snap, Ortho, Polar Tracking, Object Snap Tracking or Dynamic Input is on.
- Customize cautiously. Change an alias only if the new mapping is easy to remember and does not conflict with your team’s established conventions.
- Verify against your release. Use the reference for your AutoCAD version and platform rather than treating a shortcut list as universal.
How do you customize AutoCAD command aliases?
Autodesk says aliases are managed through the Program Parameters (PGP) file. Its guidance recommends using the “User Defined Command Aliases” section instead of changing existing default aliases. The exact file location and editing workflow can depend on the release, so follow Autodesk’s instructions for your installed version before making changes.

For a personal setup, favor additions that are memorable and genuinely reduce repeated typing. In a shared office or project, keep aliases consistent with team conventions: a personal remapping can save keystrokes for you but make handoffs and onboarding less predictable.
Do AutoCAD commands and shortcuts work the same on every platform?
No. The command and shortcut references cited here cover AutoCAD 2025, while command availability can differ between AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, Mac and AutoCAD Web. Autodesk’s AutoCAD Web commands and system variables reference explicitly notes that not all commands and system variables from desktop AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT are available in the web app. Check the documentation for the product and platform you use before adopting a workflow.

Why do some command lists change between AutoCAD releases?
Autodesk updates commands and system variables over time, so a release-specific change should not be treated as a timeless shortcut or feature. For example, the AutoCAD 2025 updated-command reference reports that MLEADER gained a Layer option in AutoCAD 2025.1 and that GRAPHICSCONFIG received an Accelerated Font Display control. The AutoCAD 2025 new-command reference identifies MLEADERLAYER among new system variables. Consult the reference for your release when a command or setting is missing or behaves differently.
