The biggest difference is multiplayer: the original Mass Effect 3 includes its co-op mode, while Mass Effect Legendary Edition does not. So the choice is not simply between two versions of the same standalone game. Legendary Edition is the broad single-player package; the original is the version to consider if ME3 multiplayer is your priority.

What content and DLC do you get?
Legendary Edition collects the trilogy
EA describes Legendary Edition as including the single-player base content and more than 40 DLC packs spanning ME1, ME2, and ME3, including promotional weapons, armor, and other packs. The count applies to the whole collection, not ME3 alone. It is a convenient one-package route through the trilogy’s single-player content.
The original ME3 is not necessarily DLC-free
Legendary Edition is not the only way to get ME3 single-player DLC. BioWare’s 2013 ME3 anniversary post identifies From Ashes, Leviathan, Omega, Citadel, and Extended Cut as ME3 single-player DLC. EA’s current Mass Effect 3 (2012) product listing says that edition includes previously released DLC. The key distinction is scope: the original is a standalone ME3 listing, while Legendary Edition bundles the trilogy and its DLC.

What happened to ME3 multiplayer and Galactic Readiness?
Multiplayer is in the original, not the collection
The original PC manual documents multiplayer menus and public or private co-op matches, with options such as quick match, creating a match, character selection, leaderboards, and a reinforcements store. Legendary Edition does not include that mode. BioWare’s gameplay-calibration notes explain that Galactic Readiness no longer accounts for external multiplayer or the old ME3 companion app.
The documentation establishes that the original release included multiplayer; it does not establish that matchmaking servers are currently available on every platform. If you are buying the original mainly for online co-op, check service status for your platform before purchasing.

Readiness is handled differently in Legendary Edition
BioWare says Galactic Readiness is no longer affected by factors outside the collection, including multiplayer and the old companion app. It also cautions that fully preparing for the final fight is harder than it was in ME3 with the Extended Cut readiness rebalance. If you play only ME3, BioWare says you must complete nearly every available option to qualify for an ending without massive galactic losses; carrying choices forward from ME1 and ME2 is its most reliable route to stronger final-act results.

Is the ending different?
Legendary Edition does not simply replace the original ending with a new one. Extended Cut was released as ME3 DLC, and BioWare says it is the default finale in Legendary Edition. The meaningful edition difference for many players is therefore how that finale is presented by default and how readiness is calculated—not a wholly new ending unique to the collection.

How much better does Legendary Edition look and run?
EA’s 2021 launch announcement describes remastered character models and tens of thousands of textures across the trilogy, along with updated shaders, visual effects, lighting, dynamic shadows, volumetrics, depth of field, and pre-rendered cinematics. These are trilogy-wide presentation improvements, not a redesign of ME3’s campaign.
EA also lists collection-wide updates such as remixed or enhanced audio, hundreds of fixes for legacy bugs, native PC controller support, 21:9 display support, DirectX 11 compatibility, a unified launcher, shared subtitle and language settings, and integrated weapons and armor DLC progression. The most extensive gameplay overhaul in EA’s notes applies to the first Mass Effect; its Mako and combat changes should not be mistaken for ME3 changes.

Which version should you choose?
- Choose Legendary Edition if you want the complete single-player trilogy, bundled DLC, and updated presentation in one collection.
- Investigate the original ME3 if multiplayer is essential to you. Confirm that online services are available for your platform before buying for that reason.
