If the incident involves suspected fraud in the United States, you can also report it to the FTC or FBI. None of these reports guarantees that content will be removed or money recovered.
1. Save evidence before reporting the content
Record where the deepfake appeared and preserve enough information to identify the post and the people or accounts involved. Before flagging it or contacting the uploader, save:

- The post or media URL, the account or channel name, and its handle.
- The date you found it and, if visible, the date it was posted.
- Screenshots and, if lawful and safe to retain, a copy of the audio or video. Keep the original file where possible.
- Related messages, payment demands, phone numbers, email addresses, and links to payment or login pages.
Note when and where you found each item. The FBI advises people reporting crime involving synthetic content to retain incident information such as usernames, email addresses, websites or platform names, photos, and videos: FBI guidance on preserving information about synthetic content.
2. Report the post to the platform hosting it
Use the platform’s reporting route for privacy, impersonation, or synthetic media. These are separate from reporting a crime to authorities, and removal is not automatic: platforms apply their own policies and weigh the context of each case.

YouTube: privacy complaints for realistic synthetic content
YouTube lets someone ask for removal of content that has been altered or created with AI to look or sound like them. Its privacy complaint process considers factors including whether the content is synthetic, whether viewers are told, whether the person is uniquely identifiable, how realistic it is, and whether it is parody, satire, or in the public interest. YouTube may treat a voice as identifying information, but the complainant must be uniquely identifiable. See YouTube’s privacy complaint guidance for altered or synthetic content.
YouTube: impersonation reports for misleading channels
YouTube’s impersonation policy is a different route. It prohibits certain unauthorized impersonation, including using AI to copy someone’s voice or likeness in a way that falsely implies the person owns or authorizes a channel. You can report the channel or request removal under YouTube’s privacy guidelines. These are YouTube-specific procedures, not rules that apply to every platform. See YouTube’s impersonation policy.

3. Verify suspicious requests before acting
If the cloned voice asks for money, passwords, verification codes, or personal information, do not comply until you have independently confirmed the request. Call the person using a number you already know is theirs, or verify through a previously confirmed channel. If they cannot be reached, contact a trusted mutual person. Do not use phone numbers or links supplied in the suspicious message.

The FBI likewise advises independently checking contact details, avoiding transfers to unverified people, and enabling multifactor authentication. Its guidance notes that a cloned voice can sound very convincing, so listening for unusual tone or word choice is not a reliable substitute for verification. If you may have shared a password or code
Go directly to the affected service’s official website or app using a route you trust, and follow its account recovery or security process. Change compromised credentials and turn on multifactor authentication where available. Do not follow login links sent by the suspicious contact; the FBI warns that malicious links and social engineering can be used to capture credentials and authentication codes.
4. Report suspected fraud or crime in the United States
Reporting routes have different purposes and can be used together. A platform report addresses the hosted content; an FTC report records a suspected consumer scam; and an FBI report can provide information about suspected internet-enabled crime.

- Suspected scam: Submit a report to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Suspected internet-enabled crime: File a report with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3. The FBI also lists contact options for local field offices.
Include the identifiers and communications you preserved, such as usernames, email addresses, platform names, media, and payment requests. An agency report does not itself ensure removal or recovery of money. These reporting options are U.S.-oriented; procedures and legal rights vary by location and circumstances. The FBI says it may investigate when associated facts indicate potential federal criminal violations, while some synthetic media may be protected expression.

5. Treat deepfake detectors as clues, not proof
Automated voice-clone detection is imperfect. In an April 2024 analysis, the FTC described a range of effectiveness among real-time detection approaches and cautioned that methods for evaluating existing audio may become less effective as cloning evolves. It concluded there is no single solution or “silver bullet” for preventing voice-cloning harms. A detector result should therefore support—not replace—careful verification and the evidence you preserve. See the FTC’s analysis of the voice-cloning challenge.
