Tōkon also puts an original Marvel story and manga-inspired motion-comic presentation at the center; Infinite’s defining battle choice is selecting one of six Infinity Stones. For older arcade-style play, the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection is a bundle of seven separate games, not another single-format rival.
How do the team formats differ?
| Game | Format | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls | 4v4 tag team fighter | Players assemble a team of four Marvel characters. Producer Takeshi Yamanaka calls it the “ultimate 4v4 tag team fighter.” PlayStation’s announcement confirms the format. |
| Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite | 2v2 partner battles | Each team pairs characters from the Marvel and Capcom universes. PlayStation’s 2017 launch post describes the two-character battles. |
| Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection | Seven separate arcade games | There is no single collection-wide team format. Rules and mechanics depend on the game selected; see Capcom’s collection manual. |
The larger team is Tōkon’s most immediately visible difference, but it does not by itself establish that the game is harder, easier, deeper, or more competitive than the others.

Does Tōkon require learning four characters?
Not necessarily, according to its producer. Yamanaka says that while team fighters generally ask players to learn multiple characters, “you only need to master one character in order to play the game.” That is the developer’s stated design goal, not an independent measure of difficulty or proof that one-character play is optimal. Read the producer interview on PlayStation Blog.

Tōkon: a Marvel story built for this game
Tōkon uses Marvel characters in a game-specific story rather than crossing them over with another publisher’s roster. Its Episode Mode follows a new threat and the reassembled X-Men. PlayStation describes the presentation as motion comics centered on manga illustrations, with full voice acting in ten languages. The scenario was written with a writer from Marvel comics. PlayStation’s announcement also notes PS5 Tempest 3D AudioTech support.

- Face off against a friend locally or join the fray with up to 64 players in the online lobby, including standard VS modes. Plus, dive deep on each team with the single player Episode Mode to learn more about team dynamics and lore.
Infinite: a Marvel and Capcom crossover
Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite brings characters from both universes together in a cinematic story about their merged worlds. Its 2017 launch materials described a roster of 30 characters at launch; that is a historical launch count, not a statement about present availability or any later roster state. PlayStation’s launch post gives that count and story premise.
The collection: arcade games rather than one new campaign
The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection packages seven older arcade titles, including X-Men vs. Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom 2. It is oriented around playing those individual games and adds collection features such as online matches, lobbies, co-op, spectating, and rollback netcode, as described on the PlayStation product page. It should not be treated as one unified game with one story or shared combat rules.

What are the signature mechanics?
Tōkon emphasizes four-character team combat
The official announcement establishes the 4v4 tag-team structure. It does not provide enough detail to responsibly list a full set of combat systems or compare their competitive depth, so more specific mechanics should not be inferred from the format alone.
Infinite makes the Infinity Stones a battle choice
Infinite lets players select one of six stones—Power, Time, Space, Reality, Mind, or Soul. Each has unique powers that can affect a fight, according to Capcom’s feature description and PlayStation’s launch coverage.

Collection mechanics vary by title
The collection does not impose one signature mechanic across all seven games. For example, Capcom’s manual describes an Infinity Gauge and Infinity Gems with distinct effects—including movement speed, armor, projectiles, and healing—in Marvel Super Heroes. Those are specific to that game and are not the same system as Infinite’s selectable stones.
How many characters are in Tōkon?
PlayStation’s official game page lists 20 playable characters at launch. That is separate from the open-beta roster: the July 2026 beta guide initially listed 15 playable characters, then its July 23 update added Green Goblin to the beta lineup. Beta availability should not be mistaken for the launch roster. See the official Tōkon game page and the open-beta guide.
