Start with Startup Battle’s Basics, learn the Light, Medium, and Heavy buttons, and get comfortable guarding before you add counters and teammate assists. You do not need to master every system at once: a few repeatable inputs in Training Mode are a better first goal than chasing an “optimal” combo.

- Basics teaches fundamentals with one character.
- Assemble introduces team mechanics and cooperative actions.
If you already know fighting-game fundamentals, the official beginner guide says you can skip Basics and begin with Assemble. Otherwise, take Basics first so the attack and guard inputs feel familiar before team actions are added.

The official guide names Captain America, Ms. Marvel, and Wolverine as beginner-friendly, and says Iron Man and Spider-Man are relatively easy to learn. It describes Storm and Danger as more advanced. A favorite is also a good place to begin; expand your roster as you get comfortable.

What do the attack buttons and combo notation mean?
The official guide uses PlayStation button notation: Light is □, Medium is △, and Heavy is ○. An arrow between buttons means press them in sequence. Its starter Link Attack examples are:
- L→L→L→L: chains into a Skill and can trigger a Break.
- M→M→M: leads into a powerful Super Skill.
- H→H→H: leads into an Ultimate Skill.
These are introductory examples, not guaranteed best strings for every situation. First focus on entering one sequence cleanly and recognizing what follows it. If you play on PC, use the button prompts or bindings shown in your game rather than assuming the PlayStation symbols map directly to your keyboard or controller.

Quick Skills or Command Inputs?
Quick Skills execute a skill with one button press, while Command Inputs use traditional motion inputs. PlayStation says Command Inputs provide slightly higher damage and generate more Skill Gauge; it does not publish a numerical difference in the cited beginner material. Quick Skills are a reasonable way to learn the flow of a match, then you can experiment with motions when ready. The Quick Skill button can be customized in settings.

Learn ordinary guard first: hold ← to guard standing, or ↙ to guard crouching. The two featured actions also use □+×, but the timing and state are different, so practice them separately.

- Assemble Counter: press □+× while not guarding. Your character backsteps and automatically counterattacks if the opponent attacks during the maneuver.
- Crossover: press □+× while guarding. A teammate comes in to interrupt and create an opening.
These are distinct situations, not interchangeable versions of the same input. Get used to holding guard before trying to choose between them under pressure.
How do you bring teammates into a fight?
MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a 4v4 tag-team fighter, so team actions are part of the basic flow. Begin with one assist rather than trying to learn every team technique together.

- Use a direction with L2 to switch characters: neutral or → selects the second teammate, ↓ the third, and ← the fourth.
- After an assist, watch for the “Switch?” prompt. It signals a brief opportunity to press L2 and switch.
The official beginner guide recommends getting comfortable with assists before attempting assist-to-switch techniques. For team selection, one suggested approach is to pair close-range and long-range specialists, but the guide also encourages experimenting with characters you enjoy.
How can you practice without match pressure?
Training Mode is designed for repeating inputs and combinations. PlayStation says it lets you practice simple inputs and combos, create custom bots, and adjust CPU settings.

- Run Startup Battle Basics and practice Light, Medium, Heavy, standing guard, and crouching guard.
- Repeat one Link Attack until its timing feels familiar; treat it as an exercise, not a complete game plan.
- Practice guard, then Assemble Counter while not guarding, then Crossover while guarding.
- Add one Assemble Assist. Once that input is reliable, look for the “Switch?” prompt and practice the L2 follow-up.
- Move to Training Mode to repeat the sequence, set up a sparring bot, and adjust CPU settings.

Can you use an arcade stick or leverless controller?
PlayStation’s US FAQ says any PS5-compatible arcade stick or leverless controller can be used. It also says button inputs can be customized from Character Select or the mid-match Pause Menu. This guidance is specific to PS5; it does not establish compatibility for a particular peripheral on PC. An arcade stick or leverless controller is an option if you prefer that input style, not a requirement.
