If Marvel Rivals closes with “Fatal Error: D3D Device Lost,” first repair the game files, then install the current graphics driver from your GPU maker. Check that your PC meets the game’s DirectX 12 requirements, and if the crash continues, enable Marvel Rivals’ GPU Debug Mode to collect information for support. The message indicates a graphics-device availability or reset problem; by itself, it does not prove your GPU is defective.
What “D3D Device Lost” means
Direct3D reports a device-lost condition when a graphics adapter becomes unavailable—for example, after a driver update, a switch between power-saving and performance adapters, or a graphics device that stops responding and is reset. That is Microsoft’s general explanation of the graphics API, not a diagnosis of the cause in Marvel Rivals. Microsoft’s device-lost documentation describes the condition; it does not identify one universal fix for this game.

Marvel Rivals’ official support guidance addresses repeated crashes and GPU crashes broadly, but does not establish a single cause or guaranteed fix for this exact error. A driver, game-client files, adapter selection, or a device reset may be relevant avenues to check; the error alone cannot distinguish among them.

Fix the crash in a sensible order
1. Confirm your PC meets the published requirements
The game’s published PC baseline is Windows 10 64-bit, version 1909 or later; DirectX 12; 16 GB RAM; and a graphics card at least as capable as the listed NVIDIA GTX 1060, AMD RX 580, or Intel Arc A380. Recommended GPU examples are NVIDIA RTX 2060 (Super), AMD RX 5700-XT, and Intel Arc A750. These are Marvel Rivals’ published requirements, not a guarantee that a system meeting them will be crash-free. See the official Marvel Rivals PC requirements and release FAQ.

- Hawk Fan
- Server-grade Thermal Conductive Gel
- RGB Lighting
If your PC has more than one graphics adapter, check that the game is using the intended performance adapter. Microsoft lists adapter changes as one general circumstance in which a device can become unavailable; this is a diagnostic check, not proof that adapter selection caused your crash.
2. Repair the game client
Marvel Rivals’ FAQ recommends checking and repairing the game’s integrity as an initial step for repeated crashes. Use the integrity-check and repair option in the launcher where you installed the game, then try launching it again. The exact menu labels can vary by launcher version. Follow the publisher’s official crash FAQ for its current repair instructions.

3. Reinstall the current graphics driver
The official FAQ recommends reinstalling the latest driver for your GPU using clean installation mode. Download the current driver from the appropriate manufacturer—not a third-party driver-updater utility—and use the vendor’s clean-install option if offered:

That was a dated recommendation, not a current version target; use the latest compatible driver offered by your GPU maker instead. The game publisher’s FAQ also recommends reinstalling the latest GPU driver.

- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure

4. Enable Marvel Rivals GPU Debug Mode if the crash persists
The publisher’s GPU Debug Mode collects crash information to help diagnose game crashes, but performance may be affected while the mode is enabled. Turn it on using the current steps in the official GPU Debug Mode guide. If the error recurs, follow the publisher’s information-collection instructions and send the requested details to game support.
5. Check the targeted secondary options
- Antivirus whitelist: The game FAQ says antivirus software may misjudge the game process and recommends adding the named game executable and game path to the software’s whitelist. Make this a targeted exception only if appropriate; do not routinely disable security protection altogether.
- NVIDIA shader cache: The official GPU Debug Mode guidance describes clearing the shader cache for NVIDIA systems. Use the publisher’s current instructions if you try this step.
6. Check for game updates and report a recurring crash
NetEase announced in August 2025 that a client hotfix reduced the likelihood of some reported freezes and GPU crashes, and advised players with similar continuing problems to contact support. That dated notice is useful context, but it does not show that every present-day crash is fixed or shares the same cause. Keep the client updated and contact Marvel Rivals support if the crash continues after the official troubleshooting steps.

What not to conclude from the error
- It does not, on its own, show that the graphics card is broken or needs replacement.
- The available official guidance does not establish that one overlay, temperature, clock setting, Windows option, or other single factor causes this exact Marvel Rivals message.
- The sources do not support buying a GPU, power supply, cable, cooling accessory, paid driver updater, or PC-cleaning utility as a remedy for this symptom.
