Best Drill Bits for Stainless Steel Access Panels: Choose by Hole Size

For a larger hole in a thin stainless steel access panel, a cobalt HSS step drill is a strong choice—if the panel thickness and target diameter fall within the bit’s limits. For a smaller, exact-diameter hole, use a cobalt HSS twist drill; for a substantially larger opening, consider a bi-metal hole saw. Check the panel’s thickness and required hole size before choosing, then drill slowly with steady pressure and cutting oil.

Which bit suits your access panel?

Choose by the opening you need and the thickness of the sheet, rather than by a general claim that a bit is “for stainless.” These tools have different strengths:

Tool type Best-supported use What to check
Cobalt HSS step drill Several larger hole sizes in thin sheet Diameter range and step depth. Milwaukee recommends its cited set for material up to 14-gauge; confirm your panel is within that guidance. Milwaukee’s 3-piece set contains 1/8–1/2 in, 3/16–7/8 in, and 7/8–1-1/8 in bits.
M35 cobalt HSS twist drill A smaller, precise hole at one diameter Choose the required diameter and working length. Hilti lists its M35 bit for stainless steel; it contains 5% cobalt and has a 135-degree split point. Hilti’s specification describes the bit.
Bi-metal hole saw A larger opening in stainless sheet Match the saw’s capacity and cutting depth to the panel. Thürmer identifies bi-metal hole saws as an option for larger holes in stainless sheet. Its drilling FAQ distinguishes these from step drills and tools intended for thicker material.

The Milwaukee set’s 14-gauge recommendation is a manufacturer limit for the cited product, not a universal rule for all step drills. The manufacturer also claims up to 15 times the life in stainless steel for this product family; that is a product claim, not an independent comparative result. Its claim of over 1,000 holes applies to mild steel, not stainless. See Milwaukee’s product page.

How to drill stainless without overheating or work-hardening it

Stainless steel can work-harden if the bit rubs instead of cutting. Thürmer recommends a cobalt HSS-E drill with a 135-degree split point, low cutting speed, firm constant feed, and cutting oil. Keep the bit engaged in the cut; do not let it spin against the surface without removing material. Thürmer’s FAQ gives the underlying guidance.

  • Thick Web-helix Design: The BOSCH drill bit set features a thick web-helix design that provides additional stability in tough applications
  1. Secure and support the panel. Clamp it so it cannot shift or vibrate. Support the back where practical, especially for thin sheet, and keep hands clear of the cutting area.
  2. Mark and center the hole. Lay out the center carefully. A split-point twist bit or step drill can help start more accurately than a conventional point, but alignment still depends on a stable panel and controlled start.
  3. Use a low cutting speed and cutting oil. Set speed for the actual bit diameter, tool, and workpiece. Thürmer gives about 320 rpm for a 10 mm twist drill and about 200–400 rpm for a cobalt step drill as examples, not universal settings. Its stated cutting-speed range is 8–12 m/min; follow the bit maker’s guidance and adjust for your machine and conditions.
  4. Feed firmly and steadily. Apply consistent pressure so the cutting edges remove material. If the bit is rubbing, stop and correct the setup or feed rather than continuing to polish the stainless.
  5. Ease off at breakthrough. Reduce pressure as the bit exits so it is less likely to grab the sheet or enlarge and damage the opening.

When to choose a step drill, twist bit, or hole saw

Choose a step drill for a larger hole in thin sheet

A step drill makes graduated diameters and is suited to sheet and thin-walled material. Its practical limit is the depth of each step: confirm that the panel fits within the cutting depth and that the required diameter appears in the bit’s range. A step drill is not automatically the right choice for thicker material.

Choose a twist drill for a smaller, defined diameter

A cobalt HSS twist bit is a practical alternative when you need one specific smaller hole or a twist drill is more appropriate to the job. Hilti’s M35 example is specified for stainless and has a 135-degree split point. Select a diameter and working length that suit the panel and access behind it.

Choose a hole saw for a substantially larger opening

For a larger cut in sheet, a bi-metal hole saw may be more suitable than trying to make the opening with a large twist drill. Match its capacity and depth to the panel; the tool choice depends on the required opening and material thickness.

What the published product figures do—and do not—show

The available product specifications identify suitable tool types and manufacturer-recommended uses, but they do not establish an independent ranking of drill-bit brands or comparative performance on access panels. Treat claimed service life as the manufacturer’s claim, and do not transfer a figure for mild steel to stainless steel. The Milwaukee set’s stated 14-gauge recommendation is a useful selection check for that set, not a substitute for confirming your panel’s actual thickness and the bit’s step depth.
