Its roster includes familiar characters in alternate versions as well as less common figures and original interpretations, so the useful question is not simply who is on the roster: it is what each character’s star tier, powers, and board effects contribute to a team.
What makes the Marvel Puzzle Quest roster distinctive?
MPQ combines tile matching with character collection and team-building. The official game description says players can collect and upgrade characters, take on daily quests and Story Events, compete in Versus Tournaments, join alliances, and battle raid bosses. It describes a roster of “over 250” Marvel heroes and “over 20 million players worldwide,” but does not date either figure; treat both as undated publisher-reported claims rather than verified current totals.

The roster is not limited to one definitive version of each Marvel character. It includes alternate identities and interpretations—for example, Peggy Carter as Captain America, Samurai Wolverine, Spider-Ham, Devil Dinosaur, and Howard the Duck. The same character name may therefore appear with different in-game identities, star tiers, and abilities. The official page says new characters are added consistently, so roster size and availability can change.

How characters interact with the match-3 board
Matches connect the board to a character’s abilities. Matching three or more tiles deals damage, and basic colored tiles generate Action Points (AP) in the corresponding color. Characters spend AP to activate powers that can damage opponents, alter or create tiles, heal or support allies, or control an enemy. The official Gameplay Tips help center explains these player-facing mechanics; the official game page also describes manipulating the board and harnessing Iso-8.

Because powers are tied to colors, a character’s value to a particular team depends partly on which AP colors the team can collect and spend effectively. A character who creates or converts tiles may shape the board for another teammate, while a damage-focused power may turn accumulated AP into an attack. These are mechanical roles, not permanent rankings: the best fit depends on the other characters, the board, and the event.
How to read a character entry
Use the live roster entry as the authority for the character’s current version and ability details. The official Heroes roster displays each character’s star tier and powers, including their colors and AP costs. For instance, its listing for Power Man (Víctor Álvarez) shows a 5-star character with a Black power costing 10 AP. Roster abilities and numbers can change, so check the entry in game or on the live page rather than relying on an older guide.

- Identity or variant: Check the full in-game name, not just the familiar Marvel character name. A variant label distinguishes one interpretation from another.
- Star tier: The tier shown in the roster identifies the character’s category. Compare characters within their actual tiers rather than assuming two versions are interchangeable.
- Power color and AP cost: These tell you which resources a power requires and how it fits with the team’s color use.
- Board or team effect: Read what the ability actually does—damage, healing, tile creation or conversion, stun or airborne effects, or resource generation—before assigning it a role.
- Progression state: Covers, Shards, and Champion Levels affect how a rostered character develops; they are separate progression concepts, not synonyms for star tier.
As one historical example of design intent, Marvel’s America Chavez design interview describes a design focused on storing AP to deal damage. That illustrates how a character’s Marvel identity can be translated into a distinct game mechanic, but it should not be taken as a current balance assessment.
How covers, Shards, and Champion Levels affect progression
Character collection is only one part of roster development. Covers improve a character’s powers, while Champion Levels are another progression measure. Shards are a separate resource that can be applied toward recruitment, upgrading a power, or adding a Champion Level. The official Shards FAQ says Shards are available for 3-, 4-, and 5-star heroes, can be redeemed for any of that hero’s three powers, and do not expire.

That flexibility means Shards can help pursue a particular character or power rather than requiring every improvement to come from the same source. It does not mean every character is equally available at every moment: recruitment options and event access can vary. The FAQ also describes Hero Point purchase availability as rotating twice daily, but that information may be outdated; check the current in-game store rather than planning around a fixed rotation.
How to compare characters without relying on a tier list
A useful comparison starts with what the roster actually establishes, not a blanket claim that one character is always best. Compare the characters’ tiers and specific variants, then examine the powers and their interaction with your team.

The official game description encourages mixing characters into teams, while roster entries provide the concrete tiers and abilities to compare. Those sources support evaluating mechanics and fit; they do not establish a permanent “best characters” ranking. Event rules, character development, and changing abilities can all affect which choices make sense.

Use the official Heroes roster for current listed identities, tiers, powers, colors, and AP costs. Consult the official Gameplay Tips for mechanics such as tiles, events, and roster systems, and the Shards FAQ for Shard rules. Since new characters and updates can make older figures or availability details stale, use the live roster and in-game menus for decisions that depend on the current build.
