A marketplace API credential answers two different questions: identity is who or what is making a request, while scope or policy defines what that identity is allowed to do. Its lifetime—how it is issued, protected, rotated, and revoked—is a separate platform-specific rule. There is no universal “marketplace API key” or expiration schedule: Google Workspace OAuth scopes, AWS IAM policies, Amazon SP-API Login with Amazon (LWA) client secrets, and Walmart Marketplace access tokens work differently.
Identity, scope, and lifetime are different controls
Identity: who or what is acting?
A credential may represent an individual user, an application, a service identity, or an AWS IAM user or role. Do not assume that possession of a key proves which human is using it. Google Cloud’s Best practices for managing API keys notes that API authorization keys can obscure end-user identity in audit logs. AWS Marketplace Catalog API access, by contrast, is authorized through IAM users or roles.

For an integration, identify the principal that the platform records and the party responsible for the credential. Where supported, use distinct credentials for separate applications or workloads. That makes it easier to attribute activity and disable one integration without disrupting unrelated systems.

Authorization is expressed differently across platforms. Google Workspace Marketplace uses OAuth 2.0 scope URIs to describe access to data and functionality. AWS Marketplace Catalog API permissions are defined by IAM policies over actions and resources. A token’s possession or an application’s identity is not itself a reason to grant broad access.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Choose the narrowest permissions that let the integration perform its actual tasks. Broader access increases the possible impact if a credential is misused. Google’s Choose Google Workspace Marketplace API scopes recommends requesting only needed scopes; some public apps requesting scopes that access user data may need verification. AWS Marketplace’s Access control for the AWS Marketplace Catalog API describes custom policies as a way to control access more finely than broad managed policies.
Lifetime: how long does access remain usable?
Lifetime management covers more than an expiry date. It includes who can issue or replace a credential, how it is stored, whether old and new credentials overlap, how usage is reviewed, and how access is ended. These details depend on the provider and the credential subtype; a schedule for one product must not be applied to another.

- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-C, USB-A, & NFC): Designed for PCs, Macs, iPhones, and Android. For mobile use, simply unfold the key, align it with your phone’s NFC antenna, and hold for a few seconds to authenticate.
- Enhanced MFA (FIDO2 & TOTP/HOTP): Strengthen your security with flexible options. Use the Manager App to access TOTP/HOTP features for accounts that do not yet support FIDO2.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID. NFC is supported only through mobile authentication, Not MacOS/windows.
Marketplace credentials are not interchangeable
The phrase “marketplace API key” can refer to several distinct mechanisms. The examples below are from the named providers’ documentation, not a shared marketplace standard.

|---|---|---|
| Google Workspace Marketplace OAuth scopes | OAuth consent and declared scope URIs describe the app’s requested access to data and functionality. | No universal credential lifetime is established here; follow the applicable OAuth flow and current Google guidance. |
| AWS Marketplace Catalog API | IAM users or roles are the principals; IAM policies control API actions and resources. | Use the relevant IAM controls and your operational policy; no single expiration interval is stated for this mechanism. |
| AWS Marketplace API-based product integrations | Vendors may provide API keys or OAuth tokens for an integration; credentials should be separate from stable endpoint parameters. | AWS Marketplace says vendors should set expiration in line with their rotation policy. Its examples—90 days or one year—are examples, not universal requirements. Vendors should support invalidation or rotation, including after a customer unsubscribes. |
| Amazon SP-API LWA application client secret | This is an LWA application credential, not a generic marketplace API key. It is used as part of the SP-API authorization setup. | Amazon’s current Selling Partner API guidance accessed October 4, 2026 says to rotate client secrets every 180 days. After generating a replacement, the old credential expires seven days later. |
| Walmart Marketplace OAuth access token | The seller grants permissions through OAuth; Walmart’s Token Details endpoint reports the token’s granted scopes. | The Token Details endpoint reports the access token’s validity window. The duration is not stated here as a universal fixed interval. |

Set up a credential lifecycle that limits exposure
- Identify the principal. Determine whether requests act for an individual, application or service identity, or IAM role. Establish how actions will appear in audit logs and which team owns the credential.
- Grant only necessary access. Request the smallest workable set of OAuth scopes or IAM actions and resources. If the integration later needs additional permissions, use the provider’s supported process to obtain consent or update its policy rather than starting with broad access.
- Choose an appropriate lifetime. Follow the platform’s stated deadline where one exists. Otherwise, set expiration according to the provider’s controls and the team’s ability to replace credentials safely. Do not transplant Amazon’s 180-day LWA requirement or AWS Marketplace’s example periods to another credential type.
- Store and transmit the secret safely. Keep credentials in protected secret storage rather than source code, repositories, or client-side code. Do not put secrets in URL query parameters, where they may be copied into logs or other records. Use the provider’s recommended authentication flow and transmission method. Amazon Selling Partner API’s Safeguarding Sensitive Credentials provides guidance for its credential context.
- Monitor and review access. Watch for unexpected credential use, periodically review assigned permissions, and remove credentials that no longer serve an active integration. Monitoring matters even when an expiry date exists: expiration does not help if a compromised secret remains usable until then.
- Revoke when access is no longer needed. Remove access during offboarding or when an integration ends. AWS Marketplace vendor guidance specifically calls for invalidating credentials after a customer unsubscribes.
Rotate credentials without breaking dependent systems
Rotation is a controlled replacement, not simply the act of creating a new secret. Before changing a live credential, identify every application or service that consumes it and determine the platform’s overlap and expiry behavior. Amazon’s LWA process illustrates why: its current guidance says the old secret expires seven days after a replacement is generated, so dependent applications need to be updated and checked within that window.
- Check the platform’s rotation instructions. Confirm the credential type, required deadline, replacement steps, and whether the old credential remains valid temporarily. For SP-API LWA secrets, Amazon states a 180-day rotation requirement and a seven-day old-secret expiry after replacement.
- Create or request the replacement. Use the provider’s documented console or credential flow. Keep the new secret out of tickets, chat, source control, and other places that are not approved for secrets.
- Update consumers promptly. Roll out the replacement to each dependent application using protected configuration. Coordinate deployments if multiple services share a credential.
- Verify the new credential. Make a controlled request or use the provider’s status tools to confirm the updated integration works. Review logs for authentication failures and unexpected behavior.
- Retire the old credential. Revoke or allow it to expire according to the platform’s documented process. Confirm that no consumer still depends on it, and record the replacement date and owner.
If compromise is suspected, prioritize containment: revoke or invalidate the exposed credential using the provider’s supported controls, replace it, update dependent systems, and review activity for misuse. Do not wait for a scheduled rotation date.

What to verify before issuing or renewing a marketplace credential
- Credential type: Is this an API key, OAuth access or refresh token, LWA client secret, IAM principal, or another provider-specific credential?
- Principal and attribution: Which user, application, service, or role is represented, and what identity will logs show?
- Authorization: Which exact scopes, actions, and resources are required? Can access be narrowed further?
- Expiry and overlap: Is expiry fixed, configurable, or reported by an endpoint? What happens to the old credential after replacement?
- Storage and transmission: Are secrets kept in protected storage and sent through the platform’s recommended flow rather than embedded in client code or URLs?
- Operational ownership: Who monitors usage, performs rotation, handles suspected exposure, and revokes access at offboarding or subscription end?
