Its official description gives a useful outline of Marathon’s gameplay, but it does not establish Escape from Tarkov’s current rules. Bungie also describes a risk-and-reward cycle: a player can take developed equipment into a later run and risk that equipment there. The description establishes that risk, but does not spell out every condition for losing or retaining items, so it does not support a more exact account of death penalties.
Develop a Runner build between runs
Marathon’s build layer includes Runner shells, moddable weapons, body implants, and core system upgrades. Bungie says crews can coordinate shell strengths, suggesting that a team’s build choices can complement one another. The official description does not provide detailed item statistics or a complete breakdown of how each system affects combat.

Take on faction contracts and harder destinations
Contracts from six competing factions offer season-long progression. Bungie lists rewards such as Runner Shell upgrades, stronger starting loadouts, expanded vault space, and specialized wares. The official homepage is live and its details may change with seasons and updates, so these progression features should be checked there for the current state.

The same description points to more difficult zones leading toward the UESC Marathon in orbit. There, players face raid-like security measures and competing, fully equipped crews. This supports describing a higher-difficulty destination within Marathon; it does not establish a direct equivalent in Tarkov.
