The figure, reported by the operator on 5 October 2026, is an estimate for the combined work—not a final bill. The company says it will use its reserves rather than government funding.
How much will the Manxman repairs cost?
The Steam Packet’s 5 October 2026 update put the total cost of Manxman’s dry docking and repair work “in the region of £5m.” That estimate includes the extended time in dry dock as well as the repairs; it is not a confirmed final outturn. Read the operator’s update.

Why is the Manxman out of service?
During routine dry docking in July 2026, the company found wear on the liners of the ferry’s two propulsion shafts and on associated bearings. The components were removed and sent to MarineShaft A/S, a specialist engineering firm in Denmark. The operator said the repair work was complete by 5 October, but the components still had to return to Cammell Laird in Birkenhead for reassembly and recommissioning.

The company commissioned an independent report into what caused the wear. Its 5 October update did not establish a confirmed root cause, so the cause should not be treated as settled.

Will the £5m repair be paid for by the government?
No government funding was announced. The Steam Packet said it would meet the costs from its own reserves. It notified Treasury in July because the expected costs would exceed £2.5 million, the threshold at which shareholder consent is required. The company said that notification was not a request for funding and was not itself a precise cost estimate.
The operator said it would seek insurance or warranty recovery where appropriate. It had not confirmed whether any recovery would be secured or how much it might amount to.

When will the Manxman return?
The Steam Packet was targeting a return to service from the end of November 2026. That was a target in its 5 October update, not confirmation of a return date: reassembly and recommissioning at Cammell Laird, followed by sea trials, were still required.
While Manxman is out of service, schedules and vessel arrangements can change. The BBC reported that Ben-my-Chree was operating daily Douglas–Heysham passenger trips and that MV Arrow had returned to assist with freight; it also reported November sailing changes affecting Larne and Heysham. For current departures and changes, check the Steam Packet’s latest sailing information rather than relying on an earlier timetable. The company’s update also described the disruption as a matter of public responsibility: managing director Brian Thomson said, “We’re extremely conscious at all times of our position as both a publicly-owned entity and a vital link in the Isle of Man’s infrastructure.”
