ChatGPT Agent is no longer available. OpenAI’s Help Center directs users to ChatGPT Work for longer, multi-step tasks and to its cloud-browser documentation for supported browser workflows. The practical choice today is therefore Manus versus the current ChatGPT tools—not a direct comparison with a retired ChatGPT Agent mode. Manus is worth considering when you want agentic creation and workflows, including websites, slides, video, or authorized computer use. ChatGPT Work is positioned for research, analysis, connected apps and files, and finished work deliverables. Neither product is established as the universal winner.
What are you comparing?
“ChatGPT Agent” is a dated name for this comparison. OpenAI’s current Help Center says ChatGPT agent is no longer available. For longer multi-step work, OpenAI points users to ChatGPT Work; for supported browser tasks, it points to its cloud-browser instructions. OpenAI’s release notes record the Agent launch in 2025, but that history does not change the current retirement notice.

That leaves a more useful decision: choose between Manus and the current ChatGPT capabilities that fit your task. Their published feature descriptions overlap in some areas, but they do not establish equivalent computer access, identical workflows, or a performance winner.

Check the current app and plan for availability. Manus | ChatGPT Work is described as operating across connected apps and files; scheduled tasks can run once, recur, or monitor changes. Feature descriptions and links can change. The broad distinction is that Manus foregrounds autonomous creation and workflows, while ChatGPT Work foregrounds research, analysis, connected work materials, and business deliverables. That is a difference in product positioning, not proof that one performs better.
#1 Best Overall
Which should you choose for your task?
Choose Manus when the output or workflow is the main goal
Manus may be the better fit if you want an agent to produce a website, presentation, or video, or to run a workflow involving services it currently connects to. Its documentation distinguishes a Chat mode for quick questions and file recognition from Agent mode for more complex tasks; the Help Center says Chat conversations do not use credits, while Agent tasks do. Confirm current model access, allowances, and availability for your account before relying on a specific mode.
If the work must involve your computer, distinguish Manus’s documented options. Its March 24, 2026 help article describes My Computer as working primarily through command-line instructions, installed local tools, and folders you authorize. It also describes confirmation for sensitive commands and scoping permissions for risky operations. Manus’s September 28, 2026 Manus 2.0 announcement separately describes Computer Use in a visible, authorized workspace with approved files, browser, and apps. The newer announcement does not make the older command-line description interchangeable with every Computer Use workflow.

Choose ChatGPT Work when the work starts with information or existing work materials
ChatGPT Work is the more directly documented fit when you need longer research or analysis across connected apps and files, or want a document, spreadsheet, presentation, report, or Site. Its scheduled-task options may suit recurring or change-triggered work, if they are available in your plan and workspace.
Use the browser distinction to decide whether a task can run
ChatGPT’s desktop built-in browser is separate from the user’s Chrome profile. If a task depends on an already signed-in Chrome session, the built-in browser does not automatically inherit that state; OpenAI says some tasks may use its Codex Chrome extension. Browser features depend on plan and workspace settings. The guide says users review the website and that the product requests approval for new website use under its documented settings.
Rank #3
For either product, check the exact app connector, browser access, permissions, and approval steps for your account before delegating a consequential task. Do not infer from a general feature page that every service, file, site, or action is available to every user.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What do we know about performance, control, and price?
There is no supported head-to-head winner
The reviewed official material does not provide an independent, fair Manus-versus-ChatGPT performance comparison. Manus reports that one tested configuration of Cascade used 23.2% fewer tokens, 28.2% less time, and 32% lower run cost than its previous system. That is a vendor-reported comparison within Manus, not a test against ChatGPT or evidence about your tasks.
Control depends on the specific workflow
Manus describes authorization of folders and computer sessions, with confirmations and permission scoping noted in its local-computer help article. OpenAI documents a separate browser state, user review of websites, and approval requests under the browser guide’s settings. These are descriptions of particular controls, not a blanket security guarantee. Before allowing changes, verify what the agent can access and what actions require your approval.

Check current plan access and checkout price
Manus’s March 16, 2026 Help Center pricing article listed a free tier at $0 per month, Pro tiers starting at $20 or $40 per month with a seven-day trial, and Team from $20 per seat per month; it also described varying credits and task allowances and possible annual-billing discounts. The article says the price shown at checkout controls. These are dated figures, not a promise of current pricing.
Best Value
OpenAI’s agent retirement article and ChatGPT Work documentation describe plan access and rollout that may change. Check the live pages for region, workspace eligibility, quotas, and current availability before choosing. Compare the actual plan that includes your required features rather than assuming the dated Manus figures are directly comparable with an OpenAI plan.
Quick Recap
A practical way to make the choice
- Name the deliverable. Decide whether you need research, a finished business document, a website or media asset, a browser action, or a recurring workflow.
- Map the work location. Establish whether it needs cloud execution, a desktop browser, a signed-in browser profile, or access to local folders and tools.
- Verify integrations and permissions. Check that the exact connector or app is available to your plan, and inspect which files, sites, and actions the agent can reach.
- Check oversight needs. Identify actions that could send, publish, delete, purchase, or alter important information; confirm the product’s approval behavior for that workflow.
- Run a small representative task. Use a low-risk example with the same kind of files and apps you expect to use. Judge the result, time, corrections needed, and any usage consumed for your own situation.
- Confirm current availability and cost. Check region, plan, quotas or credits, workspace settings, and checkout price immediately before committing.
