Choose a manual if you want to operate the clutch and select gears yourself; choose an automatic if you prefer the car to handle routine shifting, with paddle-based gear selection available on equipped models. For a new U.S. 2026 Mustang, the EcoBoost is listed with a 10-speed automatic, while GT and Dark Horse offer manual and automatic configurations. Availability can change by model year, so confirm the exact configuration before you shop.
Which transmissions are available on each 2026 Mustang trim?
Ford’s U.S. 2026 Mustang materials show that transmission choice is not identical across the lineup. The current configuration listed for EcoBoost is automatic-only; GT and Dark Horse offer a manual and an available 10-speed automatic.

What does each transmission feel like to drive?
Manual: clutch and gear choice are yours
A manual asks you to coordinate the clutch and gear changes. That adds an active task to driving and gives you direct control over when to shift. It is the natural fit if working the clutch and selecting gears are part of the experience you want from a Mustang.
#1 Best Overall
- Functionality: This lower shift rubber boot with metal support plate delivers a tight seal around the manual shifter base. It blocks dust, moisture and debris from entering the transmission assembly, cuts down shifting noise, minimizes internal corrosion and component wear, and sustains smooth, consistent gear‑shifting performance
- Compatible With: 1979-2004 Ford Mustang Please make sure that this accessory is suitable for your vehicle
- OE Number: 3R3Z-7277-R 3R3Z7277R Please check the part numbers whether it suits your vehicle before purchasing
- Higher Quality:Made of high‑elasticity wear‑resistant rubber and sturdy metal support plate, this lower shifter boot resists aging, cracking and deformation, providing long‑lasting sealing performance under long‑term shifting friction
- Timely Replacement: Timely replacement of a worn lower‑shift rubber boot is critical to protecting your manual transmission system. Cracked, hardened or deteriorated rubber seals allow dust, moisture and debris to infiltrate the shifter assembly, causing internal corrosion, accelerated component wear and unpleasant shifting noise. Early replacement safeguards gear‑shift components and maintains smooth, consistent shifting performance
Ford’s 2025 technical sheet names the GT manual as a Getrag MT-82 and the Dark Horse manual as a Tremec TR-3160. Those hardware names are specific to the 2025 model-year configurations documented there; do not assume they apply unchanged to another year.
Automatic: routine shifts handled for you
An automatic handles ordinary gear changes, which can suit drivers who want to focus less on shifting or who regularly face stop-and-go traffic. Where equipped, SelectShift paddle controls let the driver request gear changes without turning the transmission into a manual.

- Replacement for 1964-1973, 1979-1995 Ford Mustang - See below Description for Specific Fitments
- Can be retrofit onto classic 65-73 Mustangs if converting to a 5.0/5.8 V8 and T5 transmission with late-model bellhousing
Ford’s 2026 Mustang Owner’s Manual says of SelectShift paddle use: “We recommend using this feature for engine braking or driving on hilly or mountainous roads.” That is guidance on using the feature, not a recommendation to choose an automatic over a manual.
How should you decide between them?
- Choose the trim and model year first. Check Ford’s 2026 Mustang configuration page or the 2026 order guide to verify which transmission can be ordered on that exact version.
- Think about the driving you enjoy. If operating a clutch and choosing each gear sounds rewarding, lean manual. If you would rather have the car shift in routine driving but want some gear-selection input, consider an automatic with SelectShift where equipped.
- Account for traffic and other drivers. Consider how often you drive in congestion and whether someone else will share the car and is comfortable with a manual. These are practical fit questions, not evidence that one transmission performs better.
- Compare performance claims only on equal terms. A meaningful comparison needs the same model year, engine, tires, package and test conditions. Ford’s published specifications cited here do not establish a general acceleration or track-performance winner.
- Compare ownership costs with specific evidence. Look for comparable fuel-economy, maintenance, repair, insurance and resale information for the exact versions you are considering rather than assuming one transmission is cheaper to own.
Do manual and automatic Mustangs differ in power or performance?
Ford’s 2026 Mustang page lists the EcoBoost’s 2.3-liter engine at 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque on 93-octane fuel, and the GT’s 5.0-liter V8 at 480 horsepower and 415 lb-ft on 93-octane fuel. Ford publishes higher GT figures when equipped with active exhaust. These are engine specifications, not a matched comparison of manual and automatic cars.

- Replaces Part Number: 8R3Z-7277-AA, 5R3Z-7213-BAA, 7R3Z-7277-AD, 6R3Z-7277-AA, 8R3Z7277AA, 5R3Z7213BAA, 7R3Z7277AD, 6R3Z7277AA
Ford’s 2025 technical sheet lists rev matching and no-lift-shift among the manual-transmission specifications. Those features describe the documented equipment; by themselves, they do not prove a particular driver will be faster or that the manual will outperform an automatic.
The official sources cited here do not provide a controlled, general manual-versus-automatic comparison for acceleration, fuel economy, reliability, repair expense, resale value or owner satisfaction. A fair answer on any of those questions depends on comparable evidence for the specific model year and configuration, not a blanket rule.

- Compatible with: Ford Mustang Series 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009
- Improve Comfort: After installation, it can improve the cleanliness and comfort of the interior space

What is the practical verdict?
Pick the manual if the clutch-and-shift experience is central to why you want a Mustang and your chosen trim offers it. Pick the automatic if you value effortless routine shifting, regularly encounter traffic, or want paddle-based gear input where available. If you are choosing an EcoBoost for the 2026 U.S. lineup, Ford currently lists it with an automatic; if you want a manual, compare the GT and Dark Horse configurations and verify current ordering details.
