Why Ford Still Offers a Manual Transmission in the Mustang

Ford still offers a manual Mustang because the transmission remains part of the car’s enthusiast-oriented appeal—and early orders for the 2024 Mustang showed meaningful interest in it. That is the strongest evidence-based explanation, not a published account of Ford’s internal business calculations. For the U.S. 2026 model year, Ford lists a six-speed manual on GT models and an optional TREMEC six-speed manual for the Dark Horse.

What Ford offers with the 2026 Mustang

Ford’s U.S. 2026 Mustang lineup keeps the manual available, but not in the same way on every performance trim. GT models are listed with a six-speed manual, while the Dark Horse’s TREMEC six-speed manual is optional. Ford’s 2026 update makes the Dark Horse’s 10-speed automatic standard and its TREMEC manual optional. Ford’s 2026 Mustang lineup and 2026 Dark Horse update describe those offerings; availability and equipment can vary by market and model year.

This selective packaging suggests Ford is preserving a manual choice for buyers who want one, rather than treating it as the default across the performance range. It does not, by itself, reveal Ford’s reason for setting the standard equipment that way.

Why keep it? Enthusiast appeal is the best-supported explanation

A manual transmission gives Mustang buyers a more hands-on driving option, a fit for a car with a strong enthusiast audience. Early demand data support the view that this audience is substantial enough to matter: The Associated Press reported on August 11, 2023, that more than a quarter of roughly 13,000 U.S. orders for the 2024 Mustang included the six-speed manual. Ford spokesperson Mike Levine provided the figure. The AP report described an early order snapshot, not final deliveries or a current take rate.

  • Ideal for Hobbyists: Perfect for model builders of all skill levels, from beginners to experienced collectors.
  • Display-Ready Models: Create a stunning Ford model that’s ready to showcase in your collection or as a standout display piece.

That figure helps explain why a manual may remain relevant to the Mustang’s enthusiast-facing offer, but it does not prove what motivated Ford’s decision. The number is specific to early orders for the 2024 model, not the 2026 lineup. It also should not be confused with the separate AP-reported finding that 67% of those roughly 13,000 orders included a V8.

Related context comes from Mustang brand manager Jim Owens, quoted by AP: “We tend to see more demand from enthusiasts for the V-8 whenever an all-new Mustang is introduced.” Owens was discussing V8 demand, not Ford’s manual-transmission policy, so the comment is context about Mustang enthusiasts rather than a direct explanation of the manual’s retention.

What Ford has—and has not—said about its decision

The available public material establishes that Ford continues to offer a manual on selected 2026 Mustang configurations and that early 2024 orders showed buyer interest. It does not provide a detailed explanation of the internal decision. The sources cited here do not establish the manual’s per-car profitability, engineering costs, emissions costs, or a minimum sales threshold for keeping it.

Accordingly, claims that Ford keeps the manual for a specific financial, regulatory, or production reason would go beyond what these sources show. Enthusiast appeal is a reasonable interpretation of the product choice and order data, not a confirmed statement of Ford’s internal rationale.

Manual or automatic: what buyers can weigh

The choice is personal as well as trim-dependent. A manual suits drivers who want to select gears themselves; an automatic may better suit someone prioritizing convenience, particularly in stop-and-go traffic. Check the configuration for the exact trim and model year, since transmission availability differs within the 2026 performance range.

There is also a specific convenience tradeoff: Ford says remote-start features are unavailable on vehicles with a manual transmission in its 2026 model-year update. The cited sources do not establish instrumented acceleration, lap-time, fuel-economy, reliability, or ownership-cost differences between the transmissions, so those should not be assumed from the availability information alone.

Bottom line on Ford’s manual Mustang

Ford’s continued manual offering is consistent with serving Mustang enthusiasts, and early orders for the 2024 model show that a meaningful group of buyers wanted the six-speed. The evidence supports that explanation as an inference—not a disclosed corporate rationale. In the U.S. 2026 lineup, buyers can find manuals on GT models and choose an optional TREMEC six-speed for the Dark Horse, where the automatic is standard.
