Managed services are an ongoing arrangement in which a provider operates a defined service or part of an organization’s technology environment. The arrangement can cover some or all of the work, but it does not automatically transfer every responsibility: the service description and responsibility matrix determine what the provider handles and what the customer retains.
What does a managed services provider do?
The work depends on the service and contract; there is no universal checklist. For example, AWS describes its Managed Services offering as ongoing management of AWS infrastructure across provisioning, operations, and support. Its listed activities include monitoring, change requests, patch management, security, and backup. IBM’s overview of managed cloud services describes possible work such as migration, optimization, security, configuration, upgrades, and maintenance.

Those are examples, not a promise that every provider includes every activity. Check the service description for the systems covered, tasks included, exclusions, and any conditions attached to the work.

A responsibility matrix shows who performs, approves, or shares each activity. In the AWS Managed Services responsibility matrix, for example, application development and deployment remain customer activities in the described environment, while AWS is responsible for deploying AWS infrastructure. Some incident responses are shared. Those allocations apply to that AWS service environment; a different provider or contract may draw the line elsewhere.
#1 Best Overall
Pay particular attention to resources the customer provisions or changes outside the provider’s managed workflow. In the AWS example, the service can provide incident management, detective controls and guardrails, reporting, designated resources, security and access support, and technical support through service requests for self-service-provisioned resources. But customers may retain continuity, patching, infrastructure monitoring, and change-management responsibilities for resources configured outside its AMS change-management system. Ask how such exceptions are identified and supported.
What might a managed services agreement include?
Use these questions to examine a proposal and its contract rather than assuming the service name defines its coverage:
- Scope: Which systems and lifecycle tasks are covered, and what is excluded?
- Responsibility allocation: Who carries out and approves changes, handles incidents and patches, and owns application versus infrastructure work?
- Operations and support: What monitoring, support channels, escalation routes, and service hours are specified?
- Security and change controls: Which controls and processes does the provider operate, and which remain the customer’s responsibility?
- Customer control: What can the customer provision or change directly, and how are those resources treated under the provider’s operating model?
Service hours and service levels are not interchangeable. AWS states that its Managed Services business hours are 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year; that is a statement about that specific service, not a standard across providers. The reviewed sources establish no universal response-time or service-level thresholds. Compare the actual proposal and contract for coverage, response commitments, and escalation terms.

Moving some operating work to a provider can reduce routine administrative burden and leave an organization’s team more time for other priorities. AWS’s Well-Architected guidance on managed services recommends inventorying a workload and considering which components are suitable; managed databases and analytics services are examples. These are potential operational benefits, not guaranteed savings or outcomes.

How are managed services different from ITSM?
Managed services describes an arrangement in which an outside provider operates a defined service or environment. IT service management (ITSM) is the broader practice of creating, operating, and maintaining end-to-end IT service delivery. AWS’s ITSM overview describes work spanning technology management, from procurement and configuration to responding to service interruptions, and characterizes ITIL as flexible best-practice guidance rather than a rigid set of rules. A managed-services provider may use ITSM practices, but the terms are not synonyms.
