notionctl is the Python package; after installation, its documented command is notion. It lets you inspect and change Notion database schemas and rows from a terminal, with JSON-oriented output and scripting controls. It is a code-driven workflow—not evidence of a declarative system that detects schema drift or plans migrations automatically.
What notionctl does—and what it does not
The project describes itself as a Notion CLI built for coding agents. Its documented commands cover retrieving a database schema, querying database rows, creating databases, and updating a database title or schema. It also documents page-property updates, which can be used to edit row data, plus raw API passthrough for endpoints without a dedicated command. Database IDs can be supplied as UUIDs or Notion URLs.

These commands make database work accessible to scripts and agent workflows, but do not by themselves establish a full database-as-code lifecycle. The documentation cited here does not establish automatic drift detection, migration planning, transactional updates, rollback, or idempotency. Treat dry-run and exit codes as aids to safer operations, not guarantees that an operation can be undone or safely repeated. Install the package and authenticate
PyPI lists notionctl as requiring Python 3.12 or later. Its release history lists version 0.3.1 as released March 18, 2026; package versions and runtime requirements can change, so check the current PyPI listing when installing.

uvx notionctlFor interactive use, the project recommends browser-based OAuth. During authorization, grant access to the pages the CLI needs. For CI or other headless environments, provide a Notion API key through the NOTION_API_KEY environment variable or the per-command --token option. Keep real credentials in a secret manager or protected environment variable; do not put a live token in a script, terminal transcript, or log. The project says credentials persist locally across uvx runs.

Inspect, query, and change a database
The following are the documented command shapes. Replace <id> with the target database’s UUID or Notion URL; consult the package help or README for the exact arguments and filter syntax supported by the installed version.

Page-property updates provide a route for changing a database row’s properties. Use raw API passthrough when the endpoint or operation you need does not have a dedicated command. Because required arguments and property payloads depend on the operation, check the installed CLI’s help and the project documentation rather than guessing a schema.

Use scripting controls carefully
The documented interface includes compact JSON output, NDJSON input for batch operations, a --dry-run option on mutating commands, and distinct exit codes for outcomes such as not-found, permission-denied, and rate-limited errors. These features can help a script parse results, submit batches, preview supported mutations, and distinguish failure classes.
- JSON output: choose it when another program or agent needs structured command results rather than human-readable output.
- NDJSON input: use it for documented batch operations that accept newline-delimited JSON on standard input.
- Dry run: use the option on a mutating command to preview its documented behavior before applying changes. Do not assume every command supports it.
- Exit codes: branch on command success or failure in automation, and report the specific failure category where available.
For consequential changes, inspect the target schema and permissions first, test the command on an appropriate database, and verify the resulting schema or rows afterward. A dry run is not a transaction, and differentiated errors do not imply automatic retries or rollback.

Do not confuse notionctl with Notion’s official CLI
notionctl is the third-party Python package whose executable is notion. Notion separately documents its official terminal CLI as ntn. Notion says the official CLI is optional and intended for developer workflows; its help page lists Mac, Linux, and Windows availability. Some official CLI capabilities, including Worker management, depend on plan eligibility or workspace enablement. Those official-tool details should not be assumed to describe notionctl.
