HyperDrive Next Thunderbolt 5 Dock Review: Is Built-In SSD Storage Worth the Trade-Offs?

The HyperDrive Next Thunderbolt 5 Dock stands out by combining an internal M.2 NVMe SSD enclosure with Intel Thunderbolt Share certification, a useful pairing for a desk shared by two computers. Its compromises are equally concrete: no built-in HDMI or DisplayPort, no card reader, limited charging power for connected accessories, and reviewer-reported slowdowns when SSD and Ethernet are busy at the same time.

What makes the HyperDrive Next Thunderbolt 5 Dock different?

Most docks expand a computer’s ports; this one also houses an M.2 NVMe SSD and supports Thunderbolt Share. That can make it appealing if you want storage permanently attached to your desk and regularly move files or share peripherals between two computers. Windows Central describes using the dock in a two-laptop setup for those tasks (Windows Central, August 22, 2026).

The combination is more compelling than the dock’s port count alone. It is not necessarily the best choice for a desk that needs lots of different connections or straightforward video outputs.

What ports and power does it provide?

Macworld’s August 4, 2026 review describes a 10-port design, in addition to the SSD enclosure. Its reported specifications are:

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Connection Reported specification
Upstream Thunderbolt 5 One port, rated at 80Gbps and up to 140W to the host laptop
Downstream Thunderbolt 5 Three ports, rated at 80Gbps and up to 15W each
USB-A Four ports, rated at 10Gbps; one provides up to 7.5W and three up to 4.5W
Ethernet One 2.5Gb Ethernet port
Audio One front 3.5mm combo jack
Power supply 180W, as reported by Macworld

These are review-reported ratings, not a substitute for checking current manufacturer specifications and your host computer’s requirements. The key practical distinction is between power delivered to the laptop and power available to accessories: the reported 140W host charging is substantial, while 15W Thunderbolt and 4.5W or 7.5W USB-A charging may be limiting for devices that need faster charging.

Does it have HDMI or DisplayPort?

No dedicated HDMI or DisplayPort output is listed in Macworld’s review. A monitor can connect over Thunderbolt/USB-C, or through a suitable HDMI or DisplayPort adapter or cable. The right option depends on the display’s resolution and refresh rate, the host computer, and the cable; do not assume any USB-C adapter will support every combination.

What M.2 SSD fits, and how practical is the 16TB claim?

Macworld reports that the enclosure accepts NVMe M.2 drives in 2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280 lengths, with capacity claimed up to 16TB. That maximum is an upper capacity claim, not a drive included with the dock or a practical default: Macworld noted that 16TB drives were extraordinarily expensive when it reviewed the product in August 2026.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Before choosing a drive, verify that it is NVMe and one of the supported M.2 lengths; M.2 describes a physical format and does not by itself guarantee interface compatibility. The same review says opening the enclosure hatch requires a PH1-type screwdriver and that its review box did not include one.

Can it connect two laptops?

Thunderbolt Share is intended to let two computers communicate for file transfers and peripheral sharing. Windows Central reports that the dock’s certification can help enable this kind of workflow where at least one laptop would otherwise need official certification. The exact experience depends on the computers and setup, so confirm current Intel software, host, cable, and certification requirements before relying on it. This feature is most valuable if you routinely switch between computers or need to move work between them; it is less useful if the dock will serve only one machine.

How does performance hold up under simultaneous use?

Windows Central reported drops in SSD and Ethernet speeds when it used both paths at once. TechRadar also discussed performance limits for the M.2 storage and 2.5Gb Ethernet under load (TechRadar, June 30, 2026). These are reviewers’ observations, not proof that every unit or workload will experience the same slowdown. They do, however, matter if your routine involves transferring large files to or from the dock’s SSD while using wired networking heavily.

Who should buy it?

A good fit if

  • You have a Thunderbolt 5 computer and want a single dock with both desktop storage and expansion.
  • You expect to use Thunderbolt Share to move files or share peripherals between two computers.
  • Your monitor can connect over Thunderbolt/USB-C, or you are comfortable choosing an adapter for your exact display setup.
  • The dock’s reported downstream charging limits are adequate for your accessories.

Look elsewhere if

  • You need built-in HDMI or DisplayPort, an SD card reader, or a broader variety of ports.
  • You expect the dock to fast-charge multiple accessories from its downstream ports.
  • Your work frequently saturates the SSD and Ethernet connections at the same time.
  • You mainly want a conventional dock and have no use for internal M.2 storage or a two-computer workflow.

Macworld contrasts this dock’s 10-port design with higher-port-count alternatives, while TechRadar and Windows Central discuss other docks in the category. Specifications vary among similarly named models, so compare the exact model’s ports, video outputs, charging, storage, and regional availability rather than relying on a family name.

Verdict

The HyperDrive Next Thunderbolt 5 Dock makes a specific case: combine internal NVMe storage and Thunderbolt Share in one desk accessory. That can simplify a two-computer workflow, but it does not make the dock a universal expansion hub. Its lack of native video outputs and card reader, modest accessory charging, and reported simultaneous SSD/Ethernet slowdowns are meaningful trade-offs. Choose it for the integrated storage and multi-computer features; choose a more conventional port-rich dock if breadth of connectivity is the priority.
