Marketer Jack Ryan went to a job interview and found himself speaking to an AI-generated video avatar instead of a human interviewer. The exchange, reported in September 2024, drew attention to a practical question for applicants: what does an automated interviewer actually assess—and how much of the process is a person’s decision?
What happened in the interview?
Ryan’s experience was reported by 404 Media on September 27, 2024. The interviewer appeared on a video call as a red-haired woman avatar and asked Ryan questions about his work experience. At one point, the avatar said, “I find it helps when candidates tell me a story in answering the questions.”

Ryan’s smirk and critical reaction helped make the exchange memorable, but the story was more than an unusual video call: the avatar was part of an interview for a real job application. Ryan described the experience to 404 Media as “a perfect demonstration of late stage capitalism.”

In a follow-up published October 1, 2024, Futurism identified Ryan as a marketer and self-described disabled athlete. He questioned whether AI could read emotion and facial reactions well enough to produce a well-rounded interview, saying, “I can’t imagine AI, [large language models], and other tools are able to interpret the human emotion and facial reactions to provide an actual, well-rounded interview.”

Ryan also raised concerns about disability disclosure and remote work, and about the value of human interaction in hiring. Those are his objections to the experience, not proof that the system used in his interview misread him or discriminated against him. The reporting describes one applicant’s experience; it does not establish how frequently AI-avatar interviews occur or their effects on candidate outcomes or accessibility.
What did Fairgo say the AI did?
Futurism reported that Fairgo CEO Julian Bright said in 2024 that the AI was intended to reduce human bias, did not select candidates, and did not use interview audio or video to evaluate them. Those statements describe the position attributed to the CEO at that time. The available reporting does not establish the precise product configuration or data handling for Ryan’s interview.

Fairgo’s current website describes an employer-facing platform for live AI video interviews, candidate screening, transcripts, scorecards, and shortlists. It says employers can invite candidates to interview on their own schedule, then review summaries and decide whom to advance; it also says the AI evaluates skills, culture fit, and potential. That is current vendor marketing, and it should not be treated as a definitive description of the system Ryan encountered in 2024.

How strong are Fairgo’s performance figures?
Fairgo’s website currently displays figures for faster hiring, fewer interviews, candidate satisfaction, and candidates screened. The page does not state a publication year or provide a study, sample size, or methodology for these claims.

For candidates, the key distinction is whether AI is simply hosting or organizing an interview, or whether it also scores answers and influences who advances. Before taking part, applicants can seek clear answers from the employer about the process:
- Does the AI only ask questions, or does it score candidates or help create a shortlist?
- What criteria and candidate data are used to produce any assessment?
- Will a human review the results, and can that person change or override them?
- What notice and accommodations are available, including for candidates with disabilities?
- How are audio, video, transcripts, and other interview data handled?
The reports about Ryan’s interview do not answer these questions for every employer or for Fairgo’s current product. Applicants need to check the specific employer’s process and the company’s current documentation rather than assume every AI interview works the same way.
