For most Windows 10 and 11 users, Microsoft Defender Antivirus already provides built-in, real-time protection. Malwarebytes Free is better understood as an on-demand scanner and cleanup tool; ongoing Malwarebytes protection requires a paid plan. The right choice depends on whether you want Windows’ built-in coverage, an extra scan when you suspect a problem, or paid features beyond that baseline—not on a proven detection winner.
What are you comparing?
“Windows Defender” is often used informally, but the built-in antivirus component is called Microsoft Defender Antivirus and is managed through the Windows Security app. Microsoft also uses “Microsoft Defender” for a separate app included with Microsoft 365 Personal and Family. That subscription app has broader device coverage; it is not the same product as the built-in Windows antivirus. Microsoft documents Windows Security for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Which option fits your situation?
Choose the built-in baseline if you want everyday Windows protection
Microsoft Defender Antivirus is already part of Windows Security and includes real-time protection and multiple scan modes. If you have no specific reason to add another product, start by checking that Windows Security reports protection as active and that security intelligence is up to date. Microsoft’s documentation describes its controls and scan options, but does not establish a head-to-head detection advantage over Malwarebytes.
#1 Best Overall
- PROTECTS YOUR DEVICES ON MULTIPLE PLATFORMS: Compatible with Windows, Mac, Android devices.
- UNMATCHED THREAT DETECTION: We found malware on 29 percent of devices that already had a third-party antivirus installed. That’s the power of our innovative technology. We block sophisticated cyberthreats that other programs miss, providing an effective way to secure your devices and data.
- INCREDIBLY EASY TO USE: Our simple user interface enables you to fully control your protection to meet your needs without requiring technical expertise. You can schedule scans, adjust protection layers, and choose your desired scan mode. Protecting your devices shouldn’t be complicated.
- ADVANCED MALWARE, RANSOMWARE PROTECTION: Helps protect you from websites that download ransomware, steal login credentials, or run scams. Reduces your exposure to hackers and cyberthreats while protecting your devices and data.
- PROACTIVE EXPLOIT, AND VIRUS PROTECTION: Protection from the financial and reputational risk posed by a ransomware attack. Shields your device and data from vulnerable and unpatched software until it can be updated. Malwarebytes finds more threats compared to traditional antivirus programs so you can restore your device quickly to its pre-infection state.
Use Malwarebytes Free for an on-demand second opinion
If you want to scan and clean a Windows PC without subscribing to continuous Malwarebytes protection, the free product serves that narrower role. Do not treat it as a replacement for an active real-time antivirus: Malwarebytes identifies ongoing protection as a paid feature. Malwarebytes’ free-versus-paid explanation.
Consider a paid Malwarebytes plan for its additional features
A paid plan may make sense if you specifically want Malwarebytes’ real-time or other included protection features, or need a plan covering devices beyond Windows. Confirm the exact plan, platform support, and included layers before buying; feature availability and pricing vary. Malwarebytes’ product descriptions are vendor claims, not independent comparative test results. Current plan details.

Malwarebytes says it is designed to work alongside other antivirus products, but that does not mean two complete real-time antivirus stacks will remain active. Microsoft says Defender Antivirus automatically turns off when a compatible third-party antivirus product is installed and active; after that product is uninstalled, Defender should turn back on. Check the provider status in Windows Security rather than assuming both are operating as full-time antivirus engines. Microsoft Support.

Malwarebytes also warns that overlapping web-protection components can conflict. Its troubleshooting guidance says competing use of Windows Filtering Platform functionality can lead to lost internet access, app problems, or a blue-screen error; it recommends allowing Malwarebytes in another antivirus and, if needed, disabling one overlapping web-protection layer. This is a possible compatibility problem, not a claim that every setup will fail. Malwarebytes Help Center guidance.
Is either one proven to detect more threats?
No detection winner is established here. The available official product pages describe features, but they do not provide a matched, independent head-to-head test under the same versions, dates, and settings. Avoid treating vendor marketing claims or a longer list of protection layers as proof that one product detects more malware, runs faster, or performs better in real-world use.
