First record the model number on the tool, the battery model, the charger model, and your country or region. Then use the manual for that exact combination: Makita’s CXT, LXT, and XGT batteries and chargers are separate systems, and compatibility is platform-specific.
Once you have those details, read the charger indicator before buying anything. Check the AC supply, temperature, ventilation, and battery seating, then decide whether the evidence points to the battery, charger, or tool. The DC18RC light codes below apply only to that Rapid Optimum Charger; other Makita chargers can use different indicators.

Identify the tool, battery, and charger before troubleshooting
Look for the model label on each component and write it down. A typical record includes a tool code such as a drill or trimmer model, a battery code such as BL1820B, and a charger code such as DC18RC, DC18RA, or DC18SF. Also note the country where the equipment was purchased, because manuals, service routes, and available models vary by region.

Why “compact” is not a compatibility specification
Makita describes 18V LXT and 18V Compact products as designed for the 18V LXT platform. Makita also lists CXT, LXT, and XGT as distinct battery systems. A battery that physically fits a tool is not automatically approved for it, so do not infer compatibility from voltage printed on the label or from the battery’s compact size. The exact tool manual and the battery receiver markings are the authority.

What to record
- Tool model number and rated voltage.
- Battery model number, voltage, and visible platform markings.
- Charger model number and the exact light pattern.
- What happened: no start, intermittent start, rapid loss of power, or no charging.
- Whether the battery or charger was unusually hot, cold, wet, damaged, or recently stored.
Keep this information available if you need Makita support. It prevents a service representative from guessing which platform or revision you have.
A safe five-minute triage
- Remove and reseat the battery. Take it out, check that the latch engages normally, and install it again without forcing it. If the tool has more than one battery position, use the arrangement specified in its manual.
- Try the charger with the correct battery only. Do not use an adapter or a battery from another Makita platform. Confirm that the charger is connected to the AC supply shown on its nameplate.
- Observe the indicator from the moment the battery is inserted. Record whether the light is solid, flashing, or alternating and which colors appear. The timing and pattern matter.
- Check temperature and airflow. Move the charger and battery to a dry, ventilated room within the limits in the applicable manual. Remove dust or objects that block the charger vents, but do not open the charger.
- Stop if there is damage or an abnormal smell. A cracked case, melted plastic, exposed wiring, liquid ingress, smoke, or burning odor is a reason to unplug the equipment and arrange qualified service rather than continue testing.
This sequence separates a simple operating condition from a component fault without requiring a consumer to dismantle a tool or charger.
What the DC18RC charger lights mean
Makita’s U.S. documentation gives the following definitions for the DC18RC Rapid Optimum Charger. Use these meanings only for a DC18RC and check the manual supplied with any other charger model.

Does alternating red and green prove the battery is bad?
No. In its U.S. FAQ, Makita says, “Most likely the problem will be the battery in this scenario.” That wording points toward the battery but does not promise that the charger cannot be involved. If the pattern persists with a known-compatible battery, or if the charger shows other abnormal behavior, Makita directs owners to its service organization or call center for a model-specific diagnosis.
Check AC power, temperature, and charger ventilation
Use the charger’s specified supply
Read the electrical information on the charger nameplate and use a suitable AC outlet. If the outlet is controlled by a switch, protected by a tripped breaker, or shared with equipment that has caused an interruption, charging may not begin. Test the outlet with another safe appliance if necessary, but do not modify the charger plug or cord.
Stay within the cited temperature limits
The DC18RC/DC18RA manual says charging may not start when battery temperature is below 0°C (32°F). It also instructs users not to charge when room temperature is below 10°C (50°F) or above 40°C (104°F). These figures belong to that manual and model family; verify the limits in the manual for your charger. Let a cold battery warm naturally and let a hot battery cool naturally before trying again.

Keep vents clear and the area safe
Makita’s manual states, “Do not allow anything to cover or clog the charger vents.” Place the charger on a hard, stable surface with clearance around the vents. Keep charging away from flammable liquids and gases. Unplug by gripping the plug rather than pulling the cord. If the charger has been dropped, damaged, or exposed to liquid, do not use or disassemble it; the manual directs repair to qualified service.
Battery behavior: low charge, deep discharge, and a new pack
When the tool slows down
Makita’s U.S. support wording is direct: “Once you notice the performance of the tool diminishing (i.e. it starts to slow down and is not useful), stop using the tool and charge the battery.” Continuing to discharge below the level at which the tool can operate can damage the battery and reduce both runtime and cycle life. A tool that stopped after a long job may therefore need a normal recharge rather than a replacement part.
A new battery does not need a special break-in routine
Makita recommends simply charging a brand-new battery to a full charge before using it. Do not deliberately run a new pack flat to “condition” it. The DC18RC communicates with a compatible battery and enters maintenance mode after the battery is full, so leaving a correctly charged pack on that charger is governed by the charger’s design and manual.

When a battery remains unusable
If the battery repeatedly produces a defective-battery indication, will not accept a charge under normal temperature conditions, or causes the same symptom in more than one compatible tool, stop relying on it. Record the model and indicator pattern and ask Makita or an authorized service center whether the pack should be tested or replaced. Do not pry open a lithium-ion battery case.

These checks are not a substitute for an electrical test. They are intended to prevent an incompatible battery or a temperature delay from being mistaken for a failed charger.

Replacement decisions: battery, charger, or service
BL1820B as a conditional example
The BL1820B is an 18V LXT Compact 2.0Ah battery. Makita’s product information says it is compatible with 18V lithium-ion tools that have Star Protection, identified by a Star Symbol and/or a yellow battery receiver. That makes it a possible replacement only when the exact tool documentation confirms LXT and the required protection system. It is not a universal battery for every Makita compact tool.
DC18RC as a conditional charger choice
The DC18RC is intended for supported 18V LXT batteries. Buying one before confirming the battery platform, charger model, and fault symptoms can leave the original problem unresolved. Treat it as a replacement candidate only after the manual and service diagnosis isolate the charger.
DC18SF four-port charging
Makita’s DC18SF is an 18V LXT four-port charger. Its product description says the indicator lights show charge progress and status and that the charger monitors each battery’s current, voltage, and temperature. Those features describe the DC18SF; they do not establish compatibility with every Makita compact tool or make it the best replacement for a particular setup.

Use four decision questions before ordering
- Does the replacement belong to the exact CXT, LXT, or XGT platform required by the tool?
- Does the tool manual list the battery model or charging system?
- Does the observed indicator pattern implicate the battery, charger, temperature, or simply a low state of charge?
- Would official testing be safer and less expensive than replacing a component that has not been isolated?
Find the exact manual and escalate correctly
Makita’s U.S. FAQ instructs owners to search the model number on Makita’s website for product details and then use its Resources & Media section to download instruction manuals and parts breakdowns. Use the parts breakdown to identify the correct component number, not to infer that every similarly shaped battery fits.
If the document is unavailable or the fault remains after the external checks, contact Makita’s U.S. National Call Center or use its service-center locator. Those routes are U.S.-specific. Customers elsewhere should use the Makita support organization for their country, because manuals, model names, warranty terms, and service availability can differ.
Stop troubleshooting and seek service when
- The charger, battery, or tool is cracked, swollen, wet, scorched, or emitting an unusual odor.
- A cord, plug, or housing is damaged.
- The same fault returns after the correct battery, charger, temperature, and power conditions are confirmed.
- A DC18RC alternates red and green repeatedly and the battery cannot be charged normally.
- You are considering opening the charger, battery, or tool to test internal parts.
Makita’s manuals direct damaged equipment to qualified repair. For lithium-ion packs and mains-powered chargers, professional service is safer than improvised probing or dismantling.
