If you want your Pixel’s screen to light up only when a notification arrives—or want a more customizable always-on display (AOD)—Google’s built-in options may not give you the control you’re looking for. Pixel phones already have AOD and At a Glance; third-party apps add different features, from notification interaction to rules for when the display turns on. Which one fits depends on whether you want a new display, automated control of the existing one, or simply a faster on/off switch.
What Pixel already does—and what it doesn’t promise
Google’s Pixel support documentation says At a Glance can show information and updates on the lock screen, home screen, and AOD. What appears depends on the relevant permissions and settings. That is a built-in glanceable-information feature, not a promise of a fully customizable AOD or a setting that makes the display appear only when a notification arrives. The distinction matters: a custom AOD app can change what the display looks like and how notifications are presented, while an automation utility can change when the phone’s own AOD is enabled. A quick-settings toggle only makes switching the system feature easier. Those are separate approaches, not interchangeable versions of one missing feature.

Choose the kind of control you want
A richer display: Peek AOD
The Google Play listing for Peek AOD – Always On Display describes custom clock designs, tappable notification icons and notification interaction, a notification light, and a charging indicator. It also lists conditions for showing the display: while charging, when there are new notifications, or continuously after the screen locks. The listing was updated September 6, 2026.

This is the closest fit if you want to change both the appearance and notification behavior of the display. Those capabilities and its compatibility are claims in the app listing, not independent test results. Check the listing and your phone’s behavior before relying on a particular mode.
Peek AOD’s developer-provided Google Play Data safety section says no data is collected and no data is shared with third parties. That is a developer disclosure, not an independent privacy audit, and disclosures can change.

Automate the system AOD: Pixel Auto AOD
Pixel Auto AOD describes automation for Pixel phones, including turning AOD on while charging or when selected apps send notifications, then turning it off when the phone is idle. Its project description also mentions charging metrics. This is an automation approach rather than a replacement display with custom clock and notification designs.
The project describes using the elevated WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS permission. Review its setup instructions and current project status before installing; repository availability and maintenance can change.
Add a quick switch: Always On Display Toggle
Always On Display Toggle on F-Droid adds a quick-settings tile for switching the system AOD on or off. It does not redesign the display or add notification-triggered behavior by itself.
The package page says the app requires WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS, granted through Shizuku or ADB, and has been tested only on Google Pixel devices. The developer warns that manufacturers implement AOD differently, so do not assume it will work on another brand or Android version.

A broader AOD app: AMOLED Edge
The Google Play listing for Always On Display: AMOLED Edge describes a persistent clock, edge lighting, schedules, pocket detection, burn-in protection, and support for multiple devices. The listing was updated October 1, 2026. These are developer-described features; verify that the options you need are available for your phone.

The same listing claims that “Most users see under 3% overnight drain on AMOLED screens.” This is the developer’s claim, not an independently measured result or a general estimate for AOD apps. Its Data safety section says the app may collect and share location, financial information, and other data types, and that data is encrypted in transit. Treat those as developer-provided disclosures and review the current listing before installing.

Check permissions, privacy, and compatibility before setup
Some AOD utilities need more access than a typical clock app. In particular, WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS is an elevated permission: understand how the app asks you to grant it and follow the relevant project or package instructions. Do not grant it simply because an app requests it; first decide whether its function justifies the setup.
For apps installed through Google Play, check the listing’s Data safety section alongside the permissions Android shows. Google’s guidance explains how to review and manage app permissions: Manage permissions from the Android settings app. A developer’s disclosure is useful context, but it is not a third-party audit.
Confirm the exact phone model and Android version rather than relying on a general “Android compatible” label. AOD behavior is implemented differently across manufacturers, and the F-Droid toggle specifically says its testing was limited to Pixel. Also check whether the app is still maintained and whether its current listing matches the feature and privacy details described here.
Keep battery claims in perspective
An always-on screen can affect battery life, but the amount depends on the phone, display technology, settings, and how the app behaves. The available developer claim for AMOLED Edge—under 3% overnight drain for most users on AMOLED screens—does not establish what another user or app will consume. No independent battery measurement is available here, so compare your own battery use after setup rather than treating a listing figure as a guarantee.
Where lock-screen widgets fit
Lock-screen widgets are related but do not replace AOD or notification-triggered display behavior. In an Android Developers Blog FAQ, Google said widgets were available on Pixel Tablet lock screens and described AOSP availability for tablets and mobile as scheduled for the release after Android 16 (QPR1), expected in late summer 2025.
