To recognize one person by sound, give that contact a distinctive ringtone. To let selected people interrupt while other calls are quiet, configure the People list in a Focus such as Do Not Disturb. These are separate controls: a custom ringtone does not silence other callers or create a contacts-only rule.
Choose the right setting for what you want

Apple describes the ringtone feature as a way to “assign distinctive ringtones to certain people, and turn the ringer on or off.” Apple’s iPhone ringtone guide documents the contact-specific sound setting; its Focus guide covers who can interrupt.

Assign a ringtone to one contact
- Open Contacts and select the person.
- Tap Edit, then tap Ringtone.
- Choose a tone. Save the contact changes if prompted.
This changes the sound associated with that person’s calls. It does not make other callers silent, and it cannot guarantee that the phone will make sound if Silent mode or Focus settings suppress interruptions.

Let selected people through a Focus
- Open Settings and tap Focus.
- Choose the Focus you use, such as Do Not Disturb, Personal, Sleep or Work.
- Tap People. Choose Allow Notifications From, then add the contacts you want to reach you.
- Review the options for calls from groups of people and repeated calls, and set them according to your needs.
Apple also documents the option to silence selected people rather than allow a list. The available controls and wording can vary by software version. Repeated calls are defined in Apple’s guide as two or more calls from the same person within three minutes; this is a Focus setting threshold, not a general exception to every call-silencing rule.

Use Emergency Bypass for a specific emergency contact
Emergency Bypass is a per-contact exception intended for emergency contacts, not a replacement for setting up a Focus allow list. In Contacts, select the person and tap Edit. Tap Ringtone or Text Tone, turn on Emergency Bypass, then save if prompted. Apple says this can allow sounds and vibrations from that contact even when the iPhone or notifications are silenced.
Make a custom ringtone if the built-in choices are not enough
Apple documents using GarageBand on iPhone to create a ringtone from an audio file, a song in the Apple Music library, or a song you made. Once the audio is ready, export it as a ringtone; during the export flow, choose Assign to contact to attach it to a person. GarageBand can shorten an exported ringtone automatically if it is longer than 30 seconds. Not every track is necessarily available for export, so a song in your library is not a guarantee that it can be used. See Apple’s instructions for creating a custom ringtone.

If a call still does not ring
Check the relevant controls in turn; no single setting resolves every missed call, and carrier or network conditions may also matter.
- Silent mode: Confirm it is off. Depending on your iPhone model, use the Ring/Silent switch, Control Center or the Action Button’s configuration. Apple’s ringtone guide explains the ringer controls.
- Focus: Check whether a Focus is active, then review its People settings and any schedule that may turn it on. See Apple’s Focus instructions.
- Unknown callers: If the caller is not saved, review Phone settings for unknown-caller handling. Apple’s UK guidance lists options including Never, Ask Reason for Calling and Silence, as well as a separate call-filtering feature; availability and labels may vary. - Blocked contacts: If one particular person never gets through, check the blocked-contacts list. Apple includes this among its checks for calls that do not ring.
- Calls sent straight to voicemail: If the basic settings look right, Apple also recommends reviewing service-related call settings such as Wi-Fi Calling where available. Your carrier affects availability. See Apple’s troubleshooting steps.

Menu paths can differ on older software; the unknown-caller and voicemail-troubleshooting pages are localized for the UK and Singapore, respectively, so regional labels or availability may differ.
