There is no defensible universal winner between Make and Zapier for freelancers. The better fit depends on what your automation actually does: how often it runs, which steps count toward usage, how quickly it must run, and whether clients or collaborators need account access. Compare one real workflow in both services before choosing a plan.
Which is better for freelancers, Make or Zapier?
Choose based on the workflow and the way you need to operate it—not on a headline plan price or a vendor’s comparison chart. A simple, infrequent process may fit an entry-level allowance; a workflow with frequent runs, branching, batch processing, or AI steps can consume usage differently. Collaboration and scheduling can also rule out a plan that otherwise looks sufficient.

Make and Zapier count usage differently, so their monthly allowances are not directly comparable. Make calls its units credits and generally charges one credit for each module action. Zapier calls its units tasks, which generally count successful action steps; some built-in steps are currently free. Map the same workflow in both products before estimating cost.

How to compare the same workflow in both services
- Describe one process. Write down its trigger, actions, branches, data transformations, and any error handling. Use a workflow you expect to keep, such as transferring a new client inquiry into a tracking system and sending a confirmation.
- Estimate monthly runs. Count how many times the process is expected to start in a typical month. Include busy periods if your work is seasonal, and note whether runs happen on a schedule or in response to an event.
- Count what executes successfully. For Zapier, estimate successful action steps and separate them from triggers and built-in steps that currently use zero tasks. For Make, count module actions and identify any features, especially advanced AI, that may consume more than one credit.
- Check the required run interval. Decide how soon an automation must run after its trigger or scheduled time. A plan allowance is not enough if its minimum schedule interval is too slow for the work.
- Check who needs access. Decide whether only you will build and maintain the automation or whether a client or teammate must share the account or workflows.
- Build or inspect the workflow in each interface. Compare how clearly you can follow branches, map data, handle errors, and find useful debugging information. Do not assume a product is easier to maintain based on marketing language alone.
Zapier’s plan-selection guidance, updated August 21, 2026, puts it plainly: “Usage is the main consideration when selecting your plan.” Its article recommends estimating processes and run frequency. Zapier’s plan-selection guide is a useful checklist, but your own workflow determines the actual estimate.

How Make and Zapier count usage
| Question | Make | Zapier |
|---|---|---|
| What is the usage unit? | Credits. Module actions usually consume one credit each; some advanced AI features may consume more. Make pricing | Tasks. A standard successfully completed action step generally uses one task; some actions use more. Zapier task documentation |
| Do triggers count? | Count module actions in the scenario and check the specific feature’s credit treatment; the cited plan page does not establish a single rule for every trigger configuration. Make pricing | Zapier describes tasks as successfully completed units of work. Do not count a trigger as a successful action task in a basic estimate; verify unusual trigger or app behavior in the current documentation. Zapier task documentation |
| Are built-in utility steps free? | Not established as a general zero-credit category by the cited pricing page; count module actions and verify the relevant module’s treatment. Make pricing | Current built-in tools including Filter, Formatter, Paths, Delay, Looping, Sub-Zaps, Digests, Zapier Manager, Storage, Tables, and Forms use zero tasks. Zapier task documentation |
| Can AI change the estimate? | Yes. Some advanced AI features can consume multiple credits per action. Make pricing | Yes. AI steps can use one, three, or five tasks depending on model tier and tool calls. Zapier task documentation |
These are working rules for estimating, not a promise that every app or configuration behaves identically. Check the current usage documentation for the precise modules and actions in your workflow.
Why branches and batches make simple estimates fail
A linear example with a fixed number of steps is only a starting point. A branch may execute different actions depending on the record; a batch may process many records in a single run; retries or AI tool calls can alter usage. Estimate the paths your real data takes, including common and high-volume cases, instead of multiplying runs by the number of steps in an idealized diagram.

What the current plan pages say
The figures below are vendor-published information from pages accessed October 7, 2026. They are dynamic, may differ by geography or billing terms, and should be rechecked before subscribing. The displayed monthly prices should not be treated as a like-for-like cost comparison without confirming billing cadence and included usage on the pages themselves.

Do not substitute Make’s separate vendor comparison page for its live pricing page: the comparison page lists different prices for Make plans and Zapier plans. The discrepancy means those comparison-page amounts should not be presented as current prices without resolving it. Its descriptions of Make as visual and Zapier as linear are also vendor-authored positioning, not an independent usability study. Make’s comparison page

If you alone own, build, and maintain the automations, an individual plan may be adequate. Zapier’s plan-selection help says Free and Pro are individual plans for one user and directs multi-user customers to Team or Enterprise. For Make, the live plan page lists team roles and shared scenario templates as Teams features. If a client must collaborate inside the automation account rather than simply receive its outputs, include those collaboration requirements in the plan comparison. Make pricing
Do not treat a client’s need to receive an email, report, or completed deliverable as the same thing as needing account access. Decide explicitly who will own credentials, approve changes, troubleshoot failures, and retain access when a freelance engagement ends.
How to make a decision without a misleading price comparison
- Start with usage fit. Compare your estimated monthly credits or tasks with the allowance, including branches, batches, and AI-related multipliers.
- Apply the schedule requirement. If the workflow needs runs more frequently than a plan allows, that plan is not a fit even when its allowance is ample.
- Apply the access requirement. Check whether the plan supports the number of people who must build, manage, or share the automation.
- Compare maintainability in the actual workflow. Inspect the same branching, mapping, error handling, and debugging needs in both services. Available evidence does not establish an independent usability winner.
- Then compare verified prices. Confirm the current plan price, billing cadence, geography, usage allowance, and overage behavior on the official pages. Do not divide a list price by its nominal allowance and call the result a universal per-workflow cost: real usage depends on which steps run and how the workflow is built.
Zapier’s May 29, 2026 plan update says paid accounts can opt into pay-per-task billing at 1.25 times the plan’s task cost. The update describes this as an opt-in, not automatic overage billing, and cautions that terms may change. Check the current account settings and plan documentation before relying on it. A practical rule for choosing
Choose the service and plan that can run your representative workflow at the required frequency, within a realistically estimated usage allowance, with the access and maintenance model your client work needs. If both fit, compare the workflow itself in each interface and choose the one you can confidently maintain. The available vendor documentation supplies plan and usage rules, but it does not establish that one service is broadly better for freelancers.
