Make vs. Zapier for Automated Webpage Screenshots from Google Sheets

Make offers API flexibility and screenshot-service modules; Zapier documents a direct Sheets-to-GetScreenshot action. Here’s how to choose and configure each workflow.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Either Make or Zapier can turn a Google Sheets row into a webpage screenshot. Zapier offers a direct Google Sheets-to-GetScreenshot action; Make can use screenshot-service modules or send an HTTP request to an API. Choose based on whether you prefer a direct app connection or more control over API calls and data mapping. The documentation does not establish that either platform is universally faster, more reliable, or cheaper.

How the two workflows differ

Both start with a spreadsheet row containing a page URL, pass that URL to a screenshot service, then send the resulting output to another step. The main distinction is how you connect the capture service and handle its inputs and outputs.

Decision point Make Zapier
Google Sheets trigger Make lists Watch New Rows and Watch Changes for its Sheets + HTTP workflow. Zapier lists New Spreadsheet Row and New or Updated Spreadsheet Row triggers.
Screenshot step Lists URL screenshot actions through HTML/CSS to Image and GetScreenshot; an HTTP module can call an API. Lists GetScreenshot’s Take Website Screenshot action and screenshot actions from Screenshot API.
API flexibility HTTP supports API requests and authentication; the target API determines the required parameters. API by Zapier or Webhooks by Zapier can call services without dedicated integrations, with different authentication setup.
What to check before building Connect your Google account and supply the target screenshot service’s credentials if required. Confirm which output fields the connected module returns. Check Sheets permissions, the screenshot action’s current plan requirements, and the output fields available to subsequent steps.

Make says: “With the HTTP app in Make, you can connect to API services and applications that don’t have an integration with Make.” See Make’s HTTP documentation. That flexibility means you must follow the screenshot API’s own request and authentication documentation; it does not make every service’s parameters interchangeable.

Choose Make when API control matters

Make is a good fit if you want a visual scenario that can call an API directly, or if the screenshot service you need has a Make module. Its Google Sheets + HTTP listing includes Watch New Rows and Make a request. The Google Sheets + HTML/CSS to Image listing includes Create a Screenshot of a URL.

  1. Prepare the sheet. Put stable column headers in the first row, including a column such as url. Add one page URL per row and avoid incomplete rows that could trigger a request without a usable URL.
  2. Create a scenario. Add a Google Sheets Watch New Rows module and connect the Google account and spreadsheet. Select the sheet and confirm the module identifies the URL column.
  3. Add the capture step. Choose a listed screenshot module, if it supports the capture options you need, or add an HTTP request to your chosen screenshot API. Map the row’s URL field into the module’s URL input or the API’s documented URL parameter. Supply authentication as that service requires.
  4. Inspect a real module result. Run a controlled test row and inspect the returned fields. Depending on the service, the result may be image data, a file, or a URL; do not assume it is a public image link.
  5. Send the result onward. Add a destination step, such as storage or an email action, and map the actual returned image or file field. If the goal is a link written back into Sheets, first confirm that the service returns a usable link and that the destination can access it.

Make’s GetScreenshot documentation lists a Take Screenshot action, but the page cautions that its content is AI-generated and may contain errors. Verify the live module’s fields and behavior in your Make account before relying on it.

Choose Zapier for a direct Sheets-to-screenshot pairing

Zapier documents a Google Sheets-to-GetScreenshot connection with an action called Take Website Screenshot. The listing requires a website URL and describes capture options including full page and width. See the Google Sheets + GetScreenshot integration.

  1. Prepare the sheet. Put clear column headers in the first row and include a URL column. Keep the sheet structure stable while the Zap is connected.
  2. Set up the trigger. Choose Google Sheets and New Spreadsheet Row, or New or Updated Spreadsheet Row if edits should also trigger captures. Connect the account and select the spreadsheet and worksheet.
  3. Map the URL. Add GetScreenshot’s Take Website Screenshot action and map the row’s URL value to its website URL input. Choose the capture settings the action currently exposes, such as full-page capture or width.
  4. Test the action and route its result. Inspect the returned image or file fields, then add an action for the actual destination. The integration listing says a capture can be passed to a following action or emailed; confirm the field and format available to your Zap before designing a destination around it.

Zapier’s listing says the New Spreadsheet Row (Team Drive) trigger is polled every 15 minutes on its Free plan; this is a plan-specific behavior stated on the page updated October 1, 2026, not a general interval for all triggers or plans. The same listing says a Starter plan is required for Zaps with three or more steps for the listed screenshot action. Check the current listing and your account before building around either constraint.

Make the sheet and capture requirements explicit

Keep the spreadsheet predictable

Zapier says the first row must contain column headers and warns that sorting, deleting rows or columns, or renaming or rearranging sheet structure can disrupt connected workflows. Its guidance recommends turning off related workflows before structural edits, then testing, remapping if needed, and publishing again. Treat these as Zapier-specific workflow rules, not universal Google Sheets or Make limits. Zapier also says Sheets triggers are limited to 30 MB and actions can handle files up to 50 MB.

Verify access and screenshot options

Capture options vary by service. Check the selected action or API for full-page capture, dimensions, wait behavior, output type, and any other requirement before mapping later steps. If a page is private, use only a service and credentials authorized to access it. The cited product pages do not establish that a particular service can access a particular protected site, and screenshot tools should not be treated as a way to defeat authentication or access restrictions.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first when you want a screenshot API rather than a browser workflow: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. It also has an MCP server for AI agents, and includes 1,000 screenshots a month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

In Make, add an HTTP request to your scenario and map the row’s URL into this call. ScreenshotNeo documents the API at ScreenshotNeo API docs.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

For a webpage URL from a sheet row, replace https://stripe.com with the mapped URL and provide your API key. A direct GET can also be made with Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Or with Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Cost, reliability, and troubleshooting

Compare actual costs, not assumptions

The available product documentation does not establish an apples-to-apples cost comparison, current task or operation budgets, or a universal cost per successful screenshot. Check the current Make and Zapier plan requirements, the chosen screenshot service’s pricing, and how each workflow counts trigger checks, actions, retries, and failed captures before estimating monthly spend.

Diagnose common failures

  • No trigger for a new row: Confirm the connected account, selected spreadsheet and worksheet, and whether the trigger watches new rows or changes. In Zapier, check its stated trigger polling behavior for your plan.
  • The URL arrives empty or malformed: Check that the first row contains stable headers, the row has a value in the URL column, and the correct field is mapped into the screenshot action or request.
  • The screenshot step rejects the request: Verify the API endpoint, authentication, required parameters, and input format against that service’s documentation. For Make HTTP requests, the module’s general API capability does not define the target service’s requirements.
  • The next step cannot use the capture: Inspect the screenshot step’s actual output. Map its file or image field, or confirm a returned URL is accessible to the destination; do not assume all services return a public URL.
  • A page is blank, incomplete, or blocked: Check the service’s wait and capture settings and whether the site permits the authorized request. The sources do not establish identical behavior across services or guarantee access to dynamic, authenticated, or restricted pages.
  • A Zap breaks after sheet edits: Follow Zapier’s guidance: turn off related workflows before changing structure, then retest, remap fields if needed, and publish again.

Neither platform’s cited documentation provides a controlled comparison of screenshot latency or reliability. For an important workflow, validate representative URLs and failure handling in your own account, including what happens when a capture fails and whether retries could create duplicate downstream actions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can either workflow save the screenshot link back into Google Sheets?

Only if the selected screenshot action returns a link the Sheets action can store; inspect the actual output fields before configuring that destination.

Does a screenshot action guarantee access to a password-protected page?

No. Access depends on the site’s rules and the screenshot service’s authorized access capabilities; the cited product pages do not guarantee it for any particular site.
