These are related but different measurements. Set a known window size, read back the actual viewport and window.devicePixelRatio, then compare those values with the saved image before changing page styles.
Why a Selenium screenshot can look wrongly scaled
Selenium captures the current browsing context, but the screenshot’s appearance depends on more than the requested browser-window dimensions. The outer window, CSS viewport, browser page zoom, and device scale factor are distinct. A mismatch in any of them can make the page appear larger, smaller, or less detailed than expected.
- Window size: the browser’s outer dimensions, which include browser chrome in headed mode.
- CSS viewport: the area the page lays out into, measured in CSS pixels.
- Page zoom: the browser’s zoom state, which can affect layout and the reported device pixel ratio.
- Device pixel ratio (DPR): the ratio between physical pixels and CSS pixels. It is useful evidence, not a standalone zoom control.
Selenium notes that screen resolution can affect how an application renders, and provides window-moving and resizing mechanisms to control it (Selenium window management). The Chrome DevTools Protocol separately exposes CSS viewport metrics and device-metrics overrides (Chrome DevTools Protocol: Emulation).
Measure the window, viewport, and pixel density
Start with measurements rather than changing CSS. Set a deterministic outer size, query the size Selenium reports, and inspect the page after navigation in the intended window context.

Python diagnostic example
# Set a deterministic outer browser window size, then inspect CSS viewport values.
driver.set_window_size(1280, 900)
metrics = driver.execute_script("""
return {
innerWidth: window.innerWidth,
innerHeight: window.innerHeight,
clientWidth: document.documentElement.clientWidth,
clientHeight: document.documentElement.clientHeight,
devicePixelRatio: window.devicePixelRatio
}
""")
print(driver.get_window_size(), metrics)
driver.save_screenshot("page.png")
This uses Selenium’s window, JavaScript execution, and screenshot APIs (window management; JavaScript execution; screenshots and browsing contexts). The requested 1280 × 900 is an outer-window request, not a guarantee that the CSS viewport will be exactly 1280 × 900.
window.innerWidth and window.innerHeight describe the layout viewport; document.documentElement.clientWidth and clientHeight provide another view of the document’s available content area. window.devicePixelRatio reports the ratio of physical pixels to CSS pixels. Browser page zoom can change DPR, while pinch zoom does not (MDN: Window.devicePixelRatio).

Other Selenium bindings
Use the equivalent window-size setter and getter, script-execution method, and screenshot method in your binding. Selenium’s language-specific examples are linked from its window-management documentation. Keep the same browser, driver, operating system, and headless/headed mode when comparing results; record those details with the measurements.
Fix the cause indicated by the measurements
If the CSS viewport is the wrong size
Correct the browser-window setup first. Read back the actual size after setting it, then inspect the CSS viewport after navigation. In headed mode, browser chrome means the outer dimensions and content viewport are not interchangeable. In headless mode, also check the browser and driver configuration used by the test environment. Do not assume that setting a window size alone proves the page received the expected CSS viewport.

If the viewport matches but the screenshot’s raster dimensions or density differ
Inspect DPR and any device-scale-factor override or display scaling in the capture environment. Chrome DevTools Protocol’s device metrics distinguish the CSS viewport from device-pixel behavior; its protocol definitions can evolve, so verify command details against the browser version in use (CDP Emulation). There is no universal output-pixel conversion formula established across browsers and screenshot modes.
If browser page zoom is the likely cause
Standardize the browser profile/session and host display settings, then recheck the measurements. The available Selenium documentation does not establish a universal cross-browser WebDriver command for resetting a user’s browser zoom. Avoid using document CSS zoom as a substitute: it changes page layout rather than restoring the browser’s own zoom state.

If the test uses Internet Explorer Driver
Apply the 100% zoom requirement only to this legacy driver. Selenium’s IE-specific documentation says the driver expects browser zoom at 100%; the ignoreZoomSetting capability skips that check but does not establish that screenshots or coordinates will then be correct (Selenium Internet Explorer Driver). Selenium states standalone Internet Explorer is no longer officially supported as of June 2022, so do not generalize this requirement to Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
Capture after the page is ready
- Set the intended outer window size and read it back.
- Navigate to the page and wait for the site-specific condition your test needs, such as a target element becoming visible or the application finishing a known transition.
- Run the viewport and DPR measurements in the selected browsing context.
- Save the screenshot and inspect both its image dimensions and the recorded measurements.
There is no one wait condition that suits every site. Choose a readiness condition based on the content being captured; a screenshot taken during responsive reflow, lazy loading, or a transition may not represent the settled layout.

Compare capture environments consistently
When the same test produces different-looking images on two machines or CI workers, record these details for each run:
- Browser and driver names and versions.
- Headless or headed mode, operating system, and display scaling.
- Requested outer window size and measured CSS viewport.
window.devicePixelRatioand any explicit device-scale-factor emulation.- Browser page-zoom state, where known.
- Whether the capture is a viewport screenshot or a full-page screenshot.
Changing several of these at once makes diagnosis harder. Compare one environment variable at a time and keep the recorded page metrics beside the image.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a clean capture without configuring Selenium and a browser session, ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot or PDF with one GET request. Cookie banners are accepted and removed along with 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Frequently Asked Questions
Does a higher devicePixelRatio mean the browser is zoomed in?
Not necessarily. DPR relates physical pixels to CSS pixels and can also reflect display scaling or device-metrics configuration; compare it with the viewport and capture environment.
Should I use CSS zoom to make the screenshot look right?
No. CSS zoom changes page layout and is not a reset for browser-level zoom.
